Apparently Mike McCarthy and staff are enamored with some receivers in camp (Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel) and coupled with Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Donald Driver, he is their best trade bait. In Green Bay he's a luxury. Philbin might be interested. What say you guys?

But Philbin will probably keep him on the bench. We have no need for instant offense, especially not in the playoffs.

You don't like someone who scored 7 TD's as the 3rd or 4th option not counting the TE?

I don't think it would be a great idea. They need to find a long term option better than Hartline and Bess, not roughly equal to them.

He's better than both of them, imo.

He's got Bess' hands but more bigplay ability. That and he goes up and gets the ball, successfully.

Well, we need 3 WRs in case Hartline or BEss gets hurt. Hell, those three plus OchoCInco at #4 is a decent WR corps. not great, but throw in our backs and TEs, it's got potential

my fear is we have two average starters at WR with zero depth. one of them goes out for a month, it'll be really painful to watch. If we can't get a Greg jennings - type stud WR, then we need depth

Philbin has been frustrated with drops, & that's what Jones has been known for in GB. Some of the worst hands around.
How many did Rodgers toss last year ? Brandon Stokely had a 1000 yard 10+TD season once too.

If anyone knows what he can do, it's Philbin. So if they do decide to give him a shot you know he's got confidence in what he can do.

I honestly think it would be a good idea. Collect all the good WRs that work in this system that you cn, don't get caught up in oh he's only a #3 or a #2. I think Hartline works in this offense. We'll see on OchoCinco but he's only here a year anyway most likely. I don't have high hopes for Bess long term in this offense but we'll see. The only rookie I have real hopes for long term is Rishard Matthews. I see nothing wrong with adding Jones to that party. We got an extra 3rd from the Marshall trade, so why not?

tough/circus catches are nice... it's consistency that matters.

    Agreed.
    Agreed, however....

James Jones signed for 3 years / $9.40 million with the Green Bay Packers. He is making $2.30 million in 2012. My gut says we're better off sticking with the guys we have at that rate. It looks like they want out of that deal, he's an underachiever, yet will probably go for closer to a 3rd/4th. We are building through the draft, Philbin's words !

Bess is consistent and you can see how far that gets you. You need another guy like this that can make those big plays. Hartline isn't on his level, imo.

Doesn't mean he can't improve on it either. Jordy Nelson was dropping everything last year and this year, not so much.

No two ways about it, Jones has definitely dropped his share of passes. From 2008-2011 he drops 1 for every 5.5 he catches. We criticize Brandon Marshall but from 2008-2011 he's only at 1 drop for every 7.3 catches.

Bess and Hartline haven't had Arodg tossing the rock in a pass heavy offense, nothing even close. Yet they put up some comparable #'s. I'd imagine you put either of them in Jone's spot and they could muster a handful of Td's a year too, out of the frickin 35-45 there are to go around ! I agree he HAD potential to be better than them, but he's close to 29, under contract ( paid more than any of our WRs), and has the dropsies ! Your avy rules btw.

Ty. It works both ways. If he was in another offense that wasn't completely stacked, he'd get more reps and might improve. I have no problem paying him more than Bess or Hartline.

We criticize Marshall for a lot more than dropping passes. There's also the matter of the $7 or so million dollars between the two.

I did add to that post that there were 35-45 tds to go around in that offense. But I guess my main argument against trading for him would be that he's not young and not exactly consistent. We already have Ocho and Nanee taking a roster spot. I'd of course drop Nanee for Jones this instant, Ocho too I guess. My concern is the development of guys who can be contributors down the road for RT17. The jets haven't exactly helped Sanchez with the likes of Holmes and Burress. Not complaining there !

How is a guy like Ocho young or likely to contribute down the road? Jones is only 28. It's hard to improve on consistency when he's not on the field consistently.

I see very few guys here at WR that have a good chance at contributing in the future.

The decision on Jones should be similar to Flynn, where it should mostly be based on what Philbin thinks of the idea. Seems relatively low risk/high reward if we can get it done for a 4th/5th.

Misunderstanding there...I meant that Jones is more of the same.... we cant keep dumping prospects for cast-offs like Ocho and Nanee. Enough is enough. I'm pretty sure I'd take Jones over either of them, but he is only rumored to be available in trade, when we claim to be building through the draft. I think he's also lined up for closer to 4 mil in 2013, when we have some valuable players that need resigning !

But for a 4th....maybe. 5th and possibly a 6th if necessary... you got a deal partner. Even better they do run a 3-4, perhaps we have someone that could interest them. Nanee is gone in this scenario of mine, possibly Ocho too. I'd also see this move as a possible knock against resigning Hartline tho. Pleasure doing business !

If I believed we were in a "win now" mode, I would say go get the guy. But I don't believe we are in that mode, not this season. So personally I'd rather try to develop some of the young speedsters we already have and continue to build with the draft, rather than giving away a 3rd or even 4th for this guy.

It's not that I don't want to, nor expect not to, win more games this year than last year. I just see an entirely new coaching staff, new offensive scheme (WCO) and new defensive scheme (more 4-3 than 3-4), and I don't see us becoming instant playoff contenders this season. We did that in Parcell's & Sparano's first season and got blown out in the first round of the playoffs. Why did we go so far downhill from there? I believe the 11-5 season was more a combination of 3 things: 1, an easy schedule, 2, smoke and mirrors, and 3, Chad Pennington.

I like our QB stable as it stands right now, but want to see Tannehill brought along slowly and don't see a Pennington in either Garrard (whom I expect to start in game 1) or MMoore who I suspect has shown us the best he's got, which is not at Pennington's level. I like MMoore and expect him to be a very good backup either here or somewhere else down the road. But he's no Chad Pennington. Also feel the same way about Garrard.

All this to me points out this season we go 9-7, maybe if we're lucky even 10-6. But we're not ready to compete in the playoffs and would likely get knocked out again in the first round. So I would rather give our young speedsters the playing time and opportunity to see what they have got, and develop several of them into good WR's. Again, this puts us back to building through the draft, which I prefer over buying James Jones. That's my humble opinion, and I'm stickin to it

We paid a 28 year old Dansby a record (at the time) ILB contract. What's the problem with paying someone who, as the fourth option, scored 7 TD's less than $3 million?

We do this every year. Maybe Moore will develop, maybe Pruitt will develop, Wallace might contribute, give Ryan Grice-Mullin a shot. How about we go for production?

I don't see Jones as a bad option. Personally, I have him behind both Hartline and Bess, but his contract is palatable enough for a third WR whom you could start in a pinch. Obviously you want more consistency. That's where Philbin's sense of whether Jones is developing that consistency matters. I see this year as all about getting enough bodies at WR who can play and whom you can develop. I don't get the 85 signing, but Jones would make sense if you believe he'll continue to develop.
