I suspect the percentage of players who never broke out is considerably higher than the percentage that have. Like in the neighborhood of 95% to 5%. I also suspect that the 5% who broke out didn't have problems coming to practice drunk, being out of shape but "acting" like they aren't, and taking piss breaks during camp. Good luck Indy.
Exactly plus my understanding was the council would have a chance to intervene before a player gets cut for behavior issues not to keep a player from being traded.
It looks to me like our DBs coach, who never coached in the NFL before, and our DC who has never coordinated in the NFL before, both decided they could not do anything with this mentally immature train wreck Vontae Davis. He must be the first player in league history who'd not reached the apex of his mental maturity by age 24.
So the first young talented player that required a little extra effort in this regard, they throw in the towel on him?
First of all, he was demoted before he was traded. They didn't just get rid of him right off the bat. Second of all, I don't think any of us is privy to the effort that was likely made by various coaches this year to work with Vontae Davis and help him elevate his game behind the scenes. I certainly don't think we should assume that no effort was made. These guys are professionals who get paid millions to play this game professionally. A demotion should do the trick. Wake up pal, play the game. Nobody is working with me on my maturity at my less-than-six-figures-per-year job. If I have a problem, they're going to discipline me and expect the message to get through. If it doesn't, that's on me, and I can't blame them for moving on with a new employee.
Round 2, pick 37 overall. That was a stupid trade that Denver made too. Dan Gronkowski isn't with them anymore either.
The defense will be able to get off the field fine. Just for the wrong reasons. When teams can pass at will against your secondary there will be a lot of 5 play, 80 yard drives.
What a joke. What a god damned joke. The fact we traded him today, and the fact that he's an idiot, with all the talent in the world, but too stupid and lazy to make it work. So, instead of trying to coach the kid up the hard way like Singletary did with his equally selfish dimwitted brother, Ireland trades him. Unreal. Nevermind having depth at CB... If Smith sucks as he usually does on gameday, or gets hurt, and if Marshall gets hurt... we're screwed. Hell, if our opponent comes out with 3 WR's were screwed, because after Marshall and Smith, its who... nolan carrol? Awesome... In a league thats all about passing, and defending the pass, you can never have too many talented CB's... yet here we, the Miami Dolphins are trading one away. Unreal. Only in Jeff Ireland's Miami Dolphins.
BenVolinPBP profile BenVolinPBP Decision to trade Vontae Davis certainly wasn't a financial one. When did they ever have patience for Paul? He didn't take more than one full season under the administration before he actually reached his potential.
I get the attitude issues , I really do , but not just CB's , also WR's ... and not really adding a viable replacement for the on field production.
Yeah I know that, I'm talking about literally, what they meant when they had that meeting with Philbin, basically, " if you all have a problem with a player, let us see if we cn fix him" first, what I want to know is did a meeting like this happen with Philbin and the counsel before they let VD go..That's how I interpreted that meeting.
This is my problem..did we give up on him too quick..I don't know enough of Philbin to trust him completely, did he push him out the door.? I look at it like, damn, he's 24, it his fourth year man, it's a lot of time to find the switch.. Logic tells me this was the whole staff agreeing on it before they went to Ireland, they know how talented he is, either they don't know what the fu&$ their doing, or they do, we're not gonna find out for a while.
I'd respectfully disagree. Marshall is more consistent AND more versatile; he plays on the outside, nickel corner, and safety. Plus he was honored by his team as Zona's defensive MVP, which is saying a lot when you had Calais Campbell with a big year and guys like Docket, Adrian Wilson, and Daryl Washington. *Not only is Marshall statistically a better run defender than Davis but his 15th ranked WPA (Win Probability Added) was significantly higher than Vontae's 51st according to AdvancedNFLStats. WPA is roughly the most telling stat of a corner's performance & success. *Marshall's EPA rank (Expected Points Added) was also higher than Vontae's: 26th vs 42nd *Marshall's Success Count (number of plays involved in that are deemed a success) was also significantly better, 34 vs 25. WPA rankings 1. Kendrick Lewis (Pitt) 2. Revis 3. Carlos Rogers 4. Nate Clements 5. Ladarius Webb 6. Brandon Browner 7. Corey Webster 8. Charles Tillman 9. Andre Goodman 10. William Gat (Pitt) 11. Charles Woodson 12. Joe Haden 13. Patrick Peterson 14. Jabari Greer 15. Richard Marshall 16. Tramon Williams 17. Brandon Flowers 18. Tarrell Brown (great year in San Fran) 19. Tim Jennings 20. Jason McCourty 21. Jonathan Joseph http://wp.advancednflstats.com/defenderstats.php?pos=CB
Look at it this way: Joe Philbin is a first-year head coach who is developing a rookie QB, which essentially makes him the commander of a rebuilding effort, where young players with talent are gold. Why on earth would he push a 24-year-old cornerback with loads of talent out the door? He strikes me as neither that stupid nor that impulsive. You've seen him on Hard Knocks. What do you think?
That depends on the individual player. VD was the 3rd corner for us because we had two other corners who are starting caliber. How many teams have a nickel corner who immediately prior, was a starter for 3 straight seasons? As for the 2nd being a high one, I didn't realize the draft order for 2013 was set yet.
Gotta love this new Dolphins "transparency." Here's GM Jeff Ireland on the reasoning behind the Vontae trade: "Every decision is made with only the best intentions of the organization. At the end of the day we feel like we’re able to make a fair deal for us and the Colts," Ireland told our Omar Kelly. You know the Dolphins realize how unpopular this trade is when GM Jeff Ireland goes public in trying to defend it: "My job is to try to establish a strong foundation of success and to continue to build on that foundation," Ireland told our Omar Kelly. ... With a fourth straight losing season a strong likelihood, patience is wearing thin, but Steve Ross' vote is the only one that matters.
Anybody who was demoted from being a starter in his fourth season in the league, after starting the previous three, I wouldn't trade a 2nd and a 6th for.
Last year VD was our #1 corner, though that hardly matters now. Remember when Marshall was signed, many here thought the plan was to make him the FS? The idea being to get your 4 best DBs into the starting lineup and having a FS with coverage ability equal to about half the CBs in the league.
You ( meaning any person ) can find ratings , I posted one earlier where Marshall was rated below Vonte and SS was below them ... so what does that mean? Also like Philbin is fond of saying , it is a gut thing , from what you see , from years of playing , coaching , watching . Read the post BPK started about Indy's reaction to getting Vonte for a second round pick. Talent wise , age wise that is a bargain imo , he needs to grow up and be professional , totally agree. This was a Miami pick that they perhaps didn't manage well enough , yes I know it is up to the player too , but they selected him , part of that is a fail on their end , imo. One step forward , one step sideways , two steps back . Is it any wonder we are where we are , and falling fast? Now another question mark and one less answer.
BenVolinPBP Ireland called the DB group -- S Smith, R Marshall, N Carroll, R Jones, C Clemons, J Wilson -- a "position of strength" bit.ly/PeC4Av 2 minutes ago · reply · retweet · favorite BenVolinPBP profile BenVolinPBP From the Post: Jeff Ireland liked the haul he received and is comfortable with DB depth after Vontae Davis trade bit.ly/PeC4Av 3 minutes ago · reply · retweet · favorite MikeBerardino profile MikeBerardino RT @metcalfer: @MikeBerardino IMO. We should try & trade for Fitzgerald. He's not really happy plus no QB.>>Make it happen Arizona in a benevolent mood perhaps? Now that would get things going wouldn't it. Of course has to say he is happy with the DB's and the depth .... they are HIS guys ... we'll see if they are an upper tier DB group this season or if Ireland has once again not delivered.
I wouldn't necessarily call it throwing in the towel. I'd call it a transfer of value, transferring Vontae's value to a position of greater need now that SS seems to be stepping up and we added a solid starter to pair with him. Question, Marve: would you rather have Vontae & SS starting... or Marshall & SS, along with an extra 2nd & 6th rounder? Personally, I'll take Marshall + the draft picks considering Marshall is the more versatile, consistent, and reliable corner at this point.
If Ireland got Fitzgerald (without giving up a million 1st round picks) I will take back everything I've said about him.
Well as always a lot depends on the jrs. I am no expert , there are others here who are much more knowledgeable about that at this stage of the season , but yes ... playmakers are expected to be pretty strong.
so which WR are out there..... Mike Wallace Dwayne Bowe Terrelll Owens (cut and "for free") anyone else ?
Dave Hyde chimes in. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...-davis-trade-0827-20120826-1,0,6678122.column Says this move was all Philbin.. Of course it is.
Respectfully, Marve, I don't think it matters if he was a starter the previous 3 seasons. What matters is he's our #3 now, and we have what look like a pair of solid starting corners. IMO getting a 2nd & 6th for your #3 corner is a coup.
You make less than 6 figures annually? Shows what I know about the head shrinker profession. I thought you guys were all in the 200-500k range. So, I guess I can say I learned one thing today. I am impressed though. You have to be dedicated to your craft, what with the years and money spent on the required education, then to work for an income not really commensurate with the monetary outlay to get there. Sigmund would be proud. And I have new found admiration for your dedication.
You gotta give Philbin his time to create his vision..this is part of the process, I'd like to think I know if Philbin is the right man, but I don't.. I'm kinda in a weird place right now..lol Find a happy place..find a happy place. I do like this staff and they way they coach players.
Next year doesn't have any Megatrons or Fitz types at WR. Not even any Green or Julio Jones types, as far as I know at this point.
I'd rather have Vontae and Sean at corner, Marshall at FS and Clemons at SS. Jimmy at nickel and Carroll at dime.
Got it, you meant they traded their 2010 1st for the 2009 2nd used on Smith. That makes it all the more stupid they gave up on him so soon. But that was during the McDaniels run of trading players and draft picks faster than a horny sailor on shore leave goes through bar girls.
