I'm not going to proclaim whether this coach is the right one, or not, I have no idea..I know he has fast practices thus far and he came from a good program..we'll see.

Im not saying it doesnt matter who's in charge, I said it hasn't mattered who's been in charge. This team has been bad for a decade and it didnt matter who was in charge. The team still looks the same

I would base it on Jeff Ireland (was it Jeff? Maybe someone else) saying we have a bunch of 4's 5's and 6's, and we need 3's 2's and 1's which we don't have, and not sure yet if anyone we have on the team can step up.

    That's pretty damning man.

Haven't seen that mentioned yet in the thread and to be honest I was quite shocked.

He just called our complete WR corps 4's, 5's and 6's on national TV. Not one of them a starter.

so far everything i see, hear, and read about philbin tells me he is the right one. i specially like how he has 2 groups ready to go and he just turns around at the end of one group ending their play then sees the next group start their play as soon as he turns around. gotta love hard knocks for that alone. and i really like how he spends more time with special teams then most teams do.

yeah that was Ireland on hard knocks and i've seen it mentioned in some other thread. now i wonder if he was upset about philbin getting rid of chad. was that mentioned before or after chad got canned? but Philbin made the right call. I guess we should all know what position are next 1st round pick will be.

but, IIRC, Ireland also said there was talent there and one of those 4's, 5's, and 6's needed to step up..... just as one of his 4's, 5's, and 6's in Dallas stepped up--- Miles Austin....... and just like one of the Giant's 4's, 5's, and 6's did with Cruz who didn't catch a single pass in 2010.

I don't think he was talking about the complete corp. I think he sees Bess and Hartline as a 2 or 3 and the rest of the group as 4s, 5s and 6s with enough talent that hopefully some can/will make the jump to 1s, 2s and 3s.

Yes but he said they have to step up ...

which means Bess etc. so far, nobody has. Bess, our best WR, at most a 4? I know it's hyperbole and the cameras were rolling etc., but still. That tells me Ireland is not happy with our current set of WRs. Wallace has talent and you see what they've said about him.

While Wanny and Cam Cam were great people but crappy coaches. We've tried every variant except great coach great person.

Agreed but you can't develop wide receivers with inconsistent and poor QB play, which we have had for years.

I'm not disagreeing with you (although I believe Bess is a solid #3), but only time will tell. At least we do have the talent there for one of those guys to emerge.
If we had a bunch of 4's, 5's, and 6's AND they were a talentless bunch, then I'd share your sentiments. However, like Ireland pointed out----- they're 4's, 5's, and 6's with the arrow pointing upward, and that wasn't just GM fluff talk b/c it's obvious there's talent among them, a lot of talent. Hopefully trying to develop that talent doesn't bit us in the butt.

That is a HUGE proclamation for a GM to make about his own team.

    I don't know if we have any 1s 2s or 3s.

    Wow.

Dallas had Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton, etc. while Miles Austin was developing.

The Giants used a 1st rounder on Nicks, a 3rd on Manningham, all while letting Cruz develop.

It wasn't some genius foresight that those teams had. Both of those guys were nice pleasant surprises. But neither team relied on them as rookies or 2nd year guys.

And knowing that he actually realizes that yet did nothing in the draft or free agency to address it is another example of how the people running this team need to go.

We had Brandon Marshall while guys like Wallace, Moore, Gates, and Pruitt were developing.

Well... we could have passed on Tannehill.

Or stuck with Columbo at RT.

Or taken a so-so WR prospect in the 3rd instead of a TE mismatch in the passing game.

There is more than one way to improve a team, and this team had more than one need.
Ireland drafted the best talent available, most of whom should be able to contribute to success and do so in better fashion than reaching for the best receiver on the board at any of our selections. So you disagree with Ireland drafting a 1st round QB, ensuring he's protected by adding a 2nd round RT, then drafting a DE 3rd (which is more significant than a WR), followed by 2 offensive weapons who might end up seeing more snaps and action down the road than any 3rd or 4th round receiver, and feel these picks do nothing to address present or future needs or improve the team? I very much disagree.

One receiver wasn't going to turn our previous 53 man roster into a SB contender.
I think Brandon Marshall proved that point.
And I think the 2010 6-10 Houston Texans with Andre Johnson, Arian Foster, Matt Schaub, and Owen Daniels proved my point even better.

It's about building up the entire 53 man team. Over a few years, that approach begins to pays off, where as a few years of drafting for need leaves you with a roster full of average players, and a roster full of average players isn't a Super Bowl contender.

I definitely wouldnt have passed on Tannehill, but we could have went after one in the second round like Ryan Broyles and gotten a Rt later.

So you'd be OK with putting your 1st round QB's health in a late round RT's hands? A QB's protection is NOT an afterthought. It comes before WR... or any position for that matter.

Sam Bradford has been in the process of being ruined the past 2 years b/c StLouis can't protect him. Would you still want a great receiver over a RT if the QB is either on IR or throwing for a 74 QBR?
Detroit's ignorance regarding Stafford's protection left him on the verge of being done if he happened to suffer another bad hit. How do win games if the star QB is on the sidelines?

BTW, a slot receiver like Broyles will not see more snaps and have as much of an impact as a right tackle.

Plus slot receiver is not where we need help the most. It's boundary on deep routes.

And none of those guys have showed any flashes of being Miles Austin or Victor Cruz while Marshall was here.

We all hope one of these young guys can emerge to be a good NFL WR. Maybe even two of them. But the odds are heavily against that. And relying on that to happen is a mistake

    Fair points.....

I personally don't think it's as much about "relying" on them as it is about circumstance. I don't think we signed Marshall with the expectations of having to trade him b/c he didn't fit.... and I don't think we intentionally ignored receiver in the first 4 rounds. That's just how the board fell. Circumstance.

Chad Johnson was cut because he did not get "IT". You know he was warned up front about not being a clown. He knew he was on a short rope. He knew he would be on Hard Knocks and his every move scrutinized. He knew his production had fallen off a cliff and would have to start out well and cause no ripples. He knew he was on his last chance to be a No1 reciever. He knew that he had to change peoples perception of him as being "selfish" and a "distraction. He knew all of these things...then goes out and does that dopey interview and gets involved with the altercation with his soon to be ex wife of 4 whole weeks. All within the 1st two weeks of camp. Yea...he was given a raw deal.

Fat guys try harder in bed ;p

As far as the conniption fit some 'new' folk are having....Chad is a 34 year old has been who had 3 strikes with this team in a short period of time (don't know the 3 strikes? Pay attn next time as Hard Knocks listed all 3 from Philbins mouth) and was most likely maybe a 500 yard receiver who drops the ball a lot. Guy was a progress blocker.

For all the talk about the WR's I will point out yet again.......311 receiving yards in that first game. Plus there was some definite promise seen in some of the WR's.

in last weeks pre season game? if so that's awesome. maybe we should always use 3 qb's like teams use multiple rb's. just kidding. plus it can't be too hard to rack up passing yards on 2nd and 3rd string db's. buts its nice to have 300+ passing yards.

If you say so. According to NFL.com we are the #2 passing offense in week 1. Only 3 teams put up 300 yards passing/receiving.
