a young player thinks he is a great player, say it ain't so, say it ain't so... Shut up NFL punditry, the man won a Heisman and National Title..twice. What should he say, "yeah I know I achieved the highest levels, but gosh, now I'm just not sure if I can hack it, so I just wanna be the best footballz playerz I can be" These draft pundits, and NFL Commentariat are such huge blowhards and nibbish wonks it makes me sick, let the kid speak, as "reporters" they should love the fact that he is saying confident things and not the usual "player speak". But ohh no, not these guys, anything that is not a thrilling discussion about presnap reads on a Cover 2 defense that has a tendency to blitz in 3rd and 4's on the opponents' side of the 35 yd line is verboten! Nonsense, morons, if they were halfway doing their jobs they'd also mention "of course Newton's statements have nothing at all to do with whether or not he can play NFL football" But oh no, not these gray men, they take the smallest statement and turn it into some commentary about the ability to play, this is one of the things that I hate about the pre draft period, the commentariat takes ANY non bland statement and magically impeaches the player. NoFunLeague indeed.
Is that an attack? Wait a minute, let me put on the "draft pundit hat" "Wow, cannot believe lmeister3 just said that, if he is saying that here, how will he handle crowd noise"?
Maybe it will cause him to drop a bit. Unfortunately this stuff isn't new. Remember the Dan Marino cocaine use rumors?
See, but that actually (probably) happened, with Newton there are no such allegations, he just made an off the cuff comment and now he is a immature dunce. That is such a huge pile of bull**** you almost have to wonder if he had smoked pot if he would have been better off then being nitpicked over nothing at all? It's as if the Commentators have decided: "we are going to hammer you, over a meaningless statement, and if you had not said that, we would have harped on something else"
Newton sounds like an idiot. He played one full season because he either wasn't good enough to start for his team (Florida) or he was running from legal trouble down in JC world. My prediction is that in 3-4 years nobody besides Aurburn fans and fans of whatever NFL team stupid enough to draft him will even remember him. He's more of a fad than an "icon".
A) perhaps, do not know what an "idiot" sounds like B) at least he still wanted to play football, he did not sit out a season that has far more weight when it comes to his football talent then anything he said. The same people who complain athletes are too bland, are the same ones who make big deals when athletes are not bland. If football were nuclear physics you may be right.
That is absurd. It's not like he was sitting behind any scrub in Florida, he was behind Tebow who many consider one of the best college football players of recent times.
So? Great college player doesn't always equate to great NFL player. If the "icon" Newton couldn't beat out Tebow, what makes him think he can beat out an NFL player? (I don't think Tebow will last long as an NFL QB)
Going by that logic, Joe Flacco should have been garbage, considering he couldn't beat out Tyler Palko.
See, I can understand why some would not like Newton the prospect, I find myself a bit dubious of him myself, however setting behind Tebow is not exactly sitting behind a scrubbini, it's not like it was Danny Wuerfel, so to me that is not a fair observation. Let it be said you can have whatever opinion you wish to have, not bashing that at all, just saying that seems unfair to hold it against Newton, Tebow won the Heisman and led UF to national title games and was not injured until Newton had left.
Crap like this, morons he was a legit star in College, should he lock himself into his dorm room and pretend the outside world does not exist? And notice, Albert Breer does not actually quote anyone, he just tosses out faceless speculation based on nothing at all..."major film and music stars..at Auburn"? Come on man, who, which "major stars" would bother to hang out at Auburn.
See, the meme continues, what does that have to do with whether or not Newton can play football in the NFL? What is worse, is Ken Somers is merely speculating, Whisenhunt never said any such thing, and since when is "bad quote" a Qb skill?
Saying he won a national title twice is a bit of a stretch. He had nothing to do with the Gators winning in 08, and winning a Junior College Championship is hardly on the same level as the BCS.
Yeah, but shouldn't the "icon" Newton have been able to beat him out? I mean, Newton did in one season what most college players can't do in four. At least according to him. Newton will not last long in the NFL.
Most college football players do not win the National Championship. That was a easy statement to prove. Tim "the icon" Tebow is also an icon.
Which is fine if you believe that he won't last, but do you have any reasons why you believe he won't last? That is a part of my ***** about all of this, those writers are not saying anything about his football ability, only a unpolitic quote and then saying due to the quote, he cannot play football. That is borderline mentally deficient on their part.
Coke leaves the body in 3 days... I can recall Warren Sapp falling like a bowling ball down a well due to pot smoking at Miami.
And again, I point out: Flacco was not able to beat out Tyler Palko in college. Where is Tyler Palk again?
The latest attempt to attack him is PFT: Newton never said any such thing, that is solely on Florio adding some hot sauce to his comment.
Those who aren't fans of Newton will continue to unfairly nitpick and scrutinize everything he says or does; while on the flip side, those who are fans will continue to make excuses for some of the questionable stuff he is saying or has done in the past that probably does deserve to be considered somewhat.
That's a false equivalence. Not even someone like me has said that his past doesn't "deserve to be considered somewhat". What bothers me is those who question whether Cam has (1) the work ethic; and (2) the smarts. All based on some bad judgments he made when he was 18. That's just silly.
We all know now that Newton at the present time doesn't have the presence or the mechanics to throw to an area out of a five step drop. Can you imagine him throwing into a tight window at the next level. That alone without all the other factors looms quite large.
Well, I think that is legit criticism, it is not just made up or inferred stuff, such a view would be based on facts. Now it could be the wrong opinion to form, but it is not made of whole cloth.
I think the hype surrounding such a player is whats absurd. When you talk about a scouting process youre evaluating what parts of a players game will translate well to the NFL. In Newton's game as it was last year the answer is not much.
"..parts of a players game..." That is what bothers me, it is not his game that is being spoken about, it is everything else, with pft even insinuating that Newton was blaming small conference Wr's being too slow to catch his passes, and he never said it. I've yet to hear or read a pundit say something like "tremendous runner in the open field, here he is running away from All Whatever Conference player Joe Schmaltz and he has been timed at 3.75 in the 40 so you know Schmaltz can run..."
In some respects though he puts himself through that with all the off field crap he did; theft, cheating, referring to himself in the third person, possibly involved in the next reggie bush like scandal...not many people are going to find anyone who does that kind of crap likeable, will root for them to succeed, or believe them to be high in character. I dont want him to fail; I wouldnt wish that on anyone but I think he is putting himself in the hole before he even gets to the field. As for his game; Ive made it quite clear how I feel about QB's that come from non-traditional systems as college players and then have to learn new systems as a pro. Learning progressions, reading defenses and coverages..those are the hardest things to do. You cant utilize the physical skill you have properly until you do those things. What separates an Aaron Rodgers or a Drew Brees who came from a non-traditional system from a Cam Newton is the fact that they were forced to learn those things before they became great QB's. Can Cam Newton do the same? Its an extremely difficult process coming from a nontraditional system to a pro style system and Newton is 3 years behind someone like a Greg McElroy or a Ryan Mallett. A pro style system is less conducive to flashy stats but more conducive to a player being a good NFL QB.
Disagree, what happens is the system then goes on tilt and the point is reached where he cannot do anything right and it becomes obvious, I'd hope for better from people who earn their living based on the Draft but.. Yep, clearly, so why isn't the Draft Industry saying those things other than to build hype now, to tear down the closer to the Draft we approach? My goodness there will not be a single new frame of film of Newton playing between now and April 28th.
No what happens is once people get the chance to properly evaluate a full season of work they see players for what they are. Sometimes they miss the boat and they are missing it on newton now because they still have him in the top 15 despite the fact he has shown mediocre to poor ability to read coverages.
Newton has a grand total of 290 passing plays on film, the season has been over for 4 months, with one bowl game, not even 3 passing plays per day and it would have been finished, CK broke him down weeks ago and yet they act as if there is some great mystery here? Please, the Draft Industry is just as guilty as the Mike Florio of the world are in all of this. Which is why I'm nowhere nearly involved in all of the draft stuff this yr, don't look behind the curtain.
