I was just curious if I was the only one or not, So any FF/EMTs chime in with which Dept you belong to.

    Sure

I had just never seen anyone here or at FH talk about being a FF and thought I can't be the only one, so I figured I would have a look see if anyone else is.

I'm not, but my son is a firefighter/paramedic. He's a sargeant in Fairburn, GA.
I'm very partial to FF's and any of our safety workers. Their all my heros, ESPECIALLY my son.

Currently taking a Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) certification course here at the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care in addition to regular classes. Hopefully, I can get to work soon after I graduate and in between applying to med school.

Thanks! I hope I can get into UCLA's EMT program once I pass the certification test. It'd be great to get a head-start in saving lives while I wait for medical school decisions and maybe I'd even get to work alongside future admissions officers/instructors in addition.

My son is always going to different classes to up-date his skills. I don't think any one knows just how hard our FF/paramedics work. He loves the firefighting much more than riding the ambulance.

Good luck with your classes:up:. I just finished with the class room work for the NREMT-B I have the practical test in about oh... an hour. Not sure how you class is set up but ours is a little over 180 hours, and has been on of the toughest things I have done in my 25 years in the fire dept.

And dolphindebby you should be very proud of your son. IMO anyone who chooses to pursue FF/EMT are a special breed no matter if they are career or volly.

My wife was an on-call FF here in FL for about 4 years. She was going for FF2 when some personal issues w/ some of the guys at the station came up, so she decided to move and change professions. Got some other family/friends that are in/have been in both professions, but not me personally.

 Sorry Duck, that's about as close as I get... Mad respect tho, mad respect.

The one I'm taking is on weeknights 4 hours every weekend and one weeknight for the whole quarter. Yea, it's a very tough class and a lot of people don't realize the amount of work one has to go through. Good luck on the practical.

    Agreed 100%.

I passed my practicals! Now I have to take the written NREMT exam and I will be finished. If it is close to the written final exam for the class then I should do fine with it. The practicals was very nerve wracking!

The fire dept in your area paid or volly? Either way stop by the station and talk to the guys. If it is Paid then find out where to get an application and what you need in terms of education and what is required as far as the physical fitness. And in our area at least if you want to join (Volly dept. there is only 1 paid dept. in Delaware) they should have a application. Like I said either way stop by and talk to the guys. Good luck, and I hope that you do make it. And one more piece of advice, don't get frustrated if you do not get hired the 1st time, some of the paid guys I have talked to over the years said it may take 2 - 3 times to get on.

I guess you could say I'm more than proud of him. He's worked so hard to get where he is. He's received some commendations also. I really worry about him some times, but I usuaully just say a prayer for him and his buddies. He's also become a deacon at our church. I'm very proud and blessed by that.

Grew up around it, my dad is a fireman and a fire Marshall. In fact I stopped the line of firefighters in the family. My dad is not happy about that, but its seems my 17 year-old son may start up the tradition again.
