http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/02/18/john-fox-broncos-are-committed-to-the-4-3-defense/ This will be tough for them to pull off as McDaniels bet heavily on the 3-4, including signing Dumervil to a 60 million dollar extension as well as drafting Robert Ayers (whom many draftniks liked) the Broncos are more or less starting from scratch on this switch with needs all over the front 7, add in Champ Bailey is likely leaving and this could be another bad yr for Defense in Broncoland. Oddly enough though, the only front 7 player who makes sense for them to take at #2 would be Nick Fairley, with Dumervil and Ayers to play DE, they need DT's and at least one Cornerback, if the Panthers go Fairley the Broncos may go with LSU's Patrick Peterson.
With Peterson your getting a shutdown corner and a dynamic returner for his first couple years...value goes up to top 5.
To be expected. John Fox is a fairly rigid coach and there was little chance he’d stick with the 3-4, particularly since Denver’s defense has stunk for years. Dumervil becomes a tradable asset at this point.
Exactly Des, when I drop these nuggets it is with the longshot hope that it will in someway benefit the Dolphins. "if" Denver takes Bowers with the #2 pick Dumervil is expendable and I've read that Robert Ayers already is expendable in Denver.
Then they could not take Bowers, as that is his role, and Doom really couldn't play Strongside DE either, they either keep him and take someone else in the draft, I'd think they look at Fairley, or they have to move him on the cheap do to the contract, he just is not a 4-3 RDE, he needs space to be his most effective. I'd bet Denver would really, really, like to move out of the #2 overall, if the Panthers go Fairley, they take a Cb (not a solid value that high imo) or the take DT II Marcel Darius, who is not a #2 type of pick, they could go Wr with BeBe Thomas tearing his achilles but it would make much more sense to trade out. "If" we wanted Cam Newton, they are my target to trade up with in the Top 5, as I doubt he makes it past Buffalo at #3 or Cinci at #4. At least that is how I see it, I could be massively wrong, but Elway being a newb VP and Xanders still on the Staff, I think they would make the deal.
I actually think Denver is very likely to trade down, and trade down for cheap. They can still select any number of very good 4-3 defensive linemen at 15, too. If Carolina doesn’t draft Cam Newton, I’m on the phone with Denver immediately.
Depends, "cheap" in draft pick costs maybe, but in salary cap costs the last uncapped Draft the #2 overall will be extremely pricey. The plot..thickens: Would guess that Peterson is no longer in play at the #2 overall, though maybe Fox wants two shutdown Cb's?
