He did his damage against the first team last night. Raheem's group gameplanned and treated this like a regular season game during the week. They were missing Aquib Talib, that's it.
Definitely a step in the right direction. TD/INT ratio stands at 1. IMO, if he can get that on the right side of 1.00 this season, we have a real shot at the playoffs.
They're not scheming much because theyve run a lot of spread. You have to take the good with the bad. You can't expect to block with 5 and not see the protection look worse than it did when you keep 6 or 7 in. Almost every team that is running 3+ WRs regularly is going to have protection issues at some point.
I agree but we can not pin the 10 point on Henne against Tampa. He put the team in position to succeed. The offensive line could not get us a yard resulting in a field goal and Marshall fumbled another scoring chance. I'd argue Henne had us in position to put 17-21 on the board but other players on offense left the points on the field. I like what I see out of him right now....but it is only preseason.
And we took advantage of them missing a top corner, I loved it. How many times in the past has it felt like we have not been able to feast on advantageous match ups? Chad saw it, trusted it and his playmaker and got rid of it.
I'm not worried about the protection issues to be honest. When it has broken down it is because of the reason you mentioned, we have less blockers then blitzers. That creates chances to make plays and we've made some. Those little dump offs to Bush are worth 10-12 yards almost everytime it seems. That said, I am concerned about the run blocking. Last night it looked pretty awful.
Absolutely true. Anybody who is assuming that the only reason that Henne is doing well is b/c he must have faced lesser competition than the other QBs in the league then they should have enough self-awareness to realize they're not being objective.
Everybody's seeing 1st string defenses mixed with second stringers. I watched Brady & Detroit, and I can tell you you're wrong. Detroit's entire 1st string defense was not playing, yet Brady struggled. You think Henne, for some odd reason, is the ONLY QB to not play nothing but 1st stringers?
I am very excited! Might we actually have a QB this season?!? I'm not going to annoint anyone off a preseason game... but it is a very exciting proposition! I was hoping that the performance would create some more optimism around the board... but we've seemed to latch onto the OL (which has looked poor). Oh well. I dont care. You are going to win more games with good QB play and poor OL play than you will with with poor QB play and good OL play. So if we get some good QB play... this season will be very exciting!
Dont forget the 1st down completion deep in our own end in the 2nd half that was brought back thanks to an Oline penalty that, IIRC, ended up in like 3rd & 52.
Very true, UT. Not to mention, during the regular season there will be defensive injuries & substitutions, so it's not like Henne (or any QB for that matter) will ALWAYS be facing nothing but 1st stringers. Hopefully the past 2 games are a sign that this trust and chemistry between Chad and Brandon will exist during the regular season to where we see them constantly looking for and exploiting mismatches. Are people going to complain during the regular season if Henne & Brandon light up a 2nd string DB b/c the first stringer sits out a game, a quarter, a series?
I wonder if Daboll's offense will utilize Jake's run blocking ability better than senile Henning did.
I think it will be the offensive line and secondary and tightends that could hold us back and i still hope we will add a wr that can scare oponenst to compliment Marshall because I dont feel that Hartline will be a good threat for us ,yet I hope I am wrong but who knows.
hartline was open deep on every game except last night, he is constantly making plays down the field and if not he has a very high rate of getting PI calls, have you actually watched him play ? because based on your post it does not look like it
You can't say that we would've only scored 10 when you don't know how the rest of the 2nd half would've played out.
My prognosis would be the same but I agree with you in that if he does not get it done in preseason its less likely he can do it in regular season. I think Henne played well last night. Its the first game I watched this year and I liked his performance. I'm not doing backflips or busting out poms poms quite so fast, I want to see him do things like drive the offense down the field on his arm and his reads to put the final nail in the coffin and bring us home a "W". When he is creating opprotunities for us to win then I'll say he should be resigned. Not to be nit picky but he did miss plays last night, like when bess had seperation in the endzone he scrambled. I would of preferred him to give Bess a shot at the TD. But in his defense he is getting better with that kind of stuff.
I don't recall exactly, but didn't CK post something about how the really good QBs post +90 QBRs in the preseason? I'm not trying to call anyone out here. I honestly don't remember or know if I have the specifics right. I just thought that was one of the arguments as to why we shouldn't expect Henne to improve. If so it would be relevant as Henne's passer rating is now above 90.
IIRC it was QB's who are below 90 won't be good. There were good and bad QBs who had 90+ in preseason, but if you had a below 90 rating you had very slim chances of having a significantly higher rating during the regular season.
Actually the line was a career 85 QB Rating in preseason. Someone suggested we name the line for someone that straddles it, might have settled on Trent Edwards. I forget. But either way, you've got the gist of it. If you're below 85 for a career in preseason (with rookie years thrown out), the chances of you actually being a franchise QB look pretty small based on the sample pool. However, just performing well in preseason doesn't mean your chances are great of being a franchise QB, because there seem to be a lot of guys like Drew Stanton, Tarvaris Jackson, etc...that consistently kill the preseason but just don't put it together in the regular season the same way and aren't known as great QBs. How I applied it to Henne was, I said I needed to see him cross that threshold of no longer being a bad preseason performer before I'll even start to believe he COULD be turning the corner. He did that. He could be turning the corner.
I think it's very simple. He's improved his mobility, is a bit more accurate, better as far as his awareness goes, and perhaps a little more in tune with his best WR. The biggest difference for Henne is that they're running formations that he's comfortable with and they're calling the game with the same aggressiveness regardless of the score. That's helped him produce big numbers. He's not a great QB but he can be a very good system QB.
I've been highly critical of Henne but I think just by subtracting Henning he will be better. But I hope that this isn't all countered by this oline. Once defenses figure out the oline we're toast if we don't get better At the end of the day, it's still preseason. I think the correlation between preseason and post season is very low.
I don't think we're that bad on the OL if we just get the issues right and the right players in the right spots. Anyone know of a team by the way that pulls to the left? Is there anything wrong with doing so if your left side has two very strong maulers that can hold their position?
You left out: Now has an OC that doesnt yell "yabba dabba doo" when he calls a play and doesn't beat his chest with a club when the play goes wrong. Glad to see Brian Daboll calling plays and having the offense resemble something that looks like an NFL offense
So true! Those haters will nitpick the small stuff just to try to prove something. I doubt they will give any credit no matter what Henne does. It's s shame too!
He's been mobile and relatively more decisive. They cut him loose, and it's fun to watch him sling the ball around in a spread offense and without the 3nd and long playaction. That said, it's the preseason. We'll see if he's the same winrar during the regular season.
I agree, but wanted to give some credit as well. Losing Henning was a plus, but the addition of Daboll has helped just as much. He's actually looking like a good offensive coordinator. Even as we struggled at Atlanta, I was liking what I saw from that perspective.
He seems to actually get good usage out of his best receiving options. He reminds me a little of Gailey and Linehan in that regard. By the way it could be that this TB game as far as the OL goes was somewhat of a test to see how Miami would handle a defensive line if they went with a power approach on the inside. It failed horribly. The Carolina game used far more advanced blocking, but it showed just how immobile the two guards are. They're in a predicament if they don't fix their approach.
