Then many are wrong. Culpepper had his best season - and arguably one of the best single season performances in modern football history - when Randy Moss was hurt and missed five games. Culpepper's stats in that stretch: 9 TD, 3 INT, a 100 rating. Many people tend to overlook the fact that Culpepper performed at a first ballot HoF pace before he blew out his knee.
Any drafted Qb or Qb's drafted in rd #1 and a couple (but not all of them) drafted in rd #2? And if you look at your "non bust" Qb's I count 10, off hand, that were Top 5 picks (Sanchez went #5 or #6 not sure which one) Do you suppose we pick in the top 5 in 2012?
Cutler was traded because he chose to not take Pat Bowlen's phone calls or call Bowlen himself, at the request of the Broncos FO, in an attempt to clear the air and heal the wounds/bruised egos caused by Josh McDaniels entry as head coach and his pursuit of Matt Cassell. It was just too mucgh disrespect towards the Broncos owner and Bowlen wouldn't put up with it. On the surface of it, I would have kept Cutler- 4,000 yard passer at the age of what, 24 or 25?-but who knows the details. Orton was considered an integral part of the deal, but don't get the cart before the horse. Cutler's insolence was the driving force behind that deal. I think that Henne will make progress this year and will quiet down a lot of the local criticism of him. I think that Orton is good, but wouldn't necessarily be a big upgrade over Henne and he comes with two large opportunity costs- a salary of around $9 million/year and he'd cost a premium draft pick, most likely a 2-4. Not so sure he's worth all that. This is the same guy who almost undoubtedly will lose his starting job, if he remains in Denver, to Tim Tebow, the most dumped on player I've ever seen on this board. No arm. Can't be a NFL QB. Might make it as a TE. Might make it as a FB. Might make it as a H-Back. That Tim Tebow. And Orton has pretty much already lost his starting job to Tebow, ie the Broncos are trying to unload him and his bloated salary, and a lot of you are excited about this? Curious. I think that the guy who the Dolphins really wanted to become their QB is a guy who, unexpectedly, they just missed out on- Christian Ponder. I think that I would love to get Carson Palmer in a Dolphins uniform, but that probably won't be possible, if at all, until next year. I think that I would have liked Tyler Thigpen to stick around a bit longer. I think that I doubt Pat Devlin's arm on an NFL level. I think that Vince Young remains an intruguing option as a low cost, low risk free agent. The template is Michael Vick. Sometimes people mature, sometimes they don't. But 2 Pro Bowl appearences say that the guy can play QB.
If they wanted Ponder so bad then they should have made a trade an acquired him. It was possible to do if they thought that much of him. This organizations continued lack of respect for the importance of the QB position is positively baffling and will end up being their downfall
rather go 8-8 then 6-10 we went 7-9 last season. Orton will be an upgrade over Henne. Our running game will be better. Our defense should be better. I doubt we would only improve 1 game.
I like Ponder quite a bit, but drafting him at our slot is one thing, trading up from #16 to get him is another. I would have given up a 2nd to trade up for Gabbert, but then we encounter the problem of not having a 2nd this year. I can't fault the Dolphins FO for not trading up for Ponder- I had a sneaking suspicion about Minnesota at #12 but I think that we played it right- all conjecture on my part, of course.
Why? Both results are positively mediocre, except one gets you a pick in the top 10, the other in the 13-15 range. Could be the difference between Landry Jones/Matt Barkley or not getting a QB. If we're not going to the playoffs, give me a losing season.
St coverage units will be better as well, I'm under no delusions about what this team is, do think we are better then most fans give the roster credit for, do not think we are a SB team, at best we are a Divisional Round playoff team with a slim chance of the AFC title game. Those are both longshots though, the AFCE is just so tough that it is hard enough to pass the Jets let alone the pats.
Because Im a fan of football team and winning before I am a fan of the Draft. Teams that are good for long periods of time usually dont pick in the top 10. We can build a great franchise without doing that.
You guys are still making the argument about Henne? Geesh, I thought once we got rid of Dan Henning..."The Grinch Who Stole Winning"...and never set Chad Henne up for success, this would have been a moot topic.
I really think Jets will be a step back. I am worried about the Pats because of one reason, Tom Brady. They will be very good until hes gone from there.
Actually, they do. That's usually where they find franchise QBs. How exactly are we building this "great team" by doing what we're doing right now?
They also have a franchise qb, where you find most of the time in the top 10 of the draft. That's fine, enjoy your mediocrity and the 7-9 8-8 maybe 9-7 records and have another 20 year qb drought, your prerogative.
I really hate this attitude. I understand where you're coming from, and I know a lot of people will agree with you, but I vehemently disagree. I want to see my team IMPROVE every year.
It's not a cast iron mold... there's multiple ways to find franchise QBs. We could always trade up from that #15-16 range. Or who knows, maybe an Aaron Rodgers falls to us. You cannot predict the draft. Besides, with the amount of teams that invested a first round pick in a quarterback this year, I would imagine one would fall to us.
Don't get me wrong Garden, I want to see improvement. 8-8 is not improvement. Its treading water. 8-8 is useless. 8-8 is worse than useless. It's a mirage of improvement which means the status quo is likely to remain. It's year 4 for this crew. Get it done or be gone.
Maybe. Of course we could've drafted Rodgers ourselves. Enjoy 8-8 if that floats your boat. I'm not celebrating
Of couse not, but I have logic. I look at the talent level on this team and see a 3rd place team at best. I see we're playing the NFC East which has 3 pretty good teams. Pat Kirwan is fond of saying that if you're team has more than 3 "ifs" (Ex; if we get good QB play, if so and so returns from injury, etc.) then you're not going to be a good team. We have way more than 3 ifs.
Really? Eagles - 2000 - #6 Corey Simon - Vick was signed as a FA Patriots - 2001 - #6 Richard Seymour - Brady came in the 6th round the draft prior Steelers - 2000 - #8 Plaxico Burress - Prior to that 1989 - Drafted Big Ben #11 in 2004 Ravens - 2003 - #10 Terrell Suggs - Flacco came #16 overall in 2008 Colts - 1999 - #4 Edge James - Peyton Came prior draft #1 overall Top 5 franchises in the NFL. Only one has picked in the top 10 in the past 10 years. 3 of the 5s QBs were drafted outside of the top 10. The others QB came in Free Agency, albiet after McNabb, who was drafted in the top 5(1999 I believe?), left..the statement stands.
top 10 QBs based on rating last season........3 were selected in the top 10. Peyton, Vick and Rivers. Please dont tell me we cant win a championship without a top 10 QB.
Ok Pad. If we get good QB play, if we get a good running game (for a dime a dozen position we sure came up short last year), if we improve the speed on offense, if Daboll is in fact, not a moron, if the defense starts holding on to interceptions, then maybe we're a ten win team. I count 5 there.
which means what? we played better teams last season in the Steelers and Ravens. Our schedule was very tough last season and we won 7 games with bad QB play, injuries along the OL, bad running game, bad OC, missed opportunities and a bunch of 2nd year players on D. To say we cant win 10 games is a joke.
I think you proved my point. all those teams drafted high first round franchise QB's. Just because they then had one bad year sometime after that doesnt mean anything
You haven't even seen Gates run in shorts. Otherwise the speed has not improved at all. You haven't see Thomas even run in shorts yet either.
No, I didnt prove your point. I disproved your point and proved mine. We dont have to pick top 10 to get a franchise QB and the top franchises simply dont pick in the top 10 very often.
and you havent seen our next years top 10 player do anything in the pros either. but your ready to throw 5 wins down the drain for it. fun...
I don't get your argument: Eagles - Before Vick they had McNabb drafted 2nd overall who helped them get to elite team level Patriots - Brady is an anomaly Steelers - Only able to get Big Ben at 11 because Eli and Rivers went in Top 5 Ravens - Had to trade up for Flacco still. Colts - How exactly did they acquire Peyton without a top 5 pick. Look yeah there are other ways to get a franchise qb. But the best way percentage wise is to have a top pick or low enough pick to trade up for a top talent. Miami has traded for and drafted in the 2nd round vast qb's and failed. It's time for a change up.
This is true...and? Their current franchise QB came from FA. you dont have to go into the top 10 to get one. Of course he is. he was drafted outside of the top 10...sorry...your so right. LMAO. Ok, now you've got me here. Because there were other QBs in that draft, we should throw out this example..... to #16 yes...and your point being??????? Huh? If we go 8-8 next season and we still have no good QB play, then I agree! you take a QB in the first round! you trade up or do whatever you need to do to make sure you get a QB you believe is a franchise guy. But to simply say its better for the franchise to pick top 10 rather then 14 is simply wrong. and a joke.
