SINCE the Hairspray Warden aka JimmyJohnson days or even longer then that Miami always seems to be good on defense but not so much on offense . Iam wondering is this i lieu of our qb situation ? is this due to our epidemic of bad general managers and bad coaches ? In 2003 we had talent on offense and defense but no qb so I am assuminng the main reason is due to the 28 qb's that we've went through . here is what i dont quite understand . it seems to me that Wanny traded draft picks for aging veteran players and when the moron Cam Cameron came he let both corners go ,our best wrs go and and two of our tightends go but we kept Twinkle toes Taylor who was more of a primadonna then McMichael , welker, Chambers, and even Ricky . its like when we get close to filling our holes filled we create more holes . I know most around here may not have liked those players similar to me not liking our current offensive players . but had we kept Gus Ferrotte at qb or even Griese I feel that we could have won more playoff games. here is how i think that we missed our window of oportunity . I would have kept Surtain Chambers and Welker and maybe Donald Lee or Randy and cut ties with Taylor and Thomas a couple years sooner but how unrealistic to have worked it out like this and with Gus Ferrotte at qb could we have cut down on the number of holes to fill ? . I 'm currious as to how you guys would have handled things
My feeling is none of those teams had what it took to win a championship, I never trusted the defense, and the offense never had enough talent, especially at the qb position..
I think we took a step in the right direction by hiring a great offensive mind as our head coach. There's no doubt the reason is we haven't had any franchise qbs since Marino. Hopefully that will change during the philbin era. That might require another general manager in my opinion.
I don't believe this team is very far off from being competitive and capable of beating anyone. An excellent draft would go a long way toward accomplishing that. A mediocre draft would make the road to get there a little longer. I won't say what I think if we have a bad draft.
truth be told, gus wasn't terrible...the defense was always fine, the qb play was atrocious and i think chambers was always overrated...dropped passes when it mattered...never a huge fan of his
So, you would have let Jason Taylor go the year after he won Defensive MVP? to keep Chambers, Welker and McMichael? Guys who either always underperformed (Chambers) didn't catch TDs (Welker) and injured (McMichael)? and you think we would have won playoff games with Brian Griese? So, how many games did Griese start after he left Miami? How many playoff games did he win? This is a business, with a salary cap. You don't get to keep everyone you want. It's very rare that a team gets very talented on both offense and defense plus have a blue chip QB, and when they do they usually make it deep into the playoffs.
IMO since about the time we got JJ our offense has been pretty vanilla. The concepts were somewhat dated and never cutting edge. It's not so much that the plays we had were different, but that they weren't organized in a way that they built on each other or made it easy for the QB to succeed. Sure there were a few games where the play calling was spot on, but not enough of them. Second, we been going through so many coaches that we never developed any continuity or gave players the chance to develop in one system. And third, we never invested in the right QB with elite skills. Partly through bad choices and sometimes bad luck or circumstances, but the end result was that we ended up bargain hunting and building around what we hoped was "good enough" instead of biting the bullet and paying for the elite talent.
Well, I'm not sure how I would have handled the situation since the days of JJ. I'm no NFL GM. But to answer your thread title - WHEN MIAMI FINDS A FRANCHISE QB.
Miami still hasn't filled the one position needed to improve the offense, the QB position. I don't see anyone left in this years draft who is capable of taking this offense to the next level in the future. Therefore I don't see any major improvement in the offense in 2012. Until they are actually able to draft a quality QB or sign one in free agency, the Dolphins will remain a very mediocre offensive unit. I only hope they figure out how to move up and draft Matt Barkley in the 2013 draft.
I think you are 100 percent right and the development Of Chambers really causedhim to under perform but i thought his numbers were good in his rookie season. as for McMichael he had the best stats for a tightend but not having a good qb made him look average . Welker is a hall of famer and he wont go in as a dolphin and we truly need a hall of famer o nour roster.
When? 1) got the coach & offensive coordinator to build & run an offense 2) need the Franchise QB, another major piece on the offensive line & playmaker TE. the current WR-Corp will develop with the QB, the RB Stable is flush 3) given these things are resolved in 2012, it a matter of coaching. should see a major improvement by mid-season Soon!
The Dolphins D throughout the last 2 1/2 decades has been, at best, just above middle of the road. Never dominant. Always flawed. Really, even the killer B's (better than anything since) had its weak spots (power running game). Last time Miami had a great all-around and dominant D was '72-74. It is also rare for a team to win a title with a middling offense. Even Baltimore, arguably the worst offense in the modern era to win a title, had some stars on offense (at TE and RB), a good OL and a QB who learned not to make mistakes.
