That's what its always been proposed. Add the extra WC team and they play 1 game to get it back to the current 4 team post season match ups!

What did you think they would do?

I get that...one game playoffs IMO don't make sense unless it is to break a tie at the end of the regular season.....anything can happen in a one game elimination and often does..

Wow the new CBA between the MLB and the MLBPA is basically going to kill the current draft/intentional FA process. It's actually now going to hurt the teams that spend a lot in the drafts and in international FAs. Bad job by everyone involved in those talks. It might even push players away from the sport now.

    How so??

    • The international signing limits won't affect the posting system for players from Japan, according to Knobler (on Twitter).
    • Teams in the ten smallest markets and with the ten lowest revenues will enter a lottery for six additional first and second round picks, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times (on Twitter).
    • Teams that don't exceed their draft spending limit will have a chance to obtain picks from teams that over-spent, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).
    • Cubans under 23 years old with less than three years of professional experience will be considered amateurs and count against international spending limits, according to Passan (on Twitter). 26-year-old Yoenis Cespedes won't be subject to these limits.
    • Teams that spend more than 5% over-slot on the draft will face a 75% tax, according to Passan (all Twitter links). Teams that go over slot by 5-10% face a 75% tax and the loss of a first rounder. Teams that go over slot by 10-15% face a 100% tax and the loss of a first and second rounder. Teams that exceed slot by 15% or more face a 100% tax and the loss of two first rounders. MLB wanted the top players to be selected in order of talent, according to Passan. This set of rules will also reduce draft spending significantly, a bonus for owners.
    • Every team will have $2.9MM to spend on international bonuses this offseason, according to Passan. Eventually the limits will be in the $1.8-5MM range, according to Passan. Starting in 2013-14, teams will be able to trade money from their spending allowance for international players, according to Passan (all Twitter links). However, teams can only boost their original spending limit by 50% through trades.
    • There will be a “significant” tax for teams that exceed recommended draft bonuses by a substantial margin, according to Heyman.
    • A worldwide draft is a "significant possibility" by 2014, according to Yahoo's Jeff Passan (on Twitter).
    • Yesterday, MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes explained the new CBA in detail. Some highlights: Type A relievers will no longer cost draft picks to sign, the Elias rankings system will be eliminated, the minimum salary will increase, more super twos will exist and blood testing for HGH will begin. Plus, the Astros will move to the American League in 2013 and each league will introduce a new Wild Card team.

What do you mean why? Its for the good of the game. Its why revenue sharing, and split gates, and equal roster size are part of the league. Its finite teams and you try to give equal opportunity. The problem is some owners are not in it to win it...but things like these are small potatoes arent they?

I think much like relegation rules in English Premier League for example....if you are an OWNER in MLB, and you finish in the bottom of the standings you have to give up Ownership! LOL....j/k, but damn some owners suck.

So, teams that exceed in one area (per the rules of what is considered standard) I dont have a problem with bottom rung getting an extra compensation, etc.

I dont see how this is much different (then other rules) for a team looking short term and willing to trade/mortgage one year for the following year potential, etc. and dont find a reason that would "make folks walk away from baseball over another sport" etc that is being stated. Nothing listed is a major concern in the short or long term IMO.

    what am I missing?

MLB is limited the amount of money teams can spend on international FAs. Why? It's not like the big market teams are the ones spending big money for the big names. Putting a penalty on teams going over slot. Taking away draft picks for those teams. Teams spending less money get more picks. No allowing teams to give kids major league deals. Limiting teams on how much they can spend and if they go over loss of draft picks. Etc. With these new rules it hurts teams, especially small market ones, from using the draft to their advantage. If these new rules were in play a few years ago Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Pittsburgh to name a few wouldn't have nearly the talent they do in their system now.

The only good thing about the CBA is it pushes up the signing deadline.

So lets rewards those teams with bad owners, by taking draft picks, and money from the better teams with owners who actually invest into the product on the field, and want their team to be good/better??

It is just a flawed why to think....

No, only teams that OVERSPEND will be penalized. As far as giving low revenue teams extra picks by MLB (and not from other teams) what's the harm?

These low revenue owners will have to PAY these extra draft picks (1st and 2nd rounders) to sign them. Again, if this is all to a path to a HARD CAP and HARD FLOOR so be it. Thats my hope.

And as far as drafting and OVERSPENDING OF SLOT on draft picks, again its up to the TEAM to actually OVERSPEND, its their choice.

Bottomline the Owners are backing this to help control spending on UNPROVEN MLB talent via Draft (or international FA hype machine) - Just Like NFL did, and NBA is trying to do!

Its good for the game right! They are trying to control Rookie Wage Scale and Draft Slot..so be it. I just wish they would have agreed to TRADE DRAFT PICKS, but dont think that happened.

Because it isnt their money, or picks to give away!! It is like MLB saying, whoa whoa whoa you make too much...

again it is crap, put a cap in place then....it is like don't overspend, BUUUUUUUUT we kinda hope you do to keep MLB afloat....so on top of the tax, they take your picks too....it is just bogus...it is like they dont want you to spend, but they really do....

Just put a cap, I don't care about the floor, and lets see how many teams stay competitive, and how many will fold with 5-10 years because they don't have the the "overspenders" subsidizing their team every year...

No, its MLB saying you have a salary slot for this specific draft position...dont exceed it, if you choose to, you will be penalized.

If no one exceeds, no extra picks from these clubs will be sent to non-overspending clubs.

Basically these are the 3 key DRAFT related rules going forward:

    • Teams in the ten smallest markets and with the ten lowest revenues will enter a lottery for six additional first and second round picks, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times (on Twitter).
    • Teams that don't exceed their draft spending limit will have a chance to obtain picks from teams that over-spent, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).
I dont see a problem with any of that, as each team is in control of its own actions....the market size and more important revenue thing is perhaps out of owners control - aside from the valid argument that a WINNING PRODUCT should increase revenue!

Why? If you have the money, and it isn't bankrupt your business to spend who are you or anybody to say how and what to spend it on?

Again spend as you please, but your punishment will be no farm system to speak of, no championships, and if your team isnt good, no attendence...

No the owners are trying to keep as much money as possible for themselves instead of having to pay their employees.

Again though BD its not just the big market teams spending money in the draft or in the international FAs, its also the smaller market teams too. Pittsburgh, KC, TB have all spent a ton of money in the draft and now they won't be able to take advantage of that. They couldn't compete with the big markets dealing with regular FA so this was their way to build from within. Now it limits them.

EVERY SPORT is realizing the reality finally, yes, you need to REGULATE salaries from Draft Slots for unproven talent. Thats a fact of sports today!

I have no idea yet what the slots are.....but I dont see why MLBPA would be against something that sustains the very league they receive a JOB in.

Its a SPORTING LEAGUE...its not Individual CAPITALISM and survival of the fittest to KILL off competition, its purposes of the 30 MLB OWNERS is for the GOOD OF THE LEAGUE and its LONGEVITY and for SPORTING COMPETITION!

And MLB isnt restricting a team from OVERSPENDING, they are simply laying out consequences! Big deal....

Because the player's union is made up of players that don't have to be handcuffed to the amateaur restrictions and they got the MLB minimum salary to go up. They don't care about some kid in high school or college ball or some kid playing in a sandbox in Puerto Rico.

Ok, and since this is a 5 year agreement let it shake out, and see what happens on re-negotiation. From where I sit....I love Labor Peace for 5 more additional years for MLB.

I think you are overstating why current MLBPA leadership would be supporting these measures. It disingenuous to only feel its one sided on the now (grandfathered) vs. the future. Its about sustainability of the product too.

The new deal through the 2016 season gives MLB a span of 21 years of labor peace since the strike-shortened 1994 season and delayed start of the '95 season.

Yes 5 more years of guaranteed baseball is great news but I think you're completely underestimating how this is going to affect the drafting process moving forward and the limits it puts on the kids. It is going to push the duel sport kids to the other sport now since teams won't be able to give the player is "godfather deal".

Since this new Agreement eliminates the concept of Type A or Type B free agents, and replaces it with Draft Day picks being moved IF a team overspends per draft slot, whats the difference really?

Also, I can now sign a FA without losing a pick on a proven veteran (unless they were offered a 1 year contract equal to an average of 125 of their highest paid peers), and only lose a pick if I over spend on an unproven newbie?

That helps teams retain stars for 1 year at a time it seems too.

    Thats smart isnt it?
