Believe me, I wanted Willie gone two years ago.

I'd hire Mex as hitting coach in a heartbeat, but I get nervous about all these guys who think that just because they played for the team, they can manage it. That said, managing a baseball team is an easier job than coaching a basketball or football team. I do think Mex would be unafraid to give these guys the kick in the *** they so desperately need. And maybe that's enough.

I'd still call up Bobby V and drive a dump truck full of money up to his house, but as Greg noted before, he's probably not interested. Nor, it sounds like, is Davey Johnson, who never should have been fired in the first place.

Has a manager ever been fired the day after getting a vote of confidence? More listless play last night.

You gotta love the Mets fan....lets Reyes hear it after an error and then chants his name after his second homer.

    The Vultures are circling!

Gary Carter said Tuesday that he's not campaigning for the manager's job with the New York Mets and that he "hope the Mets can turn this thing around and they can go on and win the World Series."

Carter was interviewed on ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning show.

"I want to clear this up especially," Carter said Tuesday. "I never wanted to try to undermine or do anything to bring this to a situation where I'm trying to campaign for something.

"I would love to get back to the big leagues as a coach, possibly a manager. I would love that opportunity. [But] I wish Willie well."

The interview came days after Carter was quoted as saying: "I just want them to know of my availability. I'm only a phone call away because my contract allows me to leave the ballclub. I could be in New York tomorrow, if necessary, because if there's anything at the major league level I can leave this job."

Carter is currently managing the Orange County Flyers of the independent Golden League in California. During the original interview on "The Mike & Murray Show" on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, he said he called Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz to ask if it would be a good idea to phone owner Fred Wilpon about a possible job opening.

We should bring in Wally Backman.

Gotta suspend beer sales at the stadium...but hey, it could mean that we turn this around.

Mike and the Mad Dog brought up a good point on the ride home from work today: This team got off to a blazing start in 07 and it wasnt until after they got about 18-20 games over 500 that they started to play lazy which has carried over in to this year obviously. theyre 6 games under 500 since then. What other conclusion is there then to say this group collectively has lost their fire?

When is Jose Reyes going to stop pressuring himself into mistake after mistake?
When is David Wright going to be having fun again and go back to being top step David?
Among other things those differences are also painfully obvious.

On a different note: Matt Wise to the DL (mercilessly)...Carlos Muniz recalled. Muniz has some upside and has pitched well in limited duty here.

Heilman may get a quick demotion at some point a la Steve Trachsel a few years back. Ron Darling among others believes that Heilman is getting hit more due to the dip in velocity and throwing sidearm instead of the 3/4 delivery he had a few years back. Personally, I dont think that alone fixes the guy as I think part of his problem is mental but hey anything to make watching the bum more bearable!

Gave up 34 of them last year most in the AL. One thing I noticed is that Johan is always around the plate. Hitters get comfortable against him because hes so accurate and almost never throws any chin music. He needs a little Ollie Perez or Pedro Martinez to him. :wink2:

I hope you held the door for him and made sure he didn't trip on the carpet. That guy's so fragile that he should be encased in bubble wrap everywhere he goes.

Good call. Pedro was ALWAYS ready to throw some high, inside heat just to make the batter uncomfortable. And with Ollie, he's such a nutcase that he might decide to earhole every seventh batter because it's Tuesday and there's a full moon. I half expect to see him and Brian Schneider play out the "hit the ****ing mascot" scene from Bull Durham one of these days.

Also remember Santana is not a great first half pitcher, but in the second half he is flat out awesome.
So this seems to go along with his history.

    Good win...

We are gonna be playing a pretty big game for this early in the season. Ollie vs. Olsen.

You guys got a glimpse as to why Larry Beinfest is such a great GM. The marlins have a great bullpen and Beinfest built it with scouting and picking up other team's rejects.

Sometimes I feel as if Minaya does his scouting by reading his Baseball America subscription.

Beinfest found Gregg, Lindstrom off the scrap heap..and Pinto through information from his south american scouts. All are top relievers.

Do we even have any scouts?

Man we havent had scouts since Minaya was promoted from the position years ago. Our scouting has always been among the worst in baseball. Its so bad that when Wayne Krivsky was fired two weeks ago as Cincy's GM I was wondering how long it would take the mets to realize that he drafted Jay Bruce, Homer Bailey and Joey Votto, made a brilliant signing of Josh Hamilton, before not so brilliantly trading him but at least getting a seemingly talented arm in Edison Volquez. Id be pretty if we hired him as head of scouting or something like that....:wink2:

By the way, besides Pelfrey, look what these two are doing for the AAA Twins

    Humber 2-5 5.19 ERA 50 innings 29 k's 27 walks
    Mulvey 2-6 4.10 ERA 48.1 innings 41 k's 22 walks

Just maybe all these young Mets pitchers were very over valued by the Mets and just are not that good.

You gotta look at where they are sent oo and what pitches they are being asked to throw. AAA is a "testing" ground. AA ball is much more competetive.

Humber WILL be a stud. Stuff is stuff. Humber has it. Not so sure about Mulvey.

Agreed. Mulvey is the player I hated to give up. He has 4 pitches and will probably bloom in another 6-8 months. hes still only 22 I believe.

Humber on the other hand still hasnt regained the velocity he had pre-Tommy John surgery and has had to become an entirely different pitcher. His ERA is misleading because I think hes still in the Pacific Coast League which is a notorious hitters league that plays a lot of their games in high altitude cites like Colorado Springs.

Also there has been some talk lately that Eddie Kunz may be brought up at some point this season. he just has a few control issues he needs to hammer out. Once he does I think we will have our closer for the post Wagner era. Not only does he bring 95mph heat but he mixes in a nice slider. Last i read he was working on a change up which i think he'll have a better chance to perfect being around Pedro and Johan everyday, owners of what may be the best 2 change ups in baseball.

per www.hotfootblog.com, Phil garner has suggested we bat Beltran number two. He did manage beltran for a short amount of time but beltran flourished under him in Houston. If Church and Moises ever come back I think i would support this idea since Castillo is quite possibly the most useless slug in all of baseball.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this at all this year, considering how much it was discussed to death when he struggled in 2005.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Church
    Alou
    Delgado
    Schnieder
    Castillo
    Pitcher

    I could live with that

Finally our first comeback win all year. After being 0-20 in games in which we trailed after 6 we get a beautiful game from the pen. Heilman, Schoenturd, and Wagner gave them a perfect 7th, 8th, 9th, 10, and dirty sanchez gave us a perfect 11th as well before serving up a solo hr to amezaga in the 12th. But alas, Fernando Tatis made us all realize why he was allowed to marry Omar's daughter with his 2 run walk off double in the twelfth

The scary part is that the pen had retired 19 in a row at one point. We struck out 15 batters as a staff in 12 innings. Yet we nearly lost because of the 5 hits we allowed, 4 were homers.

An unlikely night indeed. A pinch hit homer by Chavez to tie it in the 9th and a 2 run double by Tatis to win it. Anyone know the odds that Luis Castillo and Endy Chavez would homer on the same night? And Alfredo Amezaga has to be thrown in that mix as well....

Sounds awesome to me. Boston is a great city to be in for a few days, although I'd have to say I'd rather be in Chicago if all else is equal. Too bad she couldn't have seen a Sox game at Fenway.

On the goodside Castillo got injured and the Stache is rehabbing in AA. I smell an 06 like revival. Now if only Delgado would wake the heck up.

And then they come back and win as carlos beltran finally gets a meaningful homer with a runner in scoring position to tie and tatis wins it! Watching the replay now...Pelfrey did an excellent job battling and keeping us in it. He retired the last 12 he faced and the bullpen retired the only 6 they faced. 2nd come back win in a week. The tide may be turning....:hi5:
