You have valid points with the price tag, but I think the age thing doesn't apply yet.
My argument is more about---- we currently have no proven depth at WR, and if Marshall or Hartline go down we could be in trouble again. It's uncertain how long Gates will take to make an impact, and until he does, I think it would be wise to have someone else in the mix who certainly can.

IMO Hartline is a possession guy. He might have a slightly higher yards per catch, but he's still a possession guy. He might sneak by a DB here and there, but he's not the first guy you're picking to enter a jump ball contest..... or a tracking the ball contest...... or a down field catching contest. He's not a scorer, and he's not a playmaker.... and that's what we're missing. I'd rather go after Edwards than bank on Gates contributing early on.

The Jets made the Champ game with him so I wouldn't say he's detrimental to success.

Not to mention, if we're looking at the big picture and planning ahead:

we face the Eagles, so we'll need all the help at WR we can get for that game.

We face Revis twice. That alone should warrant us grabbing an extra WR. (That's 3 games against HOF caliber corners)

Houston picked up Joseph who's a stud when healthy. With the firepower of that offense, we might need more of our own.

    Cleveland has Haden.

NE has a ProBowler in McCourtney and could be nasty with Vince & Albert up front, so it'd be nice to have 2 big guys to throw jump balls to if they bring the pressure. Plus they drafted Dowling.

SD had one of the best pass defenses in the NFL (ranked #1 in yards allowed with a 76 QBR and led the league in fewest big play catches allowed. We might also need to match their firepower.

KC should be even better than 2010 where they allowed a stingy 78 QBR & 55% completions.

Giants allowed an 80 QBR with only 57% completions.

That's 10 games against some good cover guys or great secondaries that would really benefit IMO from another weapon at WR. Not to mention, if these teams decide to double Brandon and stick their stud corner on Hartline, that could spell trouble.

Plus the playoffs and Super Bowl could include teams from the 6 toughest pass defenses from 2010: Baltimore, Pitt, Jets, GB, Chicago, and SD.

MC, you know how we know Hartline is more than just slightly inferior to Edwards-----> if Hartline were a FA this year, we'd only have to compare the contracts that are offered to them.

The one thing Edwards has that we really don't have right now is the ability to get downfield. We have no true vertical players which Edwards is

    huh?

This is one of those instances where you don't need statistics to prove who makes more big plays..... but I'll play along anyways. lol.

    Here are a few numbers: 84, 58, 34, 23, 45, 34, 37, 78, 67, 24, 21, 45, 28, 65, 67, 41, 32, 74, 52, 80.
    And a few more: 0.

These are the TD catches of 20+ yards. Guess who has the top group?

Doing the math, that 140 points (including PATs) verses 0 points.

Yes, and when you actually use statistics that support your point, you might be able to prove it? lol

Miami has about $5 - $7 million left to spend on the salary cap. I would rather them spend it on a Safety, pass-catching TE or lock up some of our key players to contract extensions...Soliai or Wake for example.

His stats do support his point. You use stats on a frequent basis so what's the problem?

[I can't help but point out the irony here]

Yes, he makes plays that Brian Hartline "phsyically" could never dream of making. You could say the same of Jerry Rice. Its bizarre how good that guy was, despite not being big and strong. Unfortunately for Braylon Edwards, the job entails more than rebounding. There are things like route-running, reading a defense, technique, and intelligence are rather imperative.

Also, it would be prudent to mention that Braylon Edwards and his physical and athletic superiority had the most penalties of any WR in the NFL.

unless we pull a philly trick like they did with the nnamdi signing, i don´t see anything out there that suggests we even talking to this guy, i would love it if it happens, but i just don´t think we can afford him

But if we have Bess, Marshall, & Hartline (3 guys who excel in route running etc), then does it really matter if Edwards doesn't so that we can afford to use him in the area that he excels---> the long ball? especially since that's what we're lacking the most--> a guy for Henne to develop legitimate vertical rapport with?

I was really hoping we could sign Soliai to a long term deal and possibly even restructure Jake's deal if needed to give us extra room. It's not like Long's going anywhere.

No it's not. Henne can hit the long ball when he has a legit vertical threat...... and he did so for a year with Braylon at Michigan. Sooo there.

Wow. I never looked at it that way. I do now see everything for what it really is. I was never aware Chad Henne had success in college. This newfound information convinces me. Lets sign Braylon Edwards.

ETA: why didn't we just draft a QB that was successful in college in 2007, instead of John Beck? They really dropped the ball

do you have any kind of idea where we could be cap wise right now, i think maybe 4-5 M, so if we get soliia done that could give us another 6 Million maybe, 10 million would be nice, i guess we need to stay about 2-3 Million under for emergency and 7 million could get it done

During his senior year, Braylon didn't seem to have a problem catching 97 passes for 1330 yards & 15 TDs from Henne en route to being drafted #3 overall. Just sayin. They have a good history together, even if it was in college.

I've lost track after signing Barnett, McDaniel, and Bush. I think we were at $102 or $103 million before these guys signed. Still have to allocate a few mill for rookies. (Cant forget the money against future caps etc that can be borrowed this year.) So I'm inclined to believe we could get it done if we wanted to.

Yo D, how far can we go into the preseason to clear that space if we wanted to restructure?..I would think right up until the season started, like if we wanted someone really bad, and we needed the space, and we figured out that we want Paul long term, is there a deadline of sorts?

Most penalties? Do you have a link to support that?

To insinuate Edwards does not do these things or does them worse than Hartline, is a joke.
