Man did the Yankees almost blow it. I had money on them to win today by 1 1/2 runs and boy was I pissed when it was 8-7. Why take CC out in that position? He didn't have a high pitch count, and the most of the people who reach base was because of their fielding.
You're going to be paying him off of a career year where his numbers such as BA/OBP/OPS/SLG are so far off from his career norms (it some cases almost over 100 points) it should stop and give everyone a pause. He's just not this good, he's having a career year but he's just not a .353/.399/.530/.929 player. There's been no evidence he's this player in the majors or minors, his numbers are misleading do to an incredibly high BAAIP just isn't sustainable each year. Maybe the guy gets lucky this year and it continues but if you're banking on continuing year by year (because he still isn't walking at all, he's got 35 walks in almost 500 plate appearances) you're going to be set up by disappointment. Plus he's a corner OFer with no power and an average runner. But hey if you want to give him 10 million a year for 3 or 4 years, by all means I hope Cashman listens.
It's true though. It's literally not possible. If he stays at a .390 BABIP for the rest of his career, it'd be the highest anyone's ever hit by a very large margin. It can happen for a month, half a season or even sometimes a full year. It's not going to extend beyond that.
I think if you read up on him, you will find the way he changed his approach to the game after leaving NY, he got more serious about it, trained better etc.....took care of his body, go find a snapshot of his in NY, and him now..there is a difference.....again when he was here he had the tools....it was just a matter of him developing them all and he has/is apparently......we make fun of the ST "finding a new pitch" or "losing a few pounds" but this is beyond that he has made a conscience multi-year effort to get better and for that you gotta nice the kid credit... this year I agree a crazy career year, and the numbers WONT happen again granted but given the above factors, and what he did last year and this year, I don't think he is that .250 hitter anymore....he is pretty veteran at this point, has seen most of the pitchers in both leagues, nothing is really going to creep up on him...thats all I am saying....I am not saying he is going to be the next Barry Bonds.....I joke around on here because of you guys.... I have to say as the Yankees....paying Swisher on a 3 year deal at 12M+ or Melky on a 3 year deal at 6-7M a year....I am doing Melky, I am sorry....there isnt that big of a drop off either way, so might as well get a littler younger and go a little less expensive...
Fair enough. I'm not saying he's not a good player, because maybe he is. I'm just saying he's not nearly this good and I know that as fact.
Hunt bro, u aight!!! Where are you my friend, dont worry it is just a little slump.....come back here for Pete's sake and yell at me.... Btw who is Pete in "Pete's sake"?
Yes I realize Melky lost a ton of weight etc and he is having a very good year but I'm sorry signing him to a 3 year deal would be a mistake. He's a corner OFer who doesn't hit for power, doesn't get on base, has average speed, and is an average defensive OF. I guess I'm missing why I should be excited about him. He's a useful player but I obviously don't see the same player you do. And he had a nice year last year, I wouldn't say it was anything special though, especially again when you compare him to other corner OFers.
Again I agree he isnt a superstar like say a Hamilton etc, that isnt my point here Fink... 3 yr deal is a mistake? you would do Swish over him on 3 years? or you going year to year on him.....? quick little snipnet.....Melky has 8 years in while Swish has 9....at the end of the 3 year contract MC will be 31, and Swisher will be 34 He is a career OBP is .339 Swishers is .352 MC career BA is .285 NS is .254 He has 56 fewer doubles than Swish in 1 less year played...split it in 1/2, so he has rough 28 less doubles, while MC has 30 triples to NS 9....same type of gap power.. I am not even looking at the HR numbers I bet NS kills him, I agree NS has more power sure, put MC in YS and his power numbers go up too, but HR's in my opinion are overrated (as we see with this Yanks team) I am looking more for contact MC struck out 556 fewer times in his career...... 83/30 MC stolen bases/caught stealing compared to NS 11/15 in his career, they both aint Bolt but MC is faster and or just a better baserunner... MC has 30 less total hits in his career... Walks NS kills him by 350, which is baffling how he isnt so much further ahead of MC on alot of categories especially OBP... MC has more assists, fewer errors, and has a better fielding % in the field than NS, however Swish is more versatile because he can play a little infield..... MC is 3 years younger than NS... Mind you now, this quick stat snippet takes into account that MC has only really been doing well for 2.5 years!!!!! They are both the same player pretty much, ie nothing special grinder ballplayers so to speak...however one can be had for under 10M, and one is going to command over 12M (atleast) on the open market or (as BDH point out) through arbitration....and given Either's contract at 17 per, I can see some dumbass owner giving Swisher 15..... Are you of the thinking that MC is just going back to batting .250 next year? like this whole thing is a 3 year fluke? Lastly would you take him over Crawford right now, knowing what you know about both, and you had to make a decision by today....
I wouldn't sign either Swisher or Melky for 3 years, so yes I'd go year to year with them. And if I had a choice to sign either guy for 1 year and not factoring in any dollar amount I'd probably choose Swisher, as I think he's the safe choice since he has the longer track record. And Melky has only been doing well for 1.5 years, he was awful with the Braves in 2010. If you're not factoring in contracts and just talking about the actual player I'd still rather have Carl Crawford who has been an above average player in every single year but 1 (2011) since 2004. If you're talking about contracts included then of course I'd rather have anyone besides Crawford, simply because it's a bad contract and the guy is going to need TJ surgery anyday now. Bottom line is Melky's numbers simply scare me. He's never been this good nor shown this at any level, minors included. His BAAIP is insanely high, he's still not walking or hitting for power. I just don't think he'll come close to putting up the same numbers even next year let alone for 3 years. I just think any team that signs him is going to sign him based off of his 2012 stats alone and that team is probably paying for a career year. That's just my opinion and if I'm wrong I'll be more than happy to admit it but his numbers just seem to be getting a boost off of his high BA and nothing else. It's not like he's hitting more HRs or more extra base hits (his 10 triples this year is a function of his home ball park), nothing has really changed about his game except it appears he's getting extremely lucky when he puts the ball in play. Now if he was all of a sudden hitting 30 HRs and 50 doubles and walking, then yes I'd say he's a changed player but I just think he's a lot of smoke and mirrors this year.
What are your thoughts on Jeff Francoeur, Jeff Karstens, Nate Mclouth and Anthony Rizzo? EDIT: I really should have a "Ray Finkle Hall of Fame for Baseball Players I Talk About Way Too Much". Francoeur, Karstens and Rizzo would be 1st ballot HoFers. Melky would have to wait a year or two, although I've spend way too much time on him these past few months.
One of these days I am going to try and find the JF talk.....Karstens was fun last year.... stop hating Melky, he has HoF potential....
It's in an old Mets thread from whatever year he got traded to them (2008 or 2009 maybe?). It's pure gold with all the Mets fans arguing with me that he's a changed player after maybe 2 weeks of a sample size (in which he barely had a walk if at all). Let's just say I won that argument in the long run.... but reading back there were some crazy points being thrown out.
thank you. I tweeted Buster Olney 100 times trying to find out the answer. Now yankees are winning so Protest is really thrown out or weaken if they do lose this game, am I right. Because MLB can say they got the lead back anyway
Hey at least I have given it a 2 years with Melky and he has actual numbers to lean on hahahah On a in game note going on right now....granted Chavez, Suzuki and Ibanez are what they are at this stage of their career, but watching all three of these guys especially EC, and RI go with the pitch and use all fields in every game is such a joy to watch....their meaning to this years team is more than just their actual numbers.... If you are a fan of the art of hitting, watch the highlights from today's Yankee game....
How could the Yankees throw AJ Burnett to the Pirates for nothing? That is not a typical move for a usually stellar organization like that. Was there friction between AJ and management? I don't think it was a contract issue. How could the Yankees let a CY Young winner slip through their fingers when they had control?
The protest is thrown out if the Yankees win. If they lose, no matter how (even if they tie the game or take the lead and then lose), the protest is still in force.
Because A.J. Burnett couldn't pitch well consistently enough in the AL, specifically the AL East. Actually this was a much better response.
Yankees got rid of AJ for nothing because that was his worth. He was terrible here. Could not get out of the 1st inning sometimes. He really struggled in his last year in NY.
AJ Burnett I will always say when he is on, he is about as untouchable as they come, true nasty flith that he throws.....problem is exactly as above, he is too inconsistent, because of the AL East, and the lights were to bright in NY, he couldn't handle it.... Pitt is a perfect place for him, probably about 1/10 the media there, no offense Cash but nobody cares out there (before this year), no pressure, hitting light line-ups....I am not surprised he is having a good year.... I am rooting for him though thats for sure....and it isnt out of the realm of possibility for him to get Comeback POY & the Cy Young....his numbers are that good...
Even if he batted .141 last year? That's a bust man. At least Francoeur hit over .237 in every year of his career!
Yeah, could be short term roster spot till CC returns too....hard to say until we see Lowe toss a few.
This pretty much explains it, because CC hasn't really been himself recently......I can finally lighten up on him....
The Yankees have signed Nicaraguan left-handers Corby McCoy and Luis Garcia, writes Ben Badler of Baseball America. The 16-year-old McCoy is one of the top talents out of Nicaragua in this year's July 2 free agent class, according to Badler. McCoy, who received a $150K bonus, has an athletic and projectable 6'3", 170-pound frame according to Badler. His velocity has touched 91 mph, but he's inconsistent in that regard and often sits in the 85-88 mph range. Garcia's bonus figures to be one of the Yankees' six sub-$50K exemptions. As per Major League Baseball's new CBA, the six highest bonuses under $50K won't count toward a team's $2.9MM international spending cap. Badler describes Garcia as raw, but projectable. The 6'4", 185-pound lefty's fastball sits in the 85-88 mph range as well. Badler points out that McCoy's signing puts the Yankees at exactly $2.9MM in terms of non-exempt bonuses. They signed Luis Torrens for $1.3MM, Alexander Palma for $800K, and Yancarlos Baez for $650K. Any further signings in excess of $50K will result in at least a 75 percent luxury tax on the overage. As Badler outlined in this piece back in May, exceeding the signing cap by more than 15 percent will result in a 100 percent luxury tax and will also limit a team's 2013-14 spending pool to $250K on just one player.
Lowe 4IP, 2 hits, 4K, 0R, 0BB onn 44 pitches agaisnt Texas as predicted..... "huh isnt baseball Aaaaaaaamazing Suzyn?"
Kuroda has been such a nice surprise.....I hope they keep him this offseason....he probably stands to make a nice payday on the open market...Boston would probably throw a some money at him seeing they have nobody that can win any games for them.... Watching him interact in the dugout too he seems to like it there....
Kuroda has been great for the Yanks. He will be 38 next year. I don't see him getting a big pay day or multiple years. I think he sticks with the Yankees. Possibly for a little less even.
Can't see how or why he's sign for less money (or even offered less money) as long as he stays heathy and effective.
For a 1 year deal to a pitcher who stayed healthy all year and pitched well in the AL East? Yes teams would be lining up to sign the guy at 10 million. He'd absolutely be worth it, hell he'd be a bargain at that price. Again we're talking a 1 year deal here, age doesn't really matter all that much, healthy and effectiveness are the keys here. Now if we're talking multi-year deals, they yes I can't see how any team would give him 10 million a year for 2 plus years based on his age, it just wouldn't be smart. But for 1 year? Yup I'd take that gamble. My guess is he stays with the Yankees because they will offer him arbitiration and he'll simply take the 12.5 or 13 million.
Pedro Feliciano came through his second rehab appearance in the Gulf Coast League with flying colors, pitching a perfect first inning in the GCL Yankees’ game against the GCL Pirates on Tuesday afternoon. After allowing a walk and a hit before striking out the side in his first rehab appearance on Friday, Feliciano was much more economical this time out; needing only about a dozen pitches, the lefty retired both Gustavo Nunez and Elvis Escobar on infield ground outs before punctuating the performance by striking out Jonathan Schwind looking. Feliciano had three days off in between his first and second appearances, and while there is no word as of yet on his third, he is likely to pitch in at least one more GCL game this week before being moved up to a higher level. The 35-year-old Feliciano’s 30-day rehab window expires on September 9, at which time he could be added to the Yankees’ Major League roster for the first time since being signed prior to the 2011 season.
