I can recall JJ's first season in 84 Bro, we went 7-5, same deal, you could tell the team was well coached and could do things, the Defense was terrible, think the Flutie throw to Phalen, and a Terp Rb name of Badnjarak or something, little bowling ball Rb who just killed us.

The fellas looked like the knew what they were doing on the field, they also looked gassed on that first drive, conditioning issue or just the uptempo caught them napping.

Btw, this isn't a 10 win team even without suspensions. We're rather mediocre.

It'll be a process for sure. I don't expect them to win a lot this year, but I expect them to still be better because of Al Golden and his staff. I watched those guys at Temple when I was watching a couple of their prospects and grew to really respect them.

I dunno, I think the team looks more "put together" if you will then under shannon. Just my two cents.

It will have an impact, but not as much as any of us would like. One offseason can't fix years of terrible coaching, resulting in this being one of the most undisciplined teams in football. One recruiting class won't fix the god awful embarrassment known as our depth, that Randy Shannon left us, most notably in the secondary, which may be the worst in the nation. This team is 2-3 years away from competing, and losing scholarships will hurt a lot. Al Golden, good luck at Penn State or wherever.

The Golden Era has just started, not a bad start to this season and I can say it can get a lot better from here. Go Canes. Can't wait to see what the team looks like when we get Spence/Benjamin back. Alan Hurns is a burner, Miller was having a beastly night. Encouraging on some levels, discouraging for the LBers.

That 84 team wasn't hampered by a decade of bad coaching and recruiting either.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that. The '08 class screwed everything over.

And Golden is a young coach without a shiny resume yet. I can def see him staying here coaching up his recruits into an elite power (hopefully).

Had Kosar, and used to piss me off to no end, they could score points in bunches but the D, even with a young Jerome Brown was just bad.

R&R may be overreacting a little but he does have a point.
If a U. of Miami team can't take a team like Maryland with some starters out then lets be realistic.
    This program is NOT back.
As he said, with some sanctions coming, it's going to be awhile before this train can get back on track.
    Quite possibly a long while.
Pretty sad to continue to see this program mired in mediocrity.

The hope you can look to is that Golden has just started and I assume they are just getting their systems installed and such.
You also have to consider just how much of a distraction to this team all the trouble surrounding the program has been.

No one is arguing this. I don't think any Canes fan here predicted a great season. Losing the first game under a new coaching staff isn't something to get all up and arms about. It's not like they lost to non-AQ team.

Not really, but it's true. Nobody told him about the Shapiro investigation, and now he has to take over a team that's already 2-3 years away, and has to bring this team back to glory without the full 85 scholarships? If Al Golden does stay, which isn't likely, he better not give a **** what anybody thinks, and decide not to renew a hell of a lot of scholarships. We need a full rebuild, and a good start would be to get rid of a lot of these Shannon recruits who aren't worth a damn on a football field, and use those scholarships on his own players.

    No argument.

However, Padre, if a program like U. of Miami is as strong as you'd expect a program like U Miami to be, it wouldn't matter who is coaching Maryland.
Maryland is not a top program. Never has been.
Yet here we are trying to come up with excuses.
Bottom line is that Edsel in his first year has managed to do more with Maryland than Al Golden has been able to do with the U. of Miami.
Starters missing or not, if this Miami program was back we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I didn't at all expect a great season.
Didn't expect wins against top of conference caliber teams.

I did however expect Miami would stop losing to mid level AQ programs.

Not to mention they lost to a mid level AQ program with a new coaching staff just like Miami.
    Just sayin.

I get people not wanting to give up on the program but come on...... are any of you really going to say that losing to Maryland is not a dissapointment for this team? I find it hard to believe any Cane fan would say that.

I think most Canes fans know he was not informed about Shapiros bullcrap. BUT Al Golden did not look like a great coach tonight either.

He will be here for the season, and if he leaves so be it. The program will not die because of him leaving or the punishment thats coming.

They've been a mid level AQ team for the past few years. Sad, but true. And many players from those underachieving teams are still there. It's gonna take time.

We lost to a better team. Losing to Maryland is a disappointment in 2001, not in 2011 after a decade of Coker and Shannon. It's to be expected at this point. People need to stop living in the past.

If it wasn't a dissapointment you wouldn't be having a melt down tonight.

As long as the Miami program stays in this funk it's a dissapointment and should be.
A program like this should never accept being a mid level AQ program.

Not sure how you're supposed to look like a good coach when you have 5 players suspended on defense, who just so happen to be the 5 best players on your defense. Not sure how you're supposed to look like a good coach when you've had one offseason to work with one of the worst coached teams in division 1 football. One of the worst disciplined, conditioned teams in division 1 football. Not sure how you're supposed to look like a good coach, when you have some of the worst depth in division 1 football. A team full of undisciplined, don't give a ****, self-entitled, useless ****s.

This team needs a full rebuild, and if it was up to me, at least 30 players would lose their scholarship after the season.

I'm having a meltdown because of how bad of shape Randy Shannon left this team. I'm not disappointed because I knew, and I would of hoped most Cane fans would have as well, that this was not a very good team, and won't be for another 2-3 years when Golden can get some actual football players in here, and not the undisciplined, don't give a ****, self-entitled, useless ****s I mentioned in my last post.

The defense was terrible, but is it because of the coaching, or Randy Shannon's god awful DB recruiting, and the complete lack of depth on defense in general, that are forced to play because of suspensions. Not to mention at least 4 true freshman getting good PT on defense. Golden and D'Onofrio had top 25 defenses the last 2 years at temple IIRC.

Totally and 100 percent disagree with you! There were 5 defensive STARTERS out for this game! The penalties and two delay of games IN A ROW are coaching.

Its not nearly as bad as you make it out to be though

And Maryland may not be a top program, but they did more than Miami (FL) last year too.

    The suspensions buried the team.

If they didn't have those guys out...THEY WIN. PERIOD.

Oh and Padre...the 1984 team was 8-5. But was ranked #6 before they blew a 31-0 lead vs. Maryland, before the last game of the season, when they then lost to BC in the Flutie game. They then lost in the Fiesta Bowl to UCLA. SO that team was 8-2 and ranked #6 when they fell apart.

There is ZERO comparison to this team.

This team lacks depth in the secondary, while having some depth at WR, and LB's. The defensive line is also paper thin. The TE's are a terrible group.

Having said that..they are what they are...a 8 to 9 win team at best. It looks as if they will not compete for a ACC title again this year, and that is depressing to all hell.

And idk what their deal is with recruiting TEs. Aside from Jimmy Graham, they've had no one at that position since Olsen was here.

And here I thought Randy's DB recruiting was the absolute worse, I forgot all about TE... Now that I think of it, his LB recruiting was god awful as well. Futch was terrible last night and Gaines wasn't much better. Buchanon made a few plays, most notably back to back plays on bubble screens, but then got completely owned by O'Brien, pulling a Channing Crowder and allowing him to run right by him in the backfield. This team is a flat out mess. Would be nice to have another 10 or so of Shantards recruits transfer. Or just release them from their scholarships. Guys like Marcus Robinson and Chase Ford don't belong on this football team. Watching Marcus Robinson jog after QB's, ****ing disgusting. Chase Ford looked like he never played the game of football before out there.

I couldn't disagree more with this season not being worth a crap. We need to show recruits we're turning the corner. As for Morris, I think we all know what he has. Henneitis. Terrible decisions. Stares down his receivers. Late throws. Thinks he can use his arm strength to get away with a lot of it. He's not the future. Ryan Williams, and eventually Preston Dewey are. Harris looked better in the offseason, and that's why Golden was so quick to name him starter.
