This is true. What I meant by gameplan was that the dink and dunk was more on the coaches than Stephen Morris just being captain checkdown. It was good playcalling by the coaches, and good execution by Morris. I loved the hurry up as well.
I don't have an issue with Mike James getting carries. Duke is flat out awesome, but a little Mike James sprinkled in is necessary. Duke will be getting more carries, though. You can't forget that this was his first collegiate game. As the offense creates an identity, you'll see more of Duke.
Oh yeah James needs his touches for sure. I just think when a guy is absolutely torching a defense like that you feed him the ball.
It looked more like a flaw in the scheme rather than the players though. Which is good because you can correct that a lot easier. It looked like they simply didn't assign anyone to the flats. Also like I said before the depth of the zones...very poor. Corners were too deep and the linebackers were too far in. It made it so no-one could step up and tackle in the flats.
Not to mention the vast amount of freshman and sophomores playing. This is only the beginning. We have 34 freshman/sophomores in our 2 deep. I think Golden said 14 true freshman played today. Mistakes are going to be made. Lots of them. This is what happens when your last coach was abysmal at his job and your forced to play young guys because all the juniors and seniors recruited by the last coach play like freshman.
On the plus side of playing so many freshmen though, recruits should be taking notice. They have a very real chance to play early too.
I really was surprised how much zone coverage we used. It seems like it would be easier to start off with man-to-man with a young team and work those zone schemes in slowly.
Malcolm Lewis jumped Kendal Thompkins on the depth chart. And I guess Seantrel will be playing on Saturday?
Not surprising considering how bad Thompkins was, and sucking that bad as a 5th year senior... Henderson will play, but I don't think he's taking over Ereck Flowers starting spot anytime soon. Maybe Bunche's spot since he was the worst on the OL against BC imo.
Good god @ Golden. I think he cares more about bringing the program back than anyone else. He got me fired up by just watching this video alone.
Any expectations for our next game? Should be pretty telling as far as what to expect the rest of the season IMO.
UTough has made the team a lot stronger. That's going to be the difference between this year and last. Kansas State was one of several teams that just pushed us around all game. I don't see that happening this year. It will be close. Kansas State's defense is bad so this should be a high scoring match. But in the end, our improved strength and run defense I think gives us the victory. I agree this game will be telling. If we win, we'll have beaten 2 teams that beat us last year. 2 teams that are in the top 10 in the FBS in returning starters. BC with 19, K State with 18. Meanwhile, we played 14 true freshman against BC, and 34 of our 44 players in our 2 deep are freshman or sophomores.
I wonder if a win could creep us into the top 25? That would be nice for such an incredibly young team.
Hope Golden has some names in mind to replace D'Onofrio. Because this defense is absolutely terrible.
I highly doubt he is going anywhere, anytime soon. That's one heck of a young group out there. He'll get a chance to develop them and he better work hardest on a pass rush.
Miami's gameplan: Make Klein look so good they get carried away and start allowing Klein to do no look behind the back passes resulting in 20 yard losses in missed field goals. Brilliant....
Well that was pretty bad. Good news is we get the ball first and our defense got a breather that final drive along with halftime. Let's just hope we play better and cut into this.
My issue is that a lot of the problems look schematic. In short yardage Klein needs to be keyed on. Make him beat you with his arm, we are making it too easy.
We really need to open up through the air. I really don't understand our play calling its pretty predictable and stale. Also we saw Duke break open across the middle of the field on that one drop....poor execution but it worked well from a design standpoint. Yet we won't go back to it?
D'Onofrio better change it up some. I know we still need the talent and we are a young team. D'Onofrio has ties with Al Golden.
Our defense is pretty sketchy but they are young and playing a team that doesn't really play "Football" offensively. I mean obviously they play legitimate football but it's not....I dont know. I just really want someone to nail Klein HARD.
Pressure isnt the issue here I mean they have barely thrown it. It's just containment, solid tackling and driving the ball carrier backwards...
Duke Johnson could be a serious threat in the passing game if he holds onto the ball. He is giving their secondary/linebackers fits downfield.
All you hope to see at this point is the young team not quit and at least make it not a blowout. D'Onofrio **** the bed. You force Klein to beat you with the pass, and we didn't do that whatsoever.
Only chance this team has this season is by feeding Duke the rock. Mike James has been a great team player, but he's just not any good whatsoever.
