Here's a crazy question posed by a friend. Some are saying how potential QB picks in the draft are better than Henne. IF Henne were able to be drafted right now, as is, where would he be drafted compared to other available QB's?
Henne was already a hair’s breadth away from being a 3rd round pick in 2008. Now, he’d be lower. Probably in the 4-5 range. He’d just be one of the pack, a guy who was in position to do great things at a big school… and didn’t.
Henne would be the only guy in the draft capable of starting in Week 1. I doubt he'd make it out of the 1st round.
I do try to be fair and objective. I do not see any QB better in this year's draft. It's not because Henne has been great, it's because this year's draft at QB is not very good. Ask me the same if a Luck were available, and my opinion is like day and night.
Knowing what I know now?..I understand why the regime passed on him twice and did not bother moving up to get him in the late 2nd...Thats what I think some people get a bit twisted when projecting and commenting on Henne...This guy was a fall back option at best....He was there, we needed a young QB, he has a really nice arm, some good experience, so why not throw a late 2nd after him... We need to keep spending draft picks on QB's til we get it right.
I agree w/ you. Luck would've changed the whole draft. Now we have Gabbert and Newton being talked about as if they are elite prospects, Ponder a potential 1st round pick, Kaepernick and Mallett as possible game changers. I don't buy any of it. I don't see any of this year's QBs having success w/o a couple years of sitting, watching & developing under a good staff.
Riiiight. B/c we're the guy who's been married 10 times in 12 years and we keep blaming our exes instead of looking in the mirror. Pick a guy, design an offense around him, give him some talent and play makers to work with, a solid running game, etc, and he'll do just fine. If not, move on. But dont throw a guy into a situation where he's almost guaranteed to fail and then call him a failure when he fails to produce a miracle.
I would have to say most teams out there would eye Henne as mostly a backup type roll. If I were a GM I would go after best player available/team needs in the first 3 rounds. Outside of us and Seattle, most teams that need QBs have high draft picks in each round. Thats why I would have to say earliest I can see him being picked is in round 4 . Not much lower then that.
If anyone were to tell me right now that any QB, in this year's draft was better than Henne, I have to disagree. I am far from impressed from Gabbert, Newton, Mallet, Ponder, and the rest.
I couldn't agree more, although I would probably say there is more depth and potential in this QB class than any draft in recent memory. Are any of them ready to jump in and play right away? Probably not. Out of that list, Newton would probably have the most immediate success because of natural ability -- with Ponder being serviceable for a rookie. Honestly, people call me crazy when I say this, but out of all the QB's in this class I think Ben Chappell is the most NFL ready. The problem with him, though, is that he has an extremely low ceiling and nobody is trying to find an "average" QB when they draft-- it's home run or bust for most teams.
Look at the attached picture. Kid is the best overall QB in this draft. Not a great pocket presence due to the offense he ran but that can be taught. Pure passing ability wise ? IMO, the kid is going to be a winner in the NFL.. He is going to make a lot of the NFL media " experts " eat their words.
What?! He was given a 1st or borderline 1st-2nd round grade by virtually everyone. He had an impressive showing during Senior week with a lot of post season buzz (reminiscent of what Ponder did this year), and his arm was the QB talk of Combine IIRC, too (similarly to how Mallett's was). I recall a few analysts believing we we'd take him with our #32 pick and thought it was a steal that he was still there at 57. (TheHuddleReport being one of them). He had some needed areas of improvement just like every 1st-2nd round QB of this draft, so he'd fit in perfectly in that regard. If he came out this year, I'm inclined to believe he'd be right there in that mix with Ponder, Mallett, and Locker. Sanchez's year was no better than Henne's. Does that mean he's now a 4th rounder too? lol. Bradford's first year playing was similar to Henne's first year. Would Sam be a 3rd rounder this year? Gosh, this draft is MUCH stronger at QB than I imagined.
right...... b/c ripped linebackers always make the best QBs. I have a plant that's smarter than he is. The kid should be a firefighter. lol.
Bradford threw for almost 700 more yards and 6 more TDs then Hennes first ( actually 2nd) year in the NFL. Bradford probably wished he had people like Bess and Marshal becaue if he did, you could tack on another 6 or 7 TDs and it was done behind a healthy Oline that was worse then ours when ours was mostly being swapped around. Bradford was also a rookie thrown into the fire immediatley. Henn had a full season to settle into the NFL, BIG DIFFERENCE. BIG.
Come back and tell me that same thing in a few seasons. Nothing to do with him being ripped, its the picture I got up when I googled his name. He is the only one I saw at the combine that threw a long pass and the receivers did not have to stop, turn around or go back for it. When Locker let it go they all caught it on the dead run. Like I said, its my opinion. I am sure people felt the same about Brady, Montanna and others. In regards to your plant. Remember, you boy Henne only scored a 22 on the wonderlic, not much of a difference IMO.
Gm, he didn't start his rookie year, and had Chad Freakin Pennington as his personal mentor and film room coach for the past 3 years..I dont think thats as bad as situation as your making out to be.. Hennes got issues, mentally and physically, I hope he can overcome some of the mental ones.
Of course he had more yards. He had 100 more pass attempts and didn't miss a game. You realize he had more TDs because he had twice as many pass attempts in the redzone, right?...... and also because the Rams didn't sub in the WC or play for FGs. Marshall & Bess don't mean as much as you think when defenses focus on them b/c we offer little threat anywhere else. Nice of you to leave out the fact that defenses have to respect Steven Jackson----- Yeah, he doesn't make a difference. Sorry, their line was not worse than ours. No offense, but it's humorous how people try to turn a mediocre overall WR-TE unit into something special by using the "we have Brandon Marshall & Davone Bess" line. How about our horrendous depth? How about the fact that we used 6 different practice squad guys? And how about the injuries that caused us to only play 2 starting WRs during the last 6 games of the season? Surrrrre, that's meaningless. How about the overall mediocre ability out of the backfield? I guess it doesn't matter either about the OC who's "retired".
Not a chance would he be drafted in the first round. If we're talking about based on his 3 year body of work in the NFL being factored in no team would spend a first round pick on a guy who has had almost 2 entire seasons and thus far has not proven he's capable of being a quality starting QB in this league. When teams spend first round picks on QBs they are assuming that the player can eventually become a guy who can perform among the top half of starting QBs at least. Nothing Henne has done so far has hinted at that. I think Henne would be drafted somewhere in rounds 3 - 5 as a guy who teams could rely on to be an effective backup with some upside. I'm not saying that's Henne's destiny as a QB. But that's where GMs would project him based on his current body of work.
He is the only quarterback in the draft with experience throwing to Michigan AND Ohio State WRs. For that reason alone, he should be considered a hot commodity.
That is not a low opinion. Jason Campbell was traded for a 4th round pick. What has Henne done in the NFL to be 3 rounds better than Campbell?
AJ Feeley went for a 2nd rounder. So did Terrell Owens and Daunte Culpepper. Moss went for a 4th. None of this matters. Its funny to see the mental gymnastics you'll engage in in order to bash the guy.
None of those happened last year. Not real big mental gymnastics comparing a quarterback who is actually in a similar situation and a year apart. Bringing up Moss(who plays a different position and had mental issues), Owens(same), Culpepper(actually had success in the NFL until knee) and AJ Feeley(who was a 2nd the year after and a qb in a totally different sitution and was a few years ago) are meaningless. All they do is gum up the works. Plus why does any criticism of Henne have to be "bashing?" If Miami did try to get Henne I highly doubt they could get a 1st, they might get a 2nd, most likely get a 3rd or 4th round pick, could end up with a 5th.
He is part of the "I want Henne to succeed but I don't think he will" clan. On the fence so to speak.
If any player is a Dolphin I hope they succeed. I thought Jay Fielder was horrible, I still wanted him to succeed. I hated Thurman Thomas, I still wanted him to succeed as a Dolphin.
This isn't about my opinion of Henne. This is a realistic assessment of where Henne would be drafted based on his total body of work including his NFL performance. If you honestly believe he would be selected in the first round simply because he has NFL experience, the fact that you are a Henne fan is seriously clouding your judgement. Teams don't consider what a player might do. They consider what he will probably do. Most GMs wouldn't share your optimistic view of Henne at this point in time. Love it or hate it that's the way it is.
