yeah fool I saw the post previous mine, afterwards....I can actually feel you yelling at me...

I agree only in the sense of eliminating Type A and B FA's///that was just plain horsecrap....I will say again, if a team wants to allocate 98% of their budget to draft spending, why should they be punished?

This deal seems to benefit the richer teams....who can spend in the draft AND free agency....

These are the new rules for INTERNATIONAL...

    • The international signing limits won't affect the posting system for players from Japan, according to Knobler (on Twitter).
    • Cubans under 23 years old with less than three years of professional experience will be considered amateurs and count against international spending limits, according to Passan (on Twitter). 26-year-old Yoenis Cespedes won't be subject to these limits.
    • Every team will have $2.9MM to spend on international bonuses this offseason, according to Passan. Eventually the limits will be in the $1.8-5MM range, according to Passan. Starting in 2013-14, teams will be able to trade money from their spending allowance for international players, according to Passan (all Twitter links). However, teams can only boost their original spending limit by 50% through trades.
Again, not seeing a problem since Japan's not impacted (the most mature PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE outside the USA), Cubans over 23 not impacted the way I read it, and its only a a cap on the BONUSES for INTERNATIONAL players - not contracts, plus teams can trade this INTL BONUS$ and acquire more if they need it.

    Again, what is the issue?

I strongly disagree with that statement! Slotted draft helps eveyone (just like NFL with QB and 1st pick signing contracts now under control and more reasonable). It doent help the richer teams....its helps the LEAGUE.

heck, even being able to offer a 1 year contract based on average of 125 top contracts is nice (dont know if its like a franchise tag) but by offering it, you get a draft pick. Again, its all for the longevity of the league.

Also, you need to drink a V-8 and stay awake with the details:tongue2:

And what about Cubans under 23? Why should they have limited on what they can or can't be offered? After all they're FAs. Also why limit the amount of money teams spend on international FAs? How is that fair? Texas spend around 17 million on international free agents last year now they're limited to only 2.9? I just don't see how or why there's a limit here.

I respect Jonah, and lots of other folks are currently coming out against it at first blush too (frankly, I think thats the easier side to take - emotion vs research of actual facts which will take time - so coming out against it is easier to fill a column up, etc.)....we will all see what it means for the game in the long run....I think some minds will change and they will admit (I hope) that they jumped to conclusion without giving it a chance, etc. I just dont think it will end up as bad as being made out...

Now, sure, I too could swap sides in the future if harm is found, I will tell you I was wrong if the facts bear it out, but right now, I dont see these changes as significantly damaging to how teams go about putting a winning product on the field.

It's one of those things where Braun was on a better team, so he got the nod. Their numbers were very similar. That's the only reason I can think of as to why he got it over Kemp.

Not sure how I would feel about a Eduardo Nunez/Jair Jurrjens deal. I think Wren should hold out for one of the Yankees top prospects. Nunez does seems like he's got some nice upside though. However, the Braves a nice prospect at SS in the minor leagues in Pastronicky, so they should hold firm unless the Yankees offer them one of those aforementioned prospects.

    I dont have insider:pity:

While driving last night, I listened to Scott Boras XM MLB radio, go thru similar. I can appreciate the concern over DRAFT changes, and somewhat on the INTL signings rules, but even Boras says aside from those two, many other positives were reached.

Even he said his concern on the DRAFT and INTL is speculation about FUTURE drafts where the TALENT may exceed these limits thus a team wouldnt be able to MAXIMIZE that draft in comparison to other drafts where their SCOUTING DEPTS may deem one draft RICHER than another.

I get that concern, but again, he said it was some what speculation that such a problem could exist. He said similar concern over INTL issues, where the TALENT POOL a given year exceeds the $$ available. However, when asked when was the last time such a draft or INTL FA year of TALENT exceeded the resources (using these new levels as the imaginary cap) he pointed out that its case by case for a given franchise. He did point out TB, KC, PIT as big spenders this past draft, etc. He also said, TB, KC, PIT could still invest over the limits, but they would pay the fine (lose the next drafts picks) so to speak.

The other person on the show was Joel Sherman (from NYPOST?) and he asked Boras, "but dont you think the CREAM of the CROP will find loop holes and account for the next 5 years under these rules and find ways to still maximize what the CLUB is trying to accomplish". Boras agreed, and said yes, but these teams shouldnt have to.

Well, thats why I dont see a problem RIGHT NOW. Lets see how it plays out, I get that lower $$ for Draft and INTL FA exist...but thats not a bad thing. And speculating on TEAMs not being able to succeed via Draft or INTL FA as only 2 possible TOOLS to them is premature. But I can see why many are concerned....but I say again, if Owners wanted this...they got it (even with MLBPA agreeing) and these same owners could find out from their GM and scouting depts that things may be impacted...but they may also find out other avenues to improving their club.

In 5 years (or sooner I suppose) they could change it back, etc.

P.S. Boras did mention that in Latin America markets his concern is that the current system is broken where these young kids (13, 14, etc) are being taken out of schools and exploited on the DREAM of American League baseball over education, and said many of the CAMPS have fallen into disrepair where proper food, nutrition, excerise, medical and sometimes even clothing isnt provided, and the Owners of these camps simply want to churn and burn in the hopes of striking it rich on the backs of these young potential ballplayers.

Once injured or deemed to not have it, they are then kicked out and not even taken back to the towns they were taken from.

so, perhaps these financial limits will create a positive change and even create a GLOBAL database of kids with proper age records, and affiliations with agents, etc so they can stop being exploited in the name of American MLB!

Why is it not a bad thing? Teams can spend tons of money on major league players but they're limited in giving anything they want to a high schooler/college player/international FA? How is that fair? If a team thinks that Player A is worth X they should be able to pay that player that amount. They shouldn't have to be restricted.

Regarding the owners a lot of them don't care about how the team does, they just want to make money or own a team for fun so by them limiting how much they have to spend in a draft or international FA is a win for them. All they care about is their check book. And again the MLBPA agreed to this because it doesn't affect them at all so who cares if it hurts how much a high schooler can sign for.

For the main reason - its just a CAP - and soft at that...its not a MAX. They simply suffer consequences if they choose to exceed T&Cs. I have no problem with them trying to reign in some costs but also allowing MAVERICKS to be MAVERICKS.

Since its not a HARD CAP (which I think all sports should have for competitive balance) MLB is still allowing teams to give them anything they want. Its not RESTRICTED if you accept the consequences.

While this CBA still doesnt allow the trading of ALL draft picks.......I believe I read that the rights of a drafted player can be traded (perhaps if they dont sign with original team leading up to the next years draft, etc), and the 6 COMPENSATION/LOTTERY picks awarded to these small Revenue teams can be traded.

Perhaps that will make for additional HOTSTOVE fun!

But my point is if there's no salary cap at the MLB level why should their be even a soft cap at the ametaur level? It's unfair to those kids since this was something agreed upon by the MLBPA thus they won't be affected. Those kids who are getting hurt by the 'soft' cap are.

Really? When did the Yankees or Red Sox drafted Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Eric Hosmer or Dustin Ackley. How else did Tampa Bay get so good so quickly? They drafted their butts off and got Longoria, Upton, Price, Moore etc. Or how the past 3 off seasons the teams that signed the biggest name talent international FAs were Oakland, Minnesota, and Texas. Your statement just isn't true. The amateur draft and international FA was fine the way it was.

First of all you're talking about something that happened 8 years ago (things have changed a bit since then at least use an example that's somewhat current) and also Verlander signed with the Tigers to a 5 year MLB contract for 4.5 million dollar with a 3.5 million dollar signing bonus (which averages to 1.6 mill a year). How the Padres couldn't afford that is beyond me. It had more to do with the owner being cheap and wanting to sign Matt Bush, the local hometown kid, who they signed to a 3.15 million dollar contract.

No Strasburg signed a 15.1 million dollar contract.

And teams like Pittsburgh and KC have been two of the highest spending teams in baseball for the draft in the past few years. I believe Pittsburgh spent around 17 million last year. So I'm not sure you have a point here.

    And they have finished...were?

Simply because they are forced to pay that kind of $$$ to amateurs who odds say, won't make it in MLB for most of them, should be a prime example why the system needed to be reformed, the MLB's club's payroll was what, a little over 2x or 3x of their guaranteed contract money, and you see no problem with this?

I'm not sure what you mean by the first statement but if you're asking about where the finished record wise it's irrevelent as the whole point of the draft is to build towards the future. Best point: Tampa Bay. Just look at Washington and Seattle, two teams that have stunk and put money into the draft and in another year or two watch out. Same with Kansas City. These things don't happen overnight it takes years to do. Patience is key.

And no I don't see a problem with this because small market teams are at a disadvantage when it comes to free agency at the MLB level because they can't compete with the big money teams, so the best way to counteract them is to build from within. You do that by drafting and signing international free agents (and by making smart trades), which is what Tampa Bay has been doing to a tee. It's what the Diamondbacks did the past few years, ditto for the Rangers. Oakland in the early 00s and Minnesota in the mid-2000s. Build from within, of course just because teams throw a lot of money into the draft doesn't guarantee success (much like at the MLB level, the high payroll teams don't automatically win) as it comes down to having smart people in charge or making those decisions.

And yes I'd rather throw a million bucks and take a chance on a high ceiling prospect than waste it on the Mark Kotsays of the world.

This is a business plan? Sink as much money into players who are likely to never have much of an impact, and "watch out"?

    Indeed, "watch out"

KC and Pitt have poured money into those same picks with no roi, capping contract numbers makes perfect sense to allow them to stop the financial bleeding.

I find it hillarous that one points to the Rays, they have fewer people attend their games then you'd find waiting for a table at a decent restuarant on a Weekend evening, if that is some sort of success, we have different versions of what success looks like.

MLB, for small market teams, is all about attendance NR, they do not generate the lucrative media deals that major market teams do, and the ideal of "just win and fans will show up" is proving to be less true as America shifts to "better then being there" home viewing.

So where do they generate revenues to remain solvent if they continue to draw tiny crowds?

Does pouring money into prospects that you cannot afford to keep if they do develop make for a sound business strategy?

I'm curious, what are your thoughts on it?
