The club house is turning on Logan Morrison. We're bringing in Hanley's friends. Sh!ts about to go down!

explain to me why, with that short porch in right, are we not shoveling money at Prince Fielder and not Pujols?

    Fielder isn't Hispanic.

    And that's a serious reply.

I don't think that's the main reason why. Fielder's weight could be a major issue. Plus, he's horrible defensively.

defense at 1st base is overrated and we just signed a 260 pound relief pitcher.

I guarantee it's the deciding factor. Fielder's offense more than makes up for his defense.

No, it isn't. And his offense doesn't always make up for it. He has to hit the way he did last season for the next 5 years to be worth the contract he wants. He hasn't shown the ability to do that consistently.

But when your comparing two players, you take the one that is a good defender.

Plus, he's really bad defensively. Horrible. He needs to be in the AL as a DH.

That might be true, but many feel anyone in the NL giving him a long term deal is not wise given the fact that he's already that big at his age. And that 260 lb relief pitcher fields his position pretty well from what I understand. I honestly do feel it has most to due with the fact that Pujols is hispanic, but he's also the bigger name by far and will almost guarantee sellouts all season long.

If this were all about signing hispanics, we would have signed K-rod instead of Bell.

I agree with this 100%. Spending 10 percent of your payroll for 5 percent of your innings pitched is a very inefficient use of resources. Sorry AnonyAshraf, it's not going to grow on me.

Again, his offense makes up for his defense. And at 1B I’m not looking for the Joel Anthony of MLB.

Rosenthal makes the logical argument that the Marlins should forget Pujols and concentrate on pitching, which is a premise I basically agree with. But I can't really argue with this sentiment either:

Nope. It just wasn't a good baseball move. Sure would be nice to have an extra 27m to throw at Pujols/Wilson/Buerhle

It's definitely the least important defensive position but he's so bad at it, he needs to OPS about .950 for his offense to make up for defense enough to be worth the contract he's asking for. He's done that in exactly half of his years.

If we're getting anymore offense, I'd prefer Pujols because there's a very real possibility of increasing revenue significantly by tapping into foreign Latin markets like the A's with Japan.

Plus doesn't Fielder's body scare you? That body type doesn't age well. I'd be really worried giving him more than 3 years without the DH spot to fall back on in case he gets so big the ground starts to sink around 1B.

I may be in the minority here, but I don't want us to sign Pujols. It has nothing to do about his age or ability, but I just don't think we can support a payroll if you add his contract onto what we have already done. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that we have been aggressive this season but what happens if despite all the best hopes the attendance issue doesn't get fixed? The one thing I don't want to see is a deep playoff run or a world series win and then a fire sale. I'm tired of this lets contend every ten years and then rebuild stuff. I want us to be a legitimate contender every year. If a new stadium and a new name we have the opportunity to rebrand ourselves, and we have. Look at all the positive media coverage we are getting, and for the first time in a long time we are being taken serious. All the is destroyed and we become the same ol marlins if we have a repeat of 97-98.

Again, that is not the case every season. If he's hitting in the .800 OPs range, it does not. He has to hit like he did last season every year to make up for his defense and base running. He hasn't show the consistency to do that.

Thanks, I found that interesting. I think the biggest thing to look at here is also how much being a tenant of the Dolphins has hurt this team. I don't know the total number, but I know we lost a lot of revenue having to pay rent and giving up parts of the parking and concession. It could be that with everything you just said plus not losing that revenue anymore that the team will do well even if they don't average a sellout for every game. Also we studied in one of my sport finance classes the honeymoon effect for new stadiums. All new venues almost always sell out for the first few years, but attendance starts to decline a bit after that. I guess if we can win a World Series or go deep in the playoffs within those first 3 years AND keep the team we won with, we may finally net a consistent fan base.

Also the Marlins are very good at being creative with contracts. I'm sure they will front load these deals where they are paying a good chunk of these contracts now when the rest of their payroll is so low and they have all the revenue sharing money they've saved up for so long. The interesting thing to me is this seems to be a Loria led thing with Sampson not necessarily endorsing all of this. Everything you've ever heard from Sampson has been about never paying too much even this offseason when he said they might spend up to $100 million in total payroll but most likely wouldn't go higher. You get the feelling that little slime ball isn't all that happy about his step-daddy spending some of his inheritance.

    On to the juicy stuff:

Lets say he does come here...Miami is officially the most hated sports town, is it not??

Miami was already the most hated sports town well before Pat Riley brought a bucket of championship rings to LeBron’s conference room.

I don't know, can't see how it would beat out New York. Surely the Heat are probably the most hated NBA team but I doubt any fans outside of the NL East or Cardinal fans would hate the Marlins. Do any NFL or NHL fans hate the Dolphins or Panthers that much?

I actually think fans without a rooting interest are happy the Marlins are finally being major players, I know I am, I think it's good for the game that a team, especially a small market team, is signing players to big deals.

Really? I mean I'm shocked if that's really the case, it's not like the Marlins have a long history of winning (which always brings out the haters) or have had players on their team that people can't stand (like an Arod or Barry Bonds type of player) or have an obnoxious fan base or anything like that. Maybe it's because I'm an outsider but I just don't see the national hate for the Marlins, unlike the Yankees or Red Sox or Phillies for example. Sure fans from the NL East probably hate the Marlins, that's normal but I doubt fans in say Seattle or Houston really care enough about them to say they hate them. Like I said before I think people are generally happy that it was the Marlins who signed Reyes (or are in the Pujols sweepstakes) instead of the usually Yankees/Red Sox/Phillies/Big Market Team mix.

Watch ESPN on the few occasions they deign to talk about the Marlins. It’s usually pretty negative. Loria and Samson also have negative reputations, albeit correctly, IMO.

What I think Anon isn’t really saying is that, nationally, Miami is regarded as a bandwagon town of non-sports fans. Yes, Miami is an event town, and we will show up to glitzy events. But there’s an underlying loyalty—why else would we keep going to Dolphins games?—that’s utterly missed by the rest of the country and transforms into a “Miami sports fans are awful, they don’t care, they’re ignorant, etc” sentiment.

Yeah, I think if the Marlins land Pujols in addition to Reyes, there will be vocal angst and dislike. Sec already posted some.

I’m not sure what’s left to talk about. 10 years is an absurd contract length as is. Either he signs or he doesn’t.
