Here we are three years after that battle and the Beck ghost is threatening to haunt this Dolphins front office and coaching staff. Beck, you see, has somehow gone from being a bust that was cut by Miami to a backup in Baltimore, to a guy who might be the starter in Washington in 2011 -- assuming the season ever begins. Beck's rise in Washington has been bizarre in that he is apparently ahead of Donovan McNabb on the depth chart yet has not taken even one snap in a game during his time there. Folk in Washington are understandibly asking how it is Beck could make such a rise when he's had four years with little NFL success. Believe it or not, Beck's plausible explanation is that the Dolphins screwed him. But here's the thing: That doesn't bother anyone as long as John Beck is a backup. That doesn't bother anyone as long as he goes to Baltimore and then gets traded to the Redskins without fanfare. Miami's decision to cut ties with Beck is even deemed correct if he becomes the starter in Washington and is mediocre at best. But if he somehow continues his improbable climb from scrubino in Miami to scrubino in Baltimore to viable or outstanding starter in Washington, that makes Mike Shanahan look like a genius. And it makes the folks in Baltimore and the folks in Miami look, well, like they missed something. If Beck somehow blossoms in Washingto, fans here will probably wonder what the Redskins were able to do that the Dolphins weren't able to do, what strings they pulled, what techniques they adjusted that the Dolphins didn't. The Dolphins chose not to wait on Beck. They cut him loose. And he might get his opportunity in Washington. So Miami's quaterback evaluation might again be on the line. http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...my-breath-im-going-to-yell-from-the-high.html
No offense, but Heupel sucked. I saw him in training camp- no arm whatsoever. He shouldn't even have been drafted. Classic Wanny pick imo.
Not many times a 30 year old QB comes out of the ashes to make himself into a starting QB - good for him if he does it. However, when Pennington became available, Parcells & Ireland had to pull the trigger on it simply based on what we'd known about John Beck, Chad Henne, and Josh McCown at the time.
Interesting point, but I think that you have to factor in that Beck was around 26 when he entered the league- Mormon committments, et al. Imo that changes the dynamics of the age thing. It isn't like he's already languished around the league for a decade. I'm pulling for him.
Good for him if he gets the starting job there but really the preseason hasn't even started so who knows whether or not this is just nonsense put out there to cover up the poor handling of the McNabb experiment. There aren't too many teams that would draft a guy in the 2nd round then just keep him around for 4 years or so on the bench to give him a shot down the road. He didn't play well here, I wish him the best, he seemed like a decent guy, but his play here deservedly got him cut.
Didn't necessarily mean body-wise. He's been in the league what, 4 years, to my knowledge hasn't started a game since his time in Miami in 2007. What makes him suddenly "get it" all of the sudden? Kurt Warner is about the only guy I can think of that came into the NFL as an older prospect and really took off, but that still took a Trent Green injury and the "Greatest Show on Turf". More power to him if he is the starter.
When Beck plays and can handle a snap as a starting QB then we will know a little more. I think he will be a failure again.
That's kind of my point- he's only been in the league for 4 years. That's not all that bad for a QB in training. If it were 9 or 10 years- wouldn't look good.
I think fellas are smoking moldy green crack if they really think John Beck is going to somehow emerge in DC. Grossman=SB Qb Beck=not thrown pass in game in 4yrs I like a good Rocky story as much as the next guy, but come on, it is not as if Beck was toiling away in the CFL or UFL or AFL, they man hasn't played in this long for a reason.
Grossman got his chances and blew them. Beck hasn't gotten his chance yet, but will very soon. I'm pulling for beck, but who knows. It'll be more interesting to evaluate him at the end of this season- if there is one, of course.
TBH I just have the feeling that Shanny is blowing smoke up Beck's orifice trying to pump up his confidence, like Sparano did with Shawn Murphy a couple of yrs ago when he made him the "starting" RG for OTA's, but at the end of it Murph was waived. I like Beck, to me he would have been a perfect Qb for the Walsh 49er teams, #3 developmental guy in the WCO, but at the end of it all imho Shanny wants to see what Beck can do mentally if he is stroked and told he is the #1 guy and all of that stuff, as Beck's tools were fine, good arm, good feet, it was always above the neck with him.
You never know. But it spoke volumes that Shannahan passed on Gabbert and Ponder and instead traded down in the 1st round. There's no other real option at QB in Washington besides Beck, as far as I can recall.
Skins are in rebuilding mode jim1, they had to accumulate picks over certain players which is why they were selling cheaply so to speak imo.
The success or failure of Beck has no bearing on the conclusion that this franchise was a complete disaster when it comes to talent evaluation during the 00s.
I wish that cat success; he's a stand up guy. Shame he's already 30. Well, better late than never I guess.
