We lost rookie Jalen Parmale in '08 that way IIRC.

My guess is that HBO plans to have an underdog story every year (I've never watched before this season, so that's a complete guess) and that they picked Brown b/c of the unconventional story. But then as they reviewed all their footage, they couldn't ignore another underdog (Hogan) getting so many positive comments so they decided to feature him.

Yeah, it's a scary proposition if the guy can truly play and has potential. It's starting to remind me a bit of a few years back when the Jets had a small school guy named Danny Woodhead. All the guy did that pre-season was show he could play, and the coaching staff loved him. They found a way to keep him on the roster, but finally cut him loose a few weeks into the season, at which point the Patriots jumped on him. If there's one move to this day that that Ryan and Tannebaum kick themselves over, it's that one.

At this point you know teams will be scouting with perhaps a bit more attention on the kid. If he shows well someone might be inclined to provide a roster spot for him.

It happens on a few guys, but in general they're ruthless. The players aren't present so there's nobody's feelings to protect. They generally slam them first and usually only. Coaches seem to pick one or two players (at most) to defend from their group. That generally translates to 15 or 20 guys getting many positive comments. Although a player getting as many as 10 in the first two weeks would be generally reserved for a Marino type player. And most of the comments Hogan got were not from HBO sitting anybody down and asking for specifics on Hogan. They were captured footage. Even the comments from Wilson that weren't from the show were not specific to Hogan. He was asked who gave him the most trouble. It is very rare for any one player to get this many positive comments from so many different sources. I would guess that RT, Martin, Miller and Vernon are the only other rookies that you could splice so many positive comments together on and many of those would be solicited comments b/c they were high picks and/or local products.

They typically feature more than a few bubble players, with the hopes of still having 2 left before the final roster cut. Perfect television world, 1 makes it, 1 doesn't.

Any idea why he is so low on the depth chart, in that case? I mean the coaches sit there and say he's caught more balls then anyone...

and then the team agonizes over not having anyone to contribute better as a starting receiver.

Does this seem like rocket science? He must be TERRIBLE on special teams.

SOmetimes I think the Hard Knocks guys are better at spotting talent than coaching staffs are. Maybe because they have less things to worry about other than singling out players who stand out.

I'm going to go Devil's advocate and say the reason Hogan has stayed where he is on the depth chart is BECAUSE he is so consistent and reliable. In evaluating 3 QBs simultaneously you don't want the 3rd WR platoon to be worthless. Turner calling Hogan the secret weapon may hint at this.
I hope to see something in the preseason from Hogan that backs up the 7/11 character Hard Knocks is building. What is clear is that with Hartline sidelined and Johnson cut. I wouldn't be surprised to see any WRs cut OR starting alongside Bess and Naanee.

I found it interesting that the quarterbacks discussed how open Hogan was in the preseason game. However, it was the fourth quarter.

Just starting to think about it... how funny would it be if all of these quotes about Hogan were just being slightly edited like this...

Reggie: "Man, 81 is always open. (cut) If only he could catch..."

Moore to Garrard: "Hogan is always open. (cut) Just throw it at his facemask and try to wedge it in there."

Tannehill: "I'm gunna call him 7-11... (cut) b/c thats where he'll be working next week."

STs maybe, but I also think that the depth chart is almost meaningless at this point. Sometimes it's up to the unit coach. Maybe Turner doesn't care. The depth chart seems to have very little correlation with who he sends in and in what order.

Anyone else get the feeling though that Jim Turner is essentially a Head Coach in waiting? He was most definitely the strongest personality prowling the sidelines during the Bucs game, and the most authoritative outside of Philbin. Sherman and Coyle are up in the booth.

I definitely saw a future head coach in Jim Turner. He's a hard *** but he seems to be good with the players regardless. Very charismatic in my opinion.

Playing for who, Boston College? The Redsox?

Anyone who cant make the roster at WR on THIS team might as well start looking for a new line of work.

I just really want to see Chris Hogan on the field with Ryan Tannehill or Matt Moore instead of Pat Devlin. That may be the only way we're able to see what he's really capable of.

Slot receivers are kind of a dime a dozen. Slot receivers that can create big plays...are valuable. He's 6'2" and 220+ lbs, runs anywhere from a 4.4x to a 4.5x, is able to consistently get open from the slot and can bench press a Buick. I'd like to see if he can create some big plays from the slot, given the opportunity with a quarterback that can read what he's doing on the field and adjust to it.

I love how everyone is so excited about how good Chris Hogan is. He's half the WR Roberto Wallace, Julius Pruitt & Marlon Moore is right now

Didn't someone predict Omar would turn on this kid Hogan? Because it looks like he just did suggesting he's not half the WR of the bottom of our barrel receivers.

Everyone is criticizing the media for their inability to accurately scout players from the sidelines during practice, and citing Chris Hogan as evidence. Omar is convinced he can scout players from the sidelines as well or better than anyone, so I'm not surprised he's trying to downplay Hogan. From his perspective, if Hogan were actually doing anything worth talking about, he'd have already told us about him.

It's tough to scout players from the sidelines. I'm not surprised that a reporter could miss a player performing well. I am annoyed by Omar's defensiveness about it now though (based on the tweets posted here). It seems like he believes he can scout from the sidelines and now will focus on Hogan with his agenda filled reports to try and prove it.

All eyes will be on Hogan on Friday night.

I guess we'll have to wait and see whether Jimmy Wilson and the Hard Knocks producers are right and the beat reporters are wrong.

I still say the issue at hand is not about sideline scouting. It's about failure to investigate and report what the team is thinking/saying.

These are linked issues. Certain beat writers fail to investigate and report what the team is thinking because they believe they're seeing the same things the team is. Ergo, no need to do the extra legwork, just fire off a few tweets from the nearest Starbucks.

    Sadly, that's probably true.

The one I might be most disappointed in is Barry Jackson, and I know that's unfair...but it's exactly the kind of thing he tends to catch with his style of investigative reporting.
