The general consensus is that Stephen Ross is a celebrity whore and wants the celebrity name, so the names you will most often see mentioned for Miami when this job comes open are Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, and Jeff Fisher. As Ethan Skolnick said in his excellent article a couple of days ago though, sometimes the celebrity name isn't the best move for the franchise. Miami has tried lots of things since they had the stability of Don Shula. They went for the big name in Jimmy Johnson. They then gave the job to his top assistant and assumed that he would be better during his second round as a head coach. After that, they went for the big name college coach who lasted two years. They then went against their grain and hired an assistant coach/first time NFL head coach. The problem with this coach was that he showed in college that he could not manage a team as a head coach. Cam was dreadful at Indiana. So then, Wayne once again went with the big name to set up the structure of the football team and allowed him to hire who he wanted to. Once again, this has proven to be foolhardy. I warned some of you that Bill was a control freak and wouldn't hire anyone that would go against his philosophy. Now that Bill is gone, his chosen ones cannot stand on their own. So, here is the question. Is Stephen Ross even capable of thinking outside the box on this? Because there is a coach with successful head coaching experience who I imagine very few have even considered at this point. He is qualified for the job, has extensive NFL coaching experience, and has ties to Miami. Marc Trestman Marc is currently the head coach of the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. This is his fourth season as their head coach. In his previous three, he has coached his team to the Grey Cup all three years, winning the Grey Cup in the past two years. Padre and dolfan22 can probably give a bit more info on him since they follow the CFL more than I do. I'm interested in this because the CFL is a wide open offensive league, and I would like to see some good ideas from these wide open offenses trickle into the NFL. Marc also has the reputation of being a super intelligent person, borderline genius if not full fledge genius from what I've heard.
To be honest, probably not. We'll end up with yet another retread, either a "name" or some defensive coordinator that's made the rounds on 3 different teams after their head coaches were let go (each of those defenses, naturally, ranking worse than the Dolphins). The Dolphins will continue to try to match up with the other coaches in our division without recognizing why they're having success where the Dolphins are failing, and they'll offer up the same old same old against them. Who needs genius when you have a philosophy? To borrow a phrase from CK, why bother outhinking your opponents when you can outwork them?
The thing that makes me cautiously optomistic about Ross is, his first "chance" at going after a head coach (eventhough it was at the cost of gutting any credibility from Sparano) He went after, who everyone unamiously thought was the best available (Harbaugh). I know he has ties to him from Michigan etc. But Ross made no doubt about wanting Harbaugh, and imo it showed he may know what hes doing/looking for in a headcoach. I could be wrong (Hence me saying cautiously optomistic), but it's the right line of thinking.
Harbaugh may have indeed been the best choice, but he was also the hot name at the time. Who will be the hot name this offseason?
Was just going to say, Trestman is a weird guy, I follow the CFL and Trestman is a solid coach, the problem is he has a lot of Phil Jackson in him. He will either be Bill Walsh, or working at an anti fur campaign by mid season for whichever team hires him.
Hes not a football guy! He thinking is terms of Dollars and Cents not as a FAN! So the choice would probably be based on finances. The other problem would be that he doesn't know football circles. He will probably rely on his man crush Carl Peterson to make his decisions and hes the one who ruined Kansas City!
Didn't Marc Trestman work for Jon Gruden in Oakland? He would make a good OC candidate, if he were willing.
Hey CK Oour odds just got better seeing your signature! Either KC or Minnesota will have to win this week while San Diego will notch another win!
Yeah one of those two will win, probably the Vikings although I'm hoping for the Chiefs. The banner leaves out the Rams though, who are 0-3 and every bit involved in the race for the #1 overall pick. However, I doubt the Rams will take Andrew Luck. They'll trade the pick for a king's ransom. Still, it'd be nicer for the Fins if they just got that #1 overall pick outright instead of having to pay said king's ransom.
So what's the deal with Trestman? Why is he considered so "weird"? Foot fetish? Is he gay? A swinger? What is it?
http://www.allcoachnetwork.com/trestman/main.html Could be all of the above, he is sort of a football version of Phil Jackson, when interviewed he may talk about trout fishing in British Colombia or Philosophy, or what have you. http://www2.canada.com/sports/disci...stman+alouettes/2268594/story.html?id=2268594
I honestly think no one really knows just which way Steve Ross will jump. We all know he is in business with Peterson so it will be natural for Ross to lean on his friend and business partner. Do I think Carl will or should WORK for Ross? No, and I bet both Ross and Carl see it that way too! Why? Because its the best way to ruin a good friendship/business partnership that I know of! Can Carl give him good direction? Of course and I'm betting he will throw out several names. I will also state that while Ross is seen as a glimmer guy to bring people in to fill seats from a business side after the screwup that Parcells left behind why would he go in that direction again automatically? IMJ he is just as likely to go in the other direction which leads us to think he may well think outside the box. The Guy is a billionaire so I don't think we should sell him short on the grey matter between the ears, he didn't make all that money by being stupid!
Well, for whatever reason, when asked about a newspaper report that he might take the Minnesota Gophers head coach job, Tony Dungy replied that you can tell the reporter that reported that to focus on Marc Trestman. Sounded like an endorsement.
Marc Trestman was part of the 4-headed, in-fighting disaster that was our offensive coordinator in 2004. The job that Joel Collier walked away from three months after accepting it. Trestman also said privately that Sage Rosenfels was our best QB on the roster before the season. Take from that what you will.
When I first read this thread, I rolled my eyes and was like, "yea right...whatever", but I was just reading an article on coaching trees and stumbled on to something I never knew before... Marv Levy, Hall of Fame Coach who led the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances...he was a head coach of Montreal in the CFL before being hired in Kansas City in 1978 and subsequently moving to Buffalo. Perhaps this isn't such a completely silly idea afterall.
Levy was also a Rhodes scholar. Bud Grant was a hugely successful CFL coach for 8 yrs before going to the Vikings as well.
OK.....heres a question from those that know about these things. Which coach available....fits this description: Coach (fill in the blank) could sit down and beat Bill Belichick at a game of Chess (by using Chess...I mean could outfox Bill B when it comes to X's and O's on the football field). A coach that could actually win a few games just because of his gameplanning abilities...
As much as I love Dana, you have to wonder how he adapts to the NFL coaching lifestyle. He's kind of a party animal and isn't exactly known for being the type of coach who gets up at 5am and watches film. He has a not before 9 o'clock am policy lol.
If anyone knew the answer to that question, then they'd already have a HC job. But in reality the head coach isn't spending much time on Xs and Os as we like to think. Mike Tomlin is a good example of a head coach that doesn't really deal with the Xs and Os very much, but still is a great coach.
Great..so your the perfect person for this... Who might fill that description even remotely? There has to be someone out there. I keep coming back to the fact that in my mind...the one guy who would have evened the playing field out as far as our coach against Bill B, was Nick Saban. That guy just knew football. I really think his wife had as much to do with him leaving as anything. Ill tell you this...and Ill get crucified for saying it....but I take him back as head coach in a heartbeat....if you could someone make it impossible for him to leave his contract.
I'd take him back too man. Guy can flat out coach and a lot of the stuff Belichick gets is from him. But he's an extreme micro-manager. He likes to control players lives and that stuff to Saban's level doesn't fly in the NFL. As for someone who can take him out, I have no clue. I really don't. The only guy that comes to my mind, in terms of Xs and Os, is the one roaming the Jets sideline right now.
In the NFL they are. I've heard it suggested before that's why Jim Fassel might be considered persona non grata.
Actually I haven't. Probably should have and was going to when he was rumoured with the Hurricanes, but never got around to it. If his name pops up in the off-season with Miami, I will.
Oh ok. I could swear I'd heard you talk about him before, or maybe cite one of his coaching strategies, link to a picture of his play concepts, something like that.
I may have, don't recall, but I haven't truly sat down and figured out what he has done with his offenses lately.
The Allouettes play a mistake free brand of football, typically they do not have the best athletes on the field, but rely on their Qb to be the field general and make proper decisions. Usually in the CFL it is straight up Athlete vs Athlete, the Al's usually have a NFL style game plan meaning they identify an opponents' weakness and attack it continuously. In the CFL typically an offense is "run sloppy route, really fast, ball will be there", not the Al's. They remind me of the Walsh 49ers, they just execute really well game after game. http://watch.tsn.ca/cfl-games-on-demand/#clip540751 CFL makes all of their games available via archive, the TiCats are more like an NFL team and Winnepeg is GM'd by former NFL scout Joe Mack and they go more for NFL prospects who flamed out for one reason or another. For example, they added Quinton Davies who is larger then the usual CFL prototype DE
