I wonder if the time off was planned or a way for Philbin to temper his CJ message, by saying you break the rules you're out, but obey the rules and I'll give you a break here and there?

And why even say this part:
We're not allowed to rest vets without someone trying to stoke a fire about it?

Sounds like maybe the pace is catching up to these guys and he's simply resting them while he can...the problem Philbin is facing is the QB race.... Tanny, I think looked a little better than they anticipated and MMoore is still MMoore. In the next game, they may get more time with the ones just to see these two guys....

I would like to see Tannehill with and against the ones a bit to see if he can keep looking like he is the QB of the future.

Do you think RT being better than MMoore could be an issue? MMoore makes errors here and there.

IMO, RT shouldn't start because "he's the best chance for winning" but rather when he's ready. I'm not sure where Coach stands after he said that.

You always start your best chance at winning. The knock on Tanny is experience. You get that by playing the against the NFL speed. To quote Herm "you play to win the game" if Tanny is the best option for thay he should start.

Izzy seems to be tweeting more than normal today. Good to see Tanny throw a bomb on a first string DB.

Ru Roh (Scooby Doo) Says he tweaked something while trying to cover Wallace.

Has anyone came out and said if this guy has his weight right or not?

Tanny seems to be etaring it up today against the 1's. Apparently he's taken the most snaps with and against the 1s.

If the same thing happens tomorrow, he has to start Friday

I think it's potentially an issue. Matt Moore could be for whatever reason not as good as last season, and Ryan Tannehill could be reasonably considered "better" but still at a stage where he's not fully developed and you've got the potential to damage his growth.

I really hate doing this, but thanks to NYPHan23 over at another site, I appreciate his diligence and hard work getting these tweets...please don't thank this post..

If I knew how to follow tweeters efficiently I would do it myself, but I suck.

Sounds like Tannehill is having a very sharp day..

Miami Dolphins training camp weather: Wet start, highs in the upper 80s.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Also worth noting Miami Dolphin fans are invited to watch training camp at 8 am - 40 minutes earlier than usual.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
RT @dolphindude1976: you do a good job, but it is hard to gain your attention with a question» cause I've usually answered yours 10 times.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Miami Dolphins still list 89 players on their roster after Chad Johnson's dismissal Sunday.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Connect the dots: Philbin dumping Chad @ochocinco probably makes it impossible now to cut David Garrard. He can't afford to lose vets #XOmar

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Just about every player on the Dolphins knows a healthy David Garrard is the best QB Phins have. Dumping him would be waving the white flag

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
About to head out to the field for the next-to-last day of open practice. Team in front of the fans beginning at 8am today...

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
I'm still waiting for Matt Moore or Ryan Tannehill to raise their hand & prove to the coaches & their teammates they DESERVE to start Fri.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Dolphins legend Jason Taylor is about to join the WQAM Joe Rose show in the 8am hour.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
RT @CaneNation2011: Can Devlin have any shot at seeing first team?» Come on....seriously!

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
The Pat Devlin is the answer crew keep me laughing. But come on! Seriously....come on!

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Still no David Garrard. Just Tannehill, Moore and Devlin.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Artis Hicks is not in pads for morning practice, but is standing with o-linemen.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Jonas Gray still rehabbing his knee.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Dansby and Burnett looking like they'll be off to the side again today.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Eric Steinbach also also not in pads.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Eric Steinbach and Artis Hicks in shorts today.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Looks like we'll have the return of Marcus Thigpen today.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Cameron Wake not in pads

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Brian Hartline off to the side rehabbing.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Cameron Wake, Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby all limited today. That's a lot of money on the shelf.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Roberto Wallace works with first team WR

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Jason Trusnik and Gary Guyton working with 1st team 4-3 defense.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Artis Hicks and Eric Steinbach are not in pads today either. Guessing the vets are being rested. This is a key evaluation week.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
DT Tony McDaniel, who injured a knee against Tampa Bay on Friday night, is sitting out his third straight day.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
It appears Clyde Gates will work again. Looks like he's pushing past the hamstring issues.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Matt Moore takes first reps with starters...WRs are 19, 15 and 18.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Eric Steinbach has compression sleeves on both legs.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Now Marlon Moore takes some first-team reps with the offense.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Players going through individual drills.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Dansby off to side...bouncing medicine ball off a small trampoline that's angled towards him and catching it.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Ryan Tannehill gets the first team QB reps today.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Tannehill gets first snap with the starters in 11-on-11 (half-speed).

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Now Tannehill with starters in first 11-on-11 drill. WRs still 19, 15, 18.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
First-string receivers are Bess, Naanee and Wallace (so much for third team).

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
John Jerry is the starting right guard.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
After two plays, Moore replaces Tannehill.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Tannehill starts with a nice roll out pass to Davone Bess. Great catch.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
John Jerry works at first-team guard (with Hicks and Steinbach out).

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Now Matt Moore in

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Ryan Cook is the second team right guard.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Moore working with second-team offense. Two incomplete passes.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Matt Moore's two passes were two incomplete passes on screens. IMCOMPLETE SCREENS?

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
No more back-to-back drills. Perhaps in fear Pat Devlin's arm might fall off from taking every single backup rep.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Pat Devlin passes right to Ryan Mahaffey

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Marlon Moore ends drill with an end around.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Vontae Davis now working in his old role, starting right cornerback. Marshall not on the field in base.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Ryan Tannehill's two passes were a decent screen to Reggie Bush, & about an 18-yard pass to Davone Bess on a roll out.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Now hurry offense with Matt Moore on first team

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
Vontae out there with first team defense for the moment.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Now Tannehill's turn.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Olivier Vernon taking Cameron Wake's spot at defensive end. Guyton and Trusnik back at first-team linebacker.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Tannehill working with second-team on this drill

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Now working on special teams.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
The second team defensive tackles today are Ryan Baker and Kheeston Randall.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Jonas Gray rehabbing on wet ground slipped and got back up.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
I'm seeing a lot more 3-4 fronts than 4-3 fronts lately. Just sayin.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
I just mentioned to a colleague that I might not have to write about Chad Johnson today. Then I remembered: Hard Knocks is tonight. Sigh.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Clyde Gates back for kickoff return

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Julius Pruitt is an AMAZING special team player. I love to watch him during these periods. He makes it fun.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Julius Pruitt was limping around yesterday but it appears he's back on the giddy up today.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Working on goal line passing routes and pass coverage

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Davone Bess had the opening catch. Secondary stops last three plays.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Matt Moore with a nice pass to Marlon Moore.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Goal-line passing drills. Nice catch in the end zone by Marlon Moore on Trenton Hughes.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Tannehill and Davone Bess connect on same drill. I'm telling you, they see Bess as a red-zone threat.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Tannehill to Davone Bess with a sharp pass on goal line deep into the end zone.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
    Naanee with a drop.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Pat Devlin pass to Legedu Naanee dropped when it hit Naanee's hands

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Just saw Legedu Naanee drop his 5th pass of training camp. And yes, I'm keeping count.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Julius Pruitt motions for and gets a flag on pass interference by Anderson Russell

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Julius Pruitt drew a pass interference call on Anderson Russell during goal line 7-on-7s.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Anderson Russell clearly cuts off Julius Pruitt's route, resulting in a flag and a fist-pump from Pruitt.

    Jesse Agler ‏@finsjesse
    Team moving into pads.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Sean Smith deflected a end zone pass to Roberto Wallace.

    Ben Volin ‏@BenVolinPBP
Bunch of vets not in pads today: Wake, Steinbach, Dansby, Burnett. Still no Hartline or McDaniel

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Dolphins about to go 7-on-7. Marlon Moore working with first team.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Richard Marshall with nice pass breakup vs. Davone Bess.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
    Davone just redeemed himself.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Tannehill with a nice pass to Julius Pruitt.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Just saw FB Jorvorskie Lane bring the wood on RAC, driving his body through Nolan Carroll.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Tannehill connects with Naanee with a bullet for six.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Tannehill with a TD pass on an inside route to Legedu Naanee

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Ryan Tannehill just connected with Legedu Naanee for a 15-yard TD during 7-on-7.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Then Naanee follows it up with his second drop of the day.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Legedu Naanee just dropped his sixth pass of training camp.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Then Legedu makes a tough catch vs. blanket coverage by Richard Marshall.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Quinten Lawrence with a strong pass breakup leaping

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Matt Moore with a pass to no one. Looks like a bad route.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Special teams drills again. Gunners working on tackling.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
I hear Lauren Tannehill is in the house. Expect almost every media member to start going nuts.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
This Dolphins team spends more period on special teams than any team I've covered. I respect that.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Marcus Thigpen back practing working punt return.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Totally missed the fact Marcus Thigpen, who is nursing a knee injury, has returned to practice.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Once again, @PriscoCBS is at practice, meaning my attention has been diverted from the field.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Sorry folks. The Dolphins are moving the practice inside now.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Cameron Wake was just sharing some small talk with Jeff Ireland as the team entered the bubble.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Eric Steinbach also has a knee pad on his left knee. I'm sensing old man aches and pains.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
I'm thinking Josh Samuda makes the 53. That's a good Jeff Ireland, scouting department find.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith pulled up Limping on a pass coverage of Roberto Wallace.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Came off to the sideline frustrated.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Sean Smith just pulled up limping after allowing a Roberto Wallace catch during 1-on-1s.

    Ben Volin ‏@BenVolinPBP
Season Smith just pulled up lame in a 1 on 1 drill. Talking to a trainer. Not happy

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Jeff Ireland is chatting it up with Brian Hartline.

    Ben Volin ‏@BenVolinPBP
Pulled groin for Sean Smith. Getting stretched by a trainer

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
During OTA season BJ Cunningham was Miami's worst receiver. Right about now he's middle of the pack. He's coming on strong.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Roberto Wallace takes his next rep in the drill. Sean Smith still working with trainer.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith now back on his feet.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith now talking to Brian Hartline and Jimmy Wilson on the sideline.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Reggie Bush is taking a knee. That's the true sign starting outside & moving inside isn't ideal for sharp finishes.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith still sidelined for team drills.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Nolan Carroll in for Sean Smith

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Smith sits out when they return to 11-on-11. Tannehill QB. First play: TD pass.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Legedu Naanee just caught a back shoulder touchdown on Richard Marshall. Ryan Tannehill on the throw.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Ryan Tannehill had a 40 yd TD pass to Legedu Naanee vs. Richard Marshall

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Legedu Naanee's TD was good for 40-yards, with plenty of YAC.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Strange: Nolan Carroll in for Smith, not Vontae.

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
This is Tannehill's day with the ones. Moore working w backups.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Matt Moore just connected on a 40-yard TD bomb to BJ Cunningham.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith back out on defense.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith defending Roberto Wallace. Looks fine. Still kicking out the legs.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Jeff Fuller just caught a 20-yard pass from Pat Devlin. Good adjustment to the ball.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Jimmy Wilson just broke up a Tannehill pass to Charles Clay.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith still bothered by an injury, but trying to work it out during this team still.

    Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly
Reshad Jones just tackled Daniel Thomas behind the line of scrimmage and Thomas came up limping, pulled out the action

    Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley
Candidate for Senate Connie Mack is at practice today.

    Izzy Gould ‏@IzzyGould
Sean Smith has been defending Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace.

I know. Even Volin praised Tannehill but had to throw in that all 3 QBs threw a bad pick, like that has neer happened.

I think it's time for everybody to accept that this kid is good, and that he might really be our best chance to both win now and prepare for a better future

Well I'd be fine with that. I just hope you weren't thinking Playoffs this year, because you might be disappointed. Playoffs?! I just hope we can win a few more games with this kid taking his lumps.

Then again, if our defense becomes who we thought they were, we still have a shot at the wildcard. Not gonna let those guys off the hook.

If Tannehill can follow up today's good practice with another one tomorrow, it might be tough not to give him the start Friday. And then, we shall see.

Legedu Naanee, Roberto Wallace and Julius Pruitt continue to be the three most consistent stories of training camp and OTAs, amongst the wide receivers. Without over-complicating things, I think it's getting safer to say all three will make the roster along with Brian Hartline and Davone Bess. The 6th spot, if they even open up a 6th spot, will really come down to the wire. It's between Clyde Gates, B.J. Cunningham, Marlon Moore, Chris Hogan, Rishard Matthews and Jeff Fuller.

Jeff Ireland is a backer of Clyde Gates and to me all he would need to do to be that 6th guy would be show up in one of the preseason games and be the player he was in Week 17 of last season. If Gates isn't able to do that I think Jeff Ireland would back Rishard Matthews. That's my personal opinion. I think Mike Sherman might back Jeff Fuller, while Ken O'Keefe might back B.J. Cunningham whom I have a pet theory was his guy in the Draft. I don't think anyone is backing Chris Hogan except perhaps Jimmy Wilson, and Marlon Moore's good practice today is probably too little, too late.

But that 6th spot, if it even exists, is going to be a photo finish.

One thing I find interesting is after that embarrassing deep play to Tiquan Underwood, Jimmy Wilson has put together thus far (according to reports) a strong week of practice. He's responding to his own failure. I like that.

given how pruitt gets praised for his very good special teams play, he is probably really the one who has made it i would assume, if it really is between these guys for the 6th spot, i would keep gates just for his speed and try to stash fuller on the PS

Wasn't it Gates that caught the TD pass from Tannehill?

The more Hartline continues to miss practice, the greater the odds are that we'll keep six receivers.

As a side note, each NFL team gets an Injured Reserve Exemption starting this year. It's a short injured list... 8 weeks instead of a full season. I think the Dolphins would wait to use this on a high profile player as long as possible, instead of Hartline/Garrard.

Keenan Allen of Cal and Marquess Wilson of Washington State remain atop my board.

Keenan Allen has a special combination of size, quickness and spunk. He's fearless and physical, good enough hands (drops the ball some), and again it's kind of mind boggling you don't realize how big he is because he moves so well. He works a lot on the inside but has the potential to work on the outside. He has a very, very high ceiling in my opinion.

Marquess Wilson is Chad Johnson as a young man, maybe a little faster. He's got the same build. He's got the same feet. He's got the same hands. He can run after the catch. He can get open anywhere at any time. The only issue is, like Chad, he's not overly physical. He also has to work on his stance at the line, as it's straight out of high school, not balanced. Once he does though he'll probably be even better. With the move to Mike Leach's system, he will have SUPERB production this year. You'll be hearing his name...a lot.

Robert Woods I like but not as much as most people. I see him as like another Mario Manningham, not necessarily another Greg Jennings or someone like that. I think he developed very fast, very early, but there was a little bit of a plateau happening and it's hard to get the taste out of my mouth of how much better Marquise Lee looks as a pro prospect on the same team. Lee is not eligible for the draft, by the way.

Justin Hunter has mega potential because in addition to being a track and field giant, on the field he really displays superb hands and he runs his pretty well, pretty balanced and quick. I don't think he's got Randy Moss type speed, but he does have Randy's build. My problem is health. He's skinny as hell on that frame and sure enough got hurt all of last year. He needs to show he's back from the injury and can stay healthy.

His teammate Da'Rick Rogers is a little more interesting for the moment, until we see Hunter back from the injury and producing again. Da'Rick was a high recruit, another guy you don't realize how big he is because he moves well. Run after catch is his game, a lot of balance and quickness. But he's not fast, I don't think. And I hear he's a major a-hole (don't know if that's true or not).

A guy I like a lot is a small school player Aaron Mellette. I know that several teams are even as high as the 1st round on him. He's your great all-around package receiver. Great attitude, great work ethic, good size, good balance, good hands, good quickness, good run after catch, etc. Everything sort of good but nothing truly GREAT, I don't think. It's hard to get a gauge how fast he is and so the testing will actually be important for him, as will the All Star experience. But I thought he was easily better than Brian Quick who damn near went 1st round.

Terrance Williams has been standing out for Baylor for years. I think he's faster than Kendall Wright but doesn't necessarily have Wright's play making run after catch ability. I find it real hard to get over Tavon Austin's size, even though he's a play maker...and I keep hearing Stedman Bailey is really the guy to watch there. I think Cobi Hamilton is overrated. Ryan Swope is a good player but not one I'd pay much for, IMO. Aaron Dobson seems underrated.

Andre Debose is your straight up Mike Wallace wannabe. Ridiculous speed and deep play making ability.

I think Roberto Wallace has made it as well, though they may be continuing to try and send a message to him by having him lower on the official depth chart than he really is. I say that because he was marched onto the field as soon as Legedu Naanee and Chad Johnson were marched off the field...which means in actuality he was 2nd string even though officially on the depth chart he was like 4th string.
