I assume he'll be cut?? Doesn't that free up even more cap space? Not sure how that works. They must be planning to use it...? Potentially for O'Hara, Kevin Boss, Edwards, Ricky, Ronnie?? Hmm..

Here is another source's info on Vernon's contract.

    Contract: 6 yr(s) / $42,000,000
    End Year: 2014
    Free Agent: 2015 / Unrestricted

    $15 million guaranteed
    Signing Bonus: $12 million

    2009: 800,000
    2010: 5,840,000
    2011: 5,840,000
    2012: 5,840,000
    2013: 5,840,000
    2014: 5,840,000

The figures year to year fluctuate depending on where you get the info. I don;t know if this is accurate, or if they were lazy and just divided the overall salary by 5 years from 2010-2014 assuming it stays consistent when maybe it doesn't.

If it did happen then perhaps Murtha gets first crack. I just can't see Columbo being anything but a huge liability in pass protection. People complain now about Carey's lapses....boy wait till they see Columbo...Carey will become a god in their eyes ;p

that is still workable if they have to bonus him and take a larger cap hit next year in order to give yourself some time to replace him.

dumping him for a absolute turd in Colombo is a NO GO.

Paul, I don;t think it's a cost cutting measure for this year.

First of all, Vernon has not even been cut yet. lol. He may just have the night off. For real.

But if he leaves, it is more likely related to declining performance. That would not explain Columbo as a replacement, though. his performance has declined worse than Carey's.

I'll wait until we hear that he's cut before I believe he might be cut.

There are 90 guys in camp. And once in awhile people can't come to work for personal reasons. Plus it sounds like it was requested, not decreed.

but it doesn't apply to what was already given.

I think his contract is bad in today's context, but it wasn't before.

Clearly a few things make it more noteworthy than usual:

    1) The timing of the Columbo signing

    2) A shorter install period on a new offense with a new OC makes it surprising any player would want to miss a practice.

    3) With two-a-days finished thanks to the new CBA, I think there will be fewer overall field practices to learn the offense and prepare for the season. Makes it harder to just skip one voluntarily, I'd think.

And I wonder if Ireland isn't getting rid of some of the player contracts that aren't 'healthy' in terms of production-to-dollar-amounts in this new CBA atmosphere.

Things is, I get the sense veteran FA's will cost MORE in the future and draft picks will be where the bargains are for production-to-dollars rations. So I don;t know why anyone would let blood unless it was mainly a performance or health issue.

Last explanation... they will overpay Orton and are readying the money to do so.

Well all that matters is what its like moving foward from today. Its value pre-CBA has no merit at this point...

I realize many like to call it messing with to OL. The fact is that last year Smiley played in 5 games and neither Thomas or Grove sniffed the field. I don't call that messing with the OL, I call it survival of the fittest.

And for the record, I consider being Crowdered a good thing for the team. Burnett is an obvious upgrade to Channing and Dobbins.

Or he could have food poisoning.

Or a death in the family.

Or any number of things that would make someone call into work.

If they ordered him sent home, it'd be because he was about to be traded. Not cut. They just cut guys.

I just don't believe it's anything more than that. I know there are rumblings, but I expect him to be back at practice on Wednesday.

8/4 is "cap clearing day" meaning all of the paid bonuses can be amortized by 8/4 and come off of the books, no harm, no foul.

    Different Tack..
Long is on PUP... We just signed Columbo.. Is it possible that Sporano wants to rest Carey and get as much work for Columbo if Jake needs more than four-five weeks to get back to battery. The logical thing at that point could be (to Sporano) to start Carey at LT and Columbo at RT. Just a SWAG, but never can tell.

Yeah, which also means he had to work harder, all of the time, to maintain his edge, and he simply did not take it seriously enough to do so...practice...we talkin'..practice?

    Indeed, practice...

Why? Their current market value is their current market value. Why not cut Carey this year, so next year you can spend $5M on someone with a more favorable contract?

Wade is still in the league and turned out to be a pretty good guard. They always get better after Miami cuts them loose prematurely.

If we start Colombo, it means our coaches secretly hate Henne and want him to fail, and get beat to ratsh!t in the process.

I don't think Colombo could beat out Nate Garner as a starter if the Dolphins wanted to put Garner there. I'd be very happy with Garner there and we'd save several million in salary cap with Carey cut.

I think the problem with trading Carey is that he's got a hefty cap hit.

It's not just the salary but there is a bigger hit b/c of the bonus money. I've read that he's got a $5.8 million hit this year (though salary only in the $4.1 M range).

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap-hit/

Of course, this could all be coincidence (a few days ago all the league pundits virtually had Orton in a Dolphins uni).

Took him a lot of years though....and I still wouldn't want to see him at LT still. I still have nightmares of that Indy game.

I think 4 years of nothing was a long enough time to give him.

I could understand cutting Carey BEFORE they made a cluster**** of impotent moves. Now, they need all the help they can get, and cutting Carey in place of Colombo or even Garner will just speed their way toward Andrew Luck.

Maybe thats the plan CK? lol. Ross's flirtation with Harbaugh last year was really all a reconnaissance mission on Luck. After those meetings... strict orders came down from above declaring the #suckforluck, lol

CK, I know you have disagreed with some of their choices this offseason, but do you feel they've made us a worse team? Or just not making adaquate improvements?

If they cut Carey, I absoultely feel that would weaken our team. But if Carey is retained, and it is indeed just a day off or hes re-doing his deal... do you think we are a worse team today than the one that finished the season last year?

It'll be a cold day in hell before I believe a football coach is intentionally sucking for draft position before a season even begins. They're not wired that way.

And yes I believe Miami is a worse team in 2011 than 2010.

How? Personally I don't see how that's possible considering we have virtually the exact same team, with many more talented players ascending than descending, while upgrading weaknesses at RB, WR, interior OLine, TE, and ILB.

You might not like Henne, but it's nearly impossible he wont be an improved QB over last year's injury-plagued, melt down season (including his own knee)...... and with a better OC to boot.

Was kidding CK about the order from above to tank the season. lol

But how did we get worse?!? We have practically the same roster. Still have a ton of youth, except with another year of experience under their belts. We essentially added two 1st round picks, and upgraded at MLB over Crowder.

Where did we get worse? Only position I could think of could be RB, but they underachieved anyway last year...
