Thought I would post this info Regarding our pick Strengths: Has a great frame and shows the ability to play around 290 pounds. Displays a violent punch, has a mean streak and flashes the ability to shed blocks quickly. At his best playing inside and taking on blocks. Can be very difficult to move when he stays low. Has experience lining up at defensive tackle and is versatile enough to slide inside as a 3-4 end in the NFL. Wraps up upon contact and is a reliable open field tackler. Is a relentless pass rusher and flashes the ability to fight though double teams. Use hands to protect legs, stays balanced and can get over cut blocks. Drives legs once engaged, shows adequate lower body strength and can push tackles back into the pocket. Looks to knock the ball loose when gets to the quarterback and is a ball hawk. Tall, jumps well and blocked a kick during 2006 season. Weaknesses: He lacks the burst and athletic ability to apply any consistent pressure as a pass rusher. Needs to know his role and must maintain bulk in order to be successful as a 3-4 end in the NFL. Plays far too high at times and can get driven off the ball. Lacks great awareness and doesn't always get hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback. Overall: In Langford's first three seasons at Hampton (2004-'06), he appeared in 36 games (27 starts) and recorded 164 total tackles (42.5 for losses) and 18.5 sacks. As a senior in 2007, he started all 11 games and finished the season with 72 tackles (13.5 for losses), six sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. He began his career at defensive tackle, moving to right defensive end in 2005 before switching to the left side in '06. Playing at a small school obviously raises concerns about Langford's ability to make the leap to the NFL. He needs to become a more fundamentally sound run defender and learn to play with more consistent leverage. However, Langford has the frame, bulk and natural strength to take on blocks as a two-gap end in a 3-4 alignment. That's why we think the small-school product will not last long on Day 2 of the 2008 draft
Not to bad of a pick but I would have liked to see us pick a CB or RB We have Patrick Cobbs Ricky William and coming back from Injury Ronnie Brown for RB's We need someone to fill that hole. Now I do see a pickup from a released player from one of the other teams. Hopefully the same is for CB as well. Look at my sleeper pick for Miami ... Manningham
And he would have been around later in the third. If they really had him targetted, they should have traded back further. That pick is like a late second rounder and Langford is late 3rd-4th round talent. Bad value.
I disagree Langford in the early 3rd is very good value and the fact that the Pats traded down with the Chargers might be a sign that they wanted him, something that I've read a few times. Agree to disagree
I think its a good pick and I have been wanting this guy since the start of the draft lol. I dont think he would have been there later because he has a lot of upside.
I agree he was a reach. But we reached on a "football player" not a workout warrior. He was All Conference. And you need DLineman...alot of them. I give the FO the benefit of the doubt on this.
And I think the fact the Fins picked him there is a sign that they wanted Greco and were taken flat-footed when he was picked right before them. They screwed up by trading back and then compounded the screw up by reaching.
I dont think he's a reach at all. he mightve been available later in the round but we would have risked him being off the board. Good pick, no gripes whatsoever. With five minutes you dont have a chance to work the phones
On almost everything draft related, you and I have seen eye to eye Mike, but I think this was really a reach, and I think there was MUCH more talent still on the board. I think he will be a platoon type DE nothing more. There were 5-10 players still on the board that ARE gonna be starters. I wouldve liked this pick at the 4-1 (Which we dont have anymore) but not the 3-3
But that is a sign, everytime you see a team trade down it's quite realistic to assume they wanted a player with that pick and moved down because he's no longer there, I just fail to see how us taking Langford is any kind of sign we wanted Greco.
Wow, Carolina got Godfrey AND Connor. Now THAT is good second day drafting. They probably got two starters right there.
There had been reports we were interested in Greco. Langford was a huge reach. It looks like a "oh crap, who do we pick now?" moment to me.
Both Miami and NE showed alot of interest in Langford, if we tried to trade down to pick him up later in the round he more than likely would have been gone. I don't see how this was a panic pick by Miami.
Yeah, and there were also reports JT was traded yesterday. Reports = Rumors Or in other words a complete waste of time to give any attention to.
Actually that is very unlikely. Only a horrible GM would have traded back unless there were more than two players there in the first place.
I don't think so Rick. Even I would have a plan B,C ect to fall back to if my guy was gone. This might be a new FO but it's not their first draft together.
Sorry Ken, I just saw this. I love the pick. Both Miami and NE liked Langford and NE has a history of either drafting BPA or overdrafting guys that they like. After the Dallas trade, there was no way Langford would have fallen to us with the Philly 4th. I'm a big believer in defense and I love this guy, it's the only pick in my mock that I got right so far.
Sounds like everyone thought the pick was a good one. He's another DE and if we are going to the 3-4 we needed to upgrade. "Langford will be a hotly sought after prospect in the 2008 NFL Draft because his size, athletic ability and versatility. He could bulk up a little and play defensive tackle, similar to how the Rams are using 2007 first round NFL Draft pick Adam Carricker, who has almost identical size. He could of course be played at his natural defensive end position, but I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility of him trimming down and playing outside linebacker for a team utilizing the 34 defense. The Cowboys’ Greg Ellis made a similar transaction. No matter how or where he is played, he has immense NFL potential. Langford is very aggressive; he will never be labeled as a pile inspector. He plays football with a very high motor and when you see him move you would never believe he is only a biscuit away from 300 pounds. He has quick feet like a linebacker, plays with his head up and quickly finds the ball and diagnosis the play. Langford will have to fight the small school pedigree and he will have to learn a wider assortment of pass rushing moves. His body is already NFL ready, but he won’t be able to bull rush or run around the tackles in the NFL, he will have to learn how to use his hands better. As we get closer to the Scouting Combine and the NFL Draft, Kendall Langford will be a name whispered by all the NFL Scouts."
There is a bit of a difference between the two IMO. Trade speculation is just that, speculation. But when a player is asked flat out who he has talked to and he offers up Miami and NE and how many times he's talked to them or which team has shown the most interest, then that is a bit different.
You dont like th epick, thats fine, but dont say the FO didnt know what to do when a guy they wanted was taken right before them. That just doesnt make any sense
