OK, here's the deal. Up until our final drive, Henne was 19/25, 255, yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, and a 121.25 QBR..... (and this is despite being sacked 4 times in the 2nd half to go along with 2 forced scrambles and 1 holding call).

If, hypothetically, Chad completes 2 passes in a row for 14 yards, we call a timeout, and win it with a 50 yard FG (even though Carpenter had missed 3 of his previous 7 FGs), how would you have rated Henne's performance?

It would have been a good performance. But it didn't happen, so what's the difference?

Henne played a good game but those sacks you keep mentioning. Some of those are on him...

On one sack he put his head down and ran right into the arms of the defensive lineman. I made a joke to my wife that it looked like Henne wanted the guy to give him a hug. I'll give him props for improving his speed but he'll never be agile. On one play early he ran but still looked down the field and made the completion. That was positive. After that he started putting his head down again when he was running. The problem for him is that to have a shot at outrunning pursuing linemen he has to go full throttle. He's just not athletic enough to run very fast while still in a position to make a pass. I give him credit for trying though.

Ryan Mallet would have won the game with TD pass.

    LOL

Serious, we should be rated higher, but a few people still wouldnt believe and would have come up with some kind if excuse.

I think the guy played fast and accurate throughout the game , under serious pressure..Its kinda like the brandon Marshall argument, most folks are willing to accept some very critical drops because of the production he is supplying during the rest of the game..There seems to be a double standard at the QB position..

The play call to gates was not his fault I don't believe, either way, like you said, I thought he was playing the position sharply during the game and I'am not willing to discount that..

I'am really comfortable with him...defense, and oline is not helping this player, and we don't know if something is wrong in the locker room, and if the team is 100 percent committed to the goal...

Listen in a season where I don't know wtf is going on inside, Henne has been the only sure thing, I do know, and is progressing on pace...

    "Good"? Honestly? That's it?

21 for 27, 269 yards, 77%, 9.9 avg, 1 TD, 0 INTs, and a 120 QBR would only be considered "good" in the face of all the pressure he was under from Cleveland's Dline?

Good idea ToddPhins, I've got one for you as well.

    Rate Henne's performance if:

    1. Reggie Bush doesn't fumble. Twice.

    2. Sean Smith doesn't get schooled on a jump ball by a guy 5 inches shorter.

    3. Jimmy Smith doesn't mistime his jump.

    4. Gates doesn't run out of bounds on his fly pattern

    5. Carpenter doesn't miss the 51 yarder in the 2nd quarter. Because from what I'm reading elsewhere all we needed was a few yards to give him a chance and he'd have nailed it for the win. That assumption should have died with the 22/34 yd misses last week.

    6. Daboll goes back to plays/matchups that work.

    7. Columbo isn't allowing pressure on half of his pass pros. Not only is there heat off the edge, but the interior OL'men are allowing penetration up the middle so Henne can't step up. That makes it pretty hard to get into any kind of a rhythm.

Yeah, thats about "good" in today's NFL, especially when you consider a guy like Matt Hasselbeck had about a 120 QBR yesterday without any if's.

Those last four plays happened. I don't know how this is relevant to anything. It would have been great if he would have come through at the end but he didn't. It's part of his overall performance. That is it. Blame it on the defense, blame it on the coordinator, blame it on the line, blame it on the rain, it is what it is.

For rooks, Daniel Thomas and Mike Pouncey have been impressive as well. I'm still waiting on Clay to get some legit playing time. And a toss sweep to Bush & reverse/fake reverse to Gates has to lie somewhere in the future.

If it only led to one TD, yeah. Ben Roethlisberger and others play behind suspect lines too, yet manage to make plays.

I don't know what you or the other Henne believers want. In the face of an 0-3 start, with his offense scoring barely 18 PPG, do you want to hear that he's some kind of pro bowler? The guy is an average QB, nothing more. He got the new offense you wanted and he's gone from horrible to mediocre. It's improvement, but it ain't much.

And you simply can't erase the bad plays and say wel, if X Y and Z don't happen he had a great day. He had the day he had.

I don't know why you feel the need to defend this guy like he's your first born. I mean, even at best, the guy is just "good". Hardly seems worth the time to me, but whatever floats your boat.

Henne is a great QB until we get in the redzone. It seems like the whole offense is lost when we get inside the 10 yard line

Exactly, he DIDN'T have any ifs. He didn't need any b/c his kicker didn't miss a FG against a Denver team that Tennessee's defense held to 14 pts and 231 yards.

If Miami held Cleveland to 14 pts, Henne still has a 121 QBR and we win the game w/o needing last second heroics yet again.

Wait, are you downplaying Hasselbeck's performance b/c he's not a great QB even though he had an outstanding game? Or are you saying this b/c Denver has allowed opposing QBs a 106.8 QBR, so Matt's performance should be taken with a grain of salt? If you're saying the latter, then I should mention that Cleveland has allowed an 81.8 QBR (including Henne's 90) so it's not like their secondary has been a push over.

However none of this is the point of the thread. It's straight forward. How would you rate Henne's performance if we gained 14 yards on the final drive to get in FG range. It's not about comparing QBs; it's just about how we'd assess this one game.

Roethlisberger nearly gave a game away SINGLE HANDEDLY last night. Three first half TOs, one returned for a TD, 2 to setup scores vs a team w/ no prayer of moving the ball much less scoring. The Colts' only chance was to create TOs and Ben obliged them masterfully.

Lucky for him his DEFENSE made a play late in the game to bail him out.

And I guess you didn't see the 7 turnover massacre vs Baltimore in Week 1.

Other than that it was a good example.

Would you care to answer the question or not. There's actually a point to it.

Posters are saying, "well if Henne did such and such on the final drive". Ok, well if he hypothetically did the such and such you're demanding, then how would you have then rated his performance? It's only fair to ask.

I'm saying that its not fair to go back and do what ifs for anyone to mitigate for circumstances out of their control, unless you are willing to go back and do it for every QB in the NFL. With all due respect, I have a hard time believing you've gone through the performance of every QB in the league and picked out the instances in which someone around them failed them, or put them in a lesser position. If you have, then you would have to share all those hypotheticals for every QB, in order for us to accurately assess Henne's performance in relation to the league average for quarterbacks.

Yes, it has everything to do with comparing QBs. Your options for this poll include "average" and "good" etc. Those are based upon his performance in relation to others at his position. Chad Henne's value is in large part based on the performance of others at his position. If a QB has a 110 rating, but 20 QBs have a rating of 115, then 110 rating is below average. I'm not sure how else "average" should be viewed as.

I think people like me are objecting to the entire presence of this poll because it is impossible to carve out certain aspects of Henne's game. The great QBs win games in the clutch when they have to. They score TDs in the redzone. They convert critical 3rd downs. But you can't carve that stuff out.

Thus far, Henne has played like a competent QB who can't get it done when it matters. I don't care how he plays between the 20s. I don't care how he plays for the first 55 minutes. For him to elevate into a QB we can build our team around, he's gotta get it done WHEN IT MATTERS. Otherwise, he's just "a guy" at QB.

I don't know... I also didn't vote because, as big of a supporter that I've been, Chad is not cutting it when we need him the most. Time after time he has shown that he cannot put the team on his back and say "We're winning this; we will not lose this game". I mean, come on-Cleveland was begging for us to take the game. After two 15 yd penalties and a (finally) decent return from our speedster rookie, we needed one first down on a team that we were dominating all day. Three incompletes and a desperation INT?

I might have to retire my orange #7 jersey I bought after that brilliant Monday Night game against the jets.

You're making a logical argument but you're arguing against opinions that are based on emotions, disappointment, anger, resentment, hate, pride, etc. No amount of explaining is going to change anyone's mind.

If my relative dies in surgery, I'm blaming the Dr., period. I don't want to hear about how the anesthisiologist did this, or the nurse checked the wrong box, how my relative had a rare condition, or what the death rates for other surgeons with a similar talent/experience level are.

After a few weeks, or a few wins, people will calm down and take a more reasonable approach. WINS being the key term.

One play or one drive by a QB very often make the difference between winning and losing. Chad Henne isn't winning games and that's all that matters. Say whatever you want about the offense or the defense, he had a golden opportunity to win the game and blew it. Just like he'll blow his chance to be a starting NFL QB if the wins don't start coming.

I though we agreed no excuses in his 4th year? I should have known that was a pipe dream.

and the great ones are allowed to throw 4 picks in one game and three turnovers in one half?, I don't see how not being able to pick up 1 first down is worse than those scenarios..

The argument here is, is Henne fundamentally flawed when he gets in tight game situations?

One is a Hall of Famer who still kept his team in it by throwing four touchdowns.

The other is an average QB at best who couldn't get 14 yards to make it a 50 yard FG to win the game.

A first down puts us at the 37, for a 54-55 yd FG attempt by Dan Carpenter who has missed FGs of 51, 22 and 34 in the last two games. You guys are talking as if all we had to do was get a first down and then the refs would have stepped in and awarded us the game.

We've had a lot of at bats in close and we haven't capitalized, for a lot of different reasons and I'd rank QB error as way down on the list.
Maybe if we had a better rushing attack our red zone efficiency would improve. Maybe if our QB wasn't leading the team with 1 rushing TD. Marshall dropped an easy one last week, Henne misread his intentions on another opportunity. Columbo's poor pass pro blew up another chance. I haven't had a chance to go back and examine the red zone trips from yesterday (the Bush fumble speaks for itself), but I'm sure it was once again a team failure and not just one guy.

You are satisfied with Henne because he is playing conservative ball. What bothers me is that he isn't making anything happen for the offense.

You see a lack of "bad play". He's adequate!

I see an absence of "good play". He's not out there orchestrating this offense to score points and making big plays.

The argument is, the Dolphins keep losing and someone has to take the blame dadgummit!!!

I'll bet a case of beer that 90% of the guys trying to manufacture a scapegoat haven't gone back and studied the film to see what actually happened. We lose, we blame the QB, HC, OC, GM & Owner. Usually in that order. It's auto-scapegoating, the new rage in Miami.

Meanwhile, Mike "Teflon" Nolan's D has shat the bed 3 weeks straight but he gets a pass.

Didn't stop Cleveland when we needed a stop, needed the ball back when Ben Tate left tire marks on the D last week, and all they did in Week 1 was set a 40 yr old record for most passing yards allowed. Vontae Davis is cramping & has a bad hammy, Sean Smith is cramping, Dansby has a groin, Clemons has a hammy, Will Allen has a hammy, Yeremiah Bell is calling out the team's effort, Jason Taylor is calling out the team's practice habits. Basically, the defense is out of shape. They billed themselves as an elite unit, then came into the season cocky and not ready to play.

Lucky for them the fans haven't noticed yet.
