I disagree Nappy but you could be right, he could drop that far. If he did then I agree with DJ, I almost have to take him regardless if we took Tannehill. Flutie diudnt have his hands, his armlength and Wilson is a better athlete. you can say he is 2 inches shorter but Gruden even said he measured even5'11" at combine. other places say it as well but if you want to make a 1/2" to a 1 1/2 diff into a mountain you feel free. But when height is teh only issue on a qb, then it is an issue that can be worked around. Flutie didnt have the arm nor the strength of Wilson, Wilson is a very smart qb. I would take Wilson over Cousins or Osweiller where their issues will take serious time to correct and for them to develop, where Wilson has already shown behind a huge oline in Wisc that he can overcome his height issues.
Gruden is wrong. He measured 5'10 5/8. Even Steve Young said a special player may be able to be successful at 6 flat, ex. Him and Brees. However, he thanks god he wasnt under 6, because he thinks he would of been to small. I hope the guy becomes successful, I love him since at NC State tearing my Noles an a new *******. I just know the books are extremely stacked against him and its very likely he wont be. So to take him in the first 3, is just not smart IMO.
that was me, it was my mock not a response to this thread. And if you think taking him in second round is nuts then I won't tell you I think he's the second best QB
Also according to the Chinese zodiac he was born Day of the Rat and Month of the Pig. I don't think it has any correlation to football success however.
I love this thread, cause I love me some Russell Wilson, what a precision type Qb, there is no wasted motion with this dude, when he needs some space, he finds it as quick as possible, when he decides to run, it's only at the last second and he gets to point B with no wasted steps, it's his angles that he finds that are truly elite, angles when he runs, angles when he scrambles, angles when he passes, he always chooses the right angles.. He's the real mother grabbing deal man..Wilson is capable of being the biggest playmaker amongst all the Qb's in this draft.
Tannehill lost ALL his big games at Texas A&M this season. Remember, A&M was a Sleeper Nat'l Title contender (I also had them as a dark horse title contender). That team had the schedule and the offensive talent in place. Tannehill actually regressed this season after finishing with a strong 2010 end of the season. He is just a product of the ESPN/NFLN media hype machine. You judge a QB on the following attributes: 1. Does he consistently move the chains 2. Does he consistently put the ball in the End Zone while in the Red Zone 3. Does he consistently handle pressure & pressure situations well 4. Does he instantly make the players around him better 5. Does he avoid the costly mistake. 6. Does he create opportunities when none are present 7. Does he win Ryan Tannehill has 1 of those attributes (#6), Russell Wilson has ALL. The most idiotic argument that some make is the statement "He has 1st Round ability, but I'd take him in Round 4 because he's 5'11". You're making the statement that a player has the TALENT to go in Round 1 but something unrelated to his talent is making him go in Round 4. Illogical Statement. Furthermore, at 5'11 he only had 3 passes batted at the LOS this season. Brock Osweiler at 6'7 had 18 passes batted at the LOS. Height doesn't matter: Talent, Toughness, and Heart does. If the Dolphins take a WR at 8 & Wilson in Round 2...there's no doubt in my mind that you would've gotten a HUGE steal in Rd 2
Height does matter, theres a reason there has never been a successful career from a QB under 5'11. Sorry to burst your bubble, but height matters. If your so sure height doesnt matter, bet me money he will go in the first 2 rounds. Please
The argument is skewed. Not a lot of guys haven't been given the chance to play. That's like saying "There's never been a 'Running QB' to win a Super Bowl".. How many QBs would you classify as "Running QBs" in the history of the league as opposed to the amount of "Non-Running QBs". Its about probability. Height didn't bother him at NC State nor at Wisconsin. And the difference between someone that's 6'0 and 5'11 is meniscal. Russell Wilson throws like a 6'3 QB, while Osweiler throws like a 5'11 QB is allegedly supposed to throw like. Just look at the tape and honestly ask yourself is Wilson's height a detriment to his on field success?
Dudes in the NFL are bigger and faster. That's why we have the combine. Its like the SAT's. You can have a 4.0 at a crappy high school, but that don't mean you're ready for Harvard.
you are clearly missing the point. successful in college does not translate to success in the NFL. you can get away with being a shorter QB in college, especially if you're extremely athletic like Wilson.
So now all of the sudden Wisconsin doesn't resemble an NFL Offensive Line? So now the Big Ten is in the FCS? I can see if Wilson played at the University of Chicago..but this is a Big Ten team that goes up against NFL caliber talent in practice and during games. Dudes in the NFL are the same Dudes in college...this is a common misconception that everyone in the NFL is Bigger, Stronger, Faster, Better.. Can you legitimately make an argument that Blaine Gabbert is an NFL-caliber QB? Matt Cassel? Tyler Palko? There are many great players that are not playing in the NFL.. its all about circumstance & opportunity.
If I were "Clearly missing the point", I'd be making an argument for an Tommy Frazier making it at the NFL level. Lets not sit here and act like Doug Flutie wouldn't have won that playoff game for the Bills in '99
Well, Rob Johnson did win it. It was a complete fluke and the Music City Miracle may have actually been an illegal forward pass, but whatever. There is no NFL precedent for a QB of Wilson's size having anything more than spot success. Flutie had only spot success. Certainly, perhaps somebody will break the mold, maybe it's Wilson. but I'm simply not comfortable drafting Wilson and declaring "Our QB search is over!"
http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/QB/Russell-Wilson.php Wilson was also under 60% completions until this year when he completed 72%. His career completion percentage of 61% isn't great. now he is fairly accurate on shorter throws but his height did lead to problems, even in college, when going downfield. That's only going to be exacerbated in the NFL.
The only college football I watch is Big-10. Even the better Big-10 teams have at best a few players with starting caliber NFL talent. There's a big difference between going up against a defense with 2 or 3 top notch prospects vs going up against 11 players on an NFL defense that were ALL elite talents in college. weren't you the guy that stated that CJ Spiller was going to get 2000 yards? that same logic must be applied to Wilson.
Tannehill and Weeden. I would be comfortable giving those guys a few years before I start looking again.
I would hope they continue looking at QBs until someone actually performs at a high level. Even then, still keep looking.
Yes I did... Has CJ Spiller been given starter level carries? I still believe with his vision & speed, he'll get 2,000 yards IF Buffalo gives him the carries. You're overrating that "NFL Caliber" talent.. its a slight upgrade..
That's a really bold statement...and the chances of him getting that many carries is extremely unlikely, and that offensive line doesn't help.
You are Correct about the additional pieces that's involved in that process, the point I was making about him though was that he has the skill set of the player that would rush for 2K.. The ability to rip off 50+ yard runs with ease
Our QB search isn't over the minute we draft Tannehill either. He still needs to prove himself, just like Wilson would. No one would logically declare their search over by merely drafting a player, without seeing the results in NFL games.
Bingo! And if one truly wanted to manipulate the numbers, you can look at the amount of short/intermediate throws (0-7 yds downfield) that Tannehill had over Wilson. Here's an example: I want you to look at this QB and tell me what you see: Add a lot of athleticism and you have Ryan Tannehill. P.S. For the Record, I loved me some Tim Couch...but looking at him at 17yrs old and looking at him at 30yrs old, I can see why he wasn't successful
So, with that flawed logic, would you assume that Wisconsin could compete with an NFL team and not get blown away?
I would still add a developmental type this year. Going forward, though, unless Tannehill looked horrid in practice, I would not feel we needed that first round QB next year. Our search would continue with later round picks, much like GB did.
The percentage of short passes between Couch and Tannehill are not even close. Tannehill had so many more pro style passes in his college offense. That was one of my reasons for rating Couch as a 2nd round prospect when he came out.
It would be if you consider that Tannehill had receivers that dropped the ball at double the average rate. Factoring in a normal drop rate would result in about a 67% comp. pct. for Tannehill.
Yeah you cant keep investing a 1st round pick on a QB year after year, you should trust your evaluations, and it's not like Ireland would do that anyway.
To be fair... Here's Wilson's Floor
To be fair, every QB's WRs drop passes.. But some pick and choose who they'd make that argument for. Example, the Broncos WRs couldn't catch a cold laying on ice butt naked in Alaska last season..but everyone points to Tebow's completion percentage
