Too funny! I am the same way about carry weight, but I am also OCD about picking up everything that could possible be useful. I think alchemy is a good tool. I make restore health, paralysis (awesome when you are up against a tough opponents) and invisibility potions. And the big one for me is fortify enchanting. Once I get alchemy to 100%, I can make a fortify enchanting potion and that will be +25%. Then you use it to enchant a ring, circlet, bracers, necklace and a Falmer helmet with fortify alchemy. You can wear the cirlcet with a Falmer helmet (sort of a glitch) so you can have all 5 +25% fortify alchemy articles equipped. Then you make several fortify enchanting potions that come out to be +29% each. You use that on a new set of apparel, wear it and make more potions of alchemy which come out even more powerful. Repeat one more time and you can then make uber weapons. The catch is you need 100 in alchemy and 100 in enchanting. So I make potions all the time and just sell them. I also pick up iron daggers and enchant them with whatever. Both of these things raise up those skills. If you go this route, you need a ton of soul gems as you build your enchanting skill. So buy them when you can.

    Pretty neat, huh?

Here are some of my stats:

    Magic items made: 104
    Potions mixed: 319
    Poisons mixed: 66
    Ingredients harvested: 1,013

I only use magic weapons so every time you recharge them you add to your enchanting skill. Also, disenchanting an item builds the skill as well. My alchemy is currently a 50 and enchanting is at 79.

EDIT: I didn't think potions like cure disease and blacksmith could be made. I just found out hawk feathers is an ingredient for cure disease, so I know you can make that one.

Can't get into alchemy too much. Not when you can revisit the same sites and pickup the healing and magic potions.
Just finished the mages' quest, starting the theives guild.
Got 100 smithing skill, just need to level up two more times to get dragon armor smithing skill and heavy armor weightless skill.

I don't use alchemy or enchanting. Well unless you count recharging my magic items with the Black Star as enchanting. Alchemy is mostly useless to me. I'm more than fine with all the potions I find. Hell my chest in my house is full of spare potions. I should probably start focusing more on enchanting to be honest. I have a good level from recharges, just no perks in it.

Figured out a good way to find the daedra hearts - Mehrunes Shrine has Daedra that respawn there every couple of days. 2 outside, 2 inside. I think you need to have completed the mehrunes razor quest first though.

Actually since 1.3 came out I'm not running across the Daedra any more. The stuff inside is respawning but the enemies are not. Which is fine, because I've got a nice stockpile of around 12 Daedra hearts anyway.

I'm in endgame mode in preparation for the final quests of the main story line. I'm a level 66 and I went into enchanting so I could put together a ridiculous set of weapons and armor, using the method Bam described up above. I'm planning on dual-enchanting my helmet with Water Breathing and Archery, but there's only one slight problem ... I have yet to come across any type of Water Breathing item to disenchant, and I'm roughly 180 hours into the game. I'm somewhat frustrated and starting to think I'm never going to find it.

Once I get my guy completely set up I'll post the vitals so you guys can all drool and be jealous.

I have a Steel Helmet of Waterbreathing that I found in a random chest. It is the only thing I have found with that ability and I think it was pure chance.

I hope they didn't patch the Falmer Helmet/Circlet glitch (normally you can only wear either a helmet or a circlet - not both). That would suck. Also, getting alchemy to 100 is brutal. Not sure if you are there yet, but the more expensive the created potion value is, the more you level. I was making a ton of poisons and my bar was barely moving. Then I noticed that the poisons were worth 26 gold. Invisibility potions and ones with 2 effects (even if they are contradictory) are worth a lot. Make those. There is also an online calculator that will show you the best ROI for potion making. It suggests you buy every ingredient a merchant has every time, no matter the cost (except for the elemental ingredients) because you can make a ton of money with the most basic potions. I am in the 50's in alchemy and I need to do this. My enchanting is closing in on 90. I have a barrel full of close to 100 enchanted items that I will eventually sell.

I just used that calculator and went from alchemy 50 to alchemy 90. I had every available ingredient with the exception of 3. Some ingredients I only had a few of. But I was able to make 190 potions with what I had. I wore a circlet that was +17%, bracers +15%, ring +10% and necklace +10%. As my alchemy skill rose, I added some unused perks to max out the Alchemist perk (5/5) which means all potions are twice as strong. If I had to guess, I'd say I have $100,000 in potions. Most were above 1000 in value - some as high as 1,700.

I also went from an overall level of 48 to a level 51. I am really glad I hung onto all the ingredients I picked up in all the time I've been playing. And some of these potions are kick ***. I made a poison of slow that slows the target 50% for 64 seconds. That's killer. I have some paralysis poisons that last for 15 seconds. Not many creatures are going to survive a 15 second beat down.

Anyway, use that calculator. It kicks ***.

Yeah, they were respawned the first time I went back but not seeing them anymore. So I'm thinking they respawned and were there after the fix but now they aren't coming back. Doh. I'll find another way to get them.

Well, I have a set of fortify smithing armor that consists of +29% ring, necklace, leather bracers and leather armor. I also have made Fortify Smithing +147% potions. I made an ebony sword in the usual fashion (neither the smithing armor or the potions help the creation of items - just improvement). I then put my smithing armor on and drank my smithing potion. With the grindstone, I improved it to this:

Back at the College, I have a set of Fortify Alchemy armor (+29%) that allows me to make +37% Fortify Enchanting Potions. I drank one of them and created this:

200 points of fiery death! My next weapon with be a daedric knife with absorb health and soul trap. With my 15x sneak damage, I will be a silent killer. I am going to have an awesome set of weapons and armor. It took a ton of work to get all I needed to make this stuff, but it's worth it :)

So I absorbed my first dragon. I am on the quest to see the WhiteBeard's now. I have my personal protector now. Any tips what I should do now? I been going almost linear so far.

The amount of skills and stuff to level in this game is overwhelming.

I agree with these guys. I did the College of Winterhold quests, the Thieves Guild quests and the Dark Brotherhood quests before I was 1/4 through with the main quest. I also did a ton of miscellaneous quests as they popped up. All the experience from these side quests make it easier as you progress through the main quest. I am now 2/3 of the way through the main quest and I am up to level 54. I love doing all the side jobs and kicking the crap out of whatever I meet along the way.

See the WhiteBeards and then go do some side quests for a while. And have fun :)

Okay, as promised, here's my character:

    Overview

    Name: Thor
    Race: Nord
    Level: 73
    Vitals: Magicka 200 / Health 440 / Strength 380

I set out using the Warrior Archetype. Early on I knew I wanted to use a sword-and-shield combination because it was significantly faster than two-handed weapons. Midway through the game I spent some time honing my archery skills, which allowed me to be deadly not only up close and personal, but from a distance as well. Later, as part of my end-game (at least where the main quest is concerned) I focused a little bit on two-handed. As it stands today, I'm closing in on level 81 (the current level cap) and I've got really one more perk tree that I can focus on - though I haven't decided exactly what I'm going in to.

    Skills & Perks

    • Smithing: 100 (All)
    • Heavy Armor: 75
    • Block: 100 (All except Quick Reflexes)
    • Two-Handed: 65
    • One-Handed: 100 (Armsman Lvl. 5, Fighting Stance, Hack and Slash Lvl. 3, Savage Strike)
    • Light Armor: (All)
    • Archery: 100 (All)
    • Sneak: 100
    • Lockpicking: 91
    • Pickpocket: 73
    • Speech: 100 (Haggling Lvl. 1)
    • Alchemy: 100 (Alchemist Lvl. 5, Physician, Benefactor)
    • Illusion: 100
    • Conjuration: 100
    • Destruction: 48
    • Restoration: 43
    • Alteration: 100
    • Enchanting: 100 (Enchanter Lvl. 5, Insightful Enchanter, Corpus Enchanter, Extra Effect)

I'm currently working on my heavy armor and two handed skills, but without some associated perks it's kind of difficult, even at this advanced level. As you can see, my perk selection really allowed me to put together a lightly armored monster. Using one-handed over two-handed allows me to be a little bit more passive with my combat style, and it helps me conserve stamina. Early on I decided that i was going to specialize in hand axes, which freed me up to use perks in other areas. Also, even without taking any perks, 100 Sneak can come in quite handy, especially with the proper equipment (more on that later).

    Armor

Primary Armor Set: Thunder God Armor (Dual Enchanted Dragonscale Armor)
    Armor Rating: 1054

Out of all the armor sets on the game, light and heavy, this one is probably my favorite. I do like the Glass Armor and even the Leather and Scaled armors, but this one is my personal favorite, though I do wish I could forgo a helmet and not lose my 25% armor bonus for Matched Set. Aside from the ridiculous damage protection, I've taken the liberty of crafting a set that's essentially Alduin-proof.

    • Thunder God Helmet: 46% Archery / 72% Magicka Regen (Will be Water Breathing if I can ever find the damned thing)
    • Thunder God Armor: 36% Health Regen / 36% Stamina Regen
    • Thunder God Gauntlets: 46% One-Handed / 46% Two-Handed
    • Thunder God Boots: 43% Shock Resistance / Muffle
    • Thunder God Shield: 23% Magic Resistance / 28% Magic Resistance (That's right - there are two different Magic Enchantments that you can use)
    • Thunder God Amulet: 46% One-Handed / 28% Magic Resistance
    • Thunder God Ring: 46% One-Handed / 28% Magic Resistance

Secondary Armor Set: Archmage Robes w/ Archmage Equipment
    Armor Rating: 116

I don't often go adventuring with magic in mind, but when I do, I prefer to wear my Archmage Outfit. Okay, bad joke aside, I actually like this unique armor set, and since I haven't really spent a lot of time leveling up my magic, it helps quite a bit when I try to do a poor impression of a mage. I've added a couple items that also focus on the Magicka side of things.

    • Archmage's Robes: 15% Magicka Cost / +50 Magicka / 100% Magicka Regen
    • Archmage's Bracers: 46% Archery / +72 Magika
    • Archmage's Boots: 43% Shock Resistance / Muffle
    • Archmage's Circlet: +72 Magicka / 72% Magicka Regen
    • Archmage's Ring: 72% Magicka Regen / 28% Magicka Resistance
    • Archmage's Amulet: +72 Magicka / 28% Magicka Resistance

    Weapons

For weapons, as I mentioned I'm primarily using one-handed with a shield, specifically axes, because I found them to be significantly faster than the two-handed weapons, which gives me more speed and precision in combat. I do use a bow from time-to-time, especially when dealing with long-range enemies. Late in the game I've been spending a lot of time with a Daedric Warhammer, but that's more to level up the skill than anything else. All the stats I'm quoting are based on my primary armor set outlined above.

Mjolnir I (Nord Hero War Axe)

    • Damage: 234
    • Enchantments: +28 Shock Damage / +43 Magicka Damage

    Mjolnir II (Daedric War Axe)

    • Damage: 256
    • Enchantments: +28 Shock Damage / +43 Magicka Damage

    Mjolnir III (Daedric Warhammer)

*Note: I've got a set of Daedric Armor (who doesn't) that I'm using in conjunction with this weapon to level up my Heavy Armor and Two-Handed skills. Stats are based on that set. I've been thinking about remaking this to get +28 Shock onto it but I haven't gotten around to it - yet.

    • Damage: 151
    • Enchantments: +10 Shock Damage

    Gandiva (Daedric Bow)
    • Damage: 174
    • Enchantments: Soul Trap (4 seconds)
    • Arrow Selection: Steel, Ebony, Daedric

    Summary

I didn't bother covering the Shouts and Spells that I've acquired, though at this point it should come as no surprise that I'm focused specifically on Shock and related spells. Storm Call is one of the most powerful Shouts I've run across, and works perfectly in the context of this character build.

That said, Magicka is only ancillary to this particular character, who I've designed to be pretty much indestructible. Most of the time I'll simply rush an opponent, with superior armor and equipment most don't really stand a chance. That said, with some of the equipment I have (Muffle) combined with 100 Sneak and Archery, I can take a more pragmatic approach to battle, allowing the action to come to me.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how this character has turned out, and I'm probably going to wrap up the main storyline quest this morning. From there, I still have the entire Civil War questline to finish (I still haven't decided who I'm siding with - it seems to me that both sides are filled with A-Holes).

You'll have to take on a quest from a strange boy in Windhelm. If you speak to the characters in town one of them will mention a "strange boy" as a miscellaneous objective.

Do that mission and the questline kicks off.

Just got the game yesterday and love it. I made a dark elf, and want to focus on using magic this play thru. Not quite sure what skills to use yet so I have been holding on to all of mine. Blown away at the amount of stuff to do in the game as well. I feel like this and Gears will be all I play for the next 6 or 7 months.
