If philbin broke down the doors and said "get me Flynn he's THE guy he has IT" he would e a dolphin. Obviously
Philbin and dolphins feel other (better) options are out there.

If I'm Alex Smith I sign that as soon as they present it. He isn't getting that anywhere else including San Fran.

Put me down as one of the few who really like the signing, except the money involved.

Denver post may be putting pressure on San Fran to come back with an offer as Peyton still hasn't made up his mind..

Didn't he turn down a 3 year, $24M deal from SF?

I don't hate Alex Smith. I noticed him playing a lot better the year before Harbaugh got there. In their season opener I believe it was, he played great against a Saints team that had just won the Super Bowl and scored the go ahead TD with 2 minutes left after playing a great game. Saints ultimately answered. Watched him play fairly well over the past two years. He's not terrible, but he's not $8 million a year on a team that could have used Eric Winston and Mark Anderson good.

I am Alex though and we Alex's think alike. In fact it would be cool if the Dolphin QB who gets us out of this slump shared my name. Not that it is what makes me think he would be a good fit here

This has Ross all over it, so if the 49'ers don't get Manning then he thinks he screws Harbough from having a QB imo....

Like I said in the other thread I believe almost every single QB in the league is a system guy. You build an offense around their strengths and weaknesses. I don't think there are even five guys I wouldn't consider system QB's. Sure some guys have fewer weaknesses than others but if you don't match a player to a system that fits him he will not have success.

Honestly I can't think of a guy available to us (including Flynn) who fits the Philbin offense better than Smith.

I had no idea he was even going to be available to us, I figured him resigning with San Fran was a sure bet. If you read my posts on Flynn I always said I'd be upset if we signed him to be our starter and not compete with Moore. I was never huge on Flynn. I wanted him as camp competition to Moore and have the best QB start.

I don't think he's any better than Matt Moore so I'm not sure what the point of this would be. Why not just draft somebody?

IMHO Alex Smith's best years are still ahead. I like Matt Moore, but Matt wasn't a #1 overall pick. Smith might not have been worthy of that #1 selection, but he had to have some talent and ability to be drafted that highly. Personally, I like the player he grew into as the season progressed. That's definitely not the same Alex Smith we saw years 1 through 6.

He beat Brees in an outstanding playoff performance, so what's to say he couldn't do the same in Miami if we hypothetically met NO in the Super Bowl?

Exactly, and after the kind of QB and leader Smith developed into last year, I don't have a problem trying to build an offense around his abilities b/c I believe you can win with him, and San Fran proved that last year IMO.

I like that he has the athletic ability to run the bootleg. It is an important part of the type of offense Philbin likes to run and it matches up with what I consider to be the greatest strength of Smith. His mechanics stay good as he moves around and he actually does have great short accuracy. The 49'ers didn't take advantage of his biggest asset IMO.

Great point, and it makes a lot of sense.
After being exposed to Harbaugh he just seems to have a better understanding and grasp of the game and decision making ability. We might've missed out on Harbaugh (although I don't think we ever had him to begin with), perhaps the silver lining becomes us getting a QB that he helped turn around who moves on to have his best days in Miami. :knucks:

I will say--- I feel significantly more comfortable and happier about Smith than I do Flynn, where as excitement for Flynn would've been based on my trust in Philibin's assessment. I'd actually buy a Smith jersey as soon as some Asian company reproduces it, but I would've held out a while on Flynn.

First their OC was a sure thing to be our coach, then Manning was a done deal to them.

    Exactly.

What I saw last season was a team treating Smith like a rookie. I am not put off by that simply due to the fact that he never got a chance to settle in like one. He was thrown directly into a fire from the moment he was selected. His confidence was destroyed early on and last season he finally had a coach that said "You know what? I'm going to build a game plan around you and allow you to regain some of that confidence back. We will allow you to grow into this system rather than expect you to carry this team"

I honestly expect there to be the growth of a rookie QB to a second year starter in Smith next season. This is his first REAL opportunity to show what he is capable of. He never had a real chance at success early on. As my sig says if I am wrong I will eat my hat.

Who cares if he beat Brees. Brees ain't a cornerback. The Saints lost cause their defense sucks and their offense scored too quickly. Smith played great in that game. Kudos to him for coming up big in a big game, but let's not even begin to compare him to Brees in any way, shape or form.

Yep, they actually broke the Ricky Williams failed drug test a few years ago before anybody knew that the Dolphins and Broncos were talking about a trade to send Ricky to Denver.
