We may be stuck with him for next season but I don't think it would be too hard to trade him in the final year of his contract. It all depends on how well he pitches.

Yeah a solid effort all around. I have lost all faith in the club, though.

That was by far the most frustrating loss of the season. Inexcusable.

On a side note: What are you guys' opinion of Ozzie? I enjoy baseball, watch regularly, and like to think I'm rather knowledgable as a fan, but am by no means a guru of the game. How much of this skid falls on his shoulders? I know the bottom of the lineup is pretty dismal, but are a lot of the team's failures because of poor management? I personally love Ozzie because of his attitude.

Baseball managers have next to no influence on the outcome of the game, and not much influence on the day to day performance of the players.

    Basically, ain't his fault.

This. It's the most overrated aspect in baseball, imo. They have some influence on the game when it comes to the line up, bullpen and such. But it helps out a lot when you give the guy something to work with or the talent you give him doesn't under achieve like Morrison, Sanchez, Bell, etc.

He manages the bullpen pretty well and doesn't kill offensive chances by bunting a lot. Good enough for me.

I disagree that MLB coaches don't have day to day impact. The amount of games these players play a year, they have big impact onthe day to day. These managers have to know what strings to pull and not to pull, how to get the most out of these players 162 times a year, and how to get them ready to play, mentally and physically. That has a huge impact. MLB coaches are more about that then strategy over the course of the season. For instance, someone like Terry Francona, I never thought he was a great game manager and strategy coach, but he seemed to be able to get the most out of his players and they played hard for him.

Then, please explain how a World Series champion manager is running a roster that has underperformed for all but one month of the season.

A team can get hot at the right time and win it all despite the coach. Its about players still. Just like any other sport, bad coaches, average ones have championships. Just because the coach won a championship prior doesn't mean much

The bolded part is why you're giving too much credit to the manager.

Its about players in any sport. But take a look at TBs line up and bullpen and tell me Joe Maddon doesn't get the most out of his players constantly. If we were loaded, it may not matter one year because everything clicks, but all the sudden they fall in a rut, or get bored etc. Managers are big in baseball, just not the way most people believe.

Again, every sport is about players. So im not acting as if MLB managers are more important by any means.

You should have watched more Red Sox games then. Francona was very good at the in game stuff as well. He was probably neck and neck with Maddon as the best in the game. It's unfortunate that 1 horrible month ruined that view. Plus don't forget Francona probably had a harder job than an average manager considering the media, market etc. It can't be a fun job managing the Yankees or Red Sox (just to name a few) everyday.

Bad managers can do much more harm than good but even bad managers can win, it's because of the players that play on the field. Ron Washington is a terrible manager yet made it to the WS in back to back years. Dusty Baker and Ron Gardenhire are also poor in game managers that have had success.

The old saying goes: a good manager will help his team win a handful of games but a bad manager will help his team lose a lot more.

    Absolutely true.

I think Maddon is an exception though. You're absolutely right, he gets his players to play hard for him and gets the most out of them. But it also doesn't hurt to have the starting pitching staff he has. That's not to take anything away from him but again it helps to have good players (especially pitchers).

Agreed. They might not have the 1927 Yankees for a line up but they have had a loaded SP staff who have remained pretty healthy since 2008. And their bullpen has been solid each year as well (thanks for the extra pine tar Maddon orders each year).

I'll take a loaded pitching staff over offense any day of the week.

I meant more lineup wise. We are weak there. But we put up runs and we get timely hits.

They're not Padres weak though. There's some thunder and thump in there when everyone is healthy. A line up with a healthy Longoria, Pena, Upton, Jennings, Zobrist, Scott and Joyce isn't bad.

Now I will watch the HR Derby, but only when Stantion is batting. He was a must get for this event. The next one the MLB should get should be Bryce Harper. This is the time to show off the young studs and future superstars.

Just got back from the game tonight... I gotta say guys, stubhub is the way to go for tickets. if you wait til 30 minutes before tickets stop being sold online (2 hours prior to gametime) you can get sweet deals. I managed to snag 2 tickets that are normally 40 or 45 bucks for just 10 a pop. Great deal.
