I still think something could be made of him. Now what would interest me is Aaron Maybin and Roscoe Parrish from the Bills one would upgrade the Returner position, the other would add athleticism to a woefully unathletic backup linebacker corps in Miami.
I think the only way that something can be made of him is if the light suddenly went on. A pass-rush starved Jets team with Rex Ryan at the helm couldn't do anything with him, and he was a pet project of Rex's. I wouldn't have much hope.
No thanks to Gholston. It's not like he'd be switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and he'd have potential for us. The Jets seem to do a better job than us at squeezing all the talent they can with their defensive players, why do we think we can be smarter than them? I'd rather not waste the roster spot, use it for developing a rookie.
Alen and myself had this discussion before, the fact of the matter is the Jets do not develop young linebackers they prefer veterans who do not need to be coached up, Alen (iirc) said Gholston has poor hand placement, for my part I think he is miscast as a Will/passrusher, he is a Sam/Strongside OLB where his lack of a passrushing ability is not really an issue. Stuff the Te or G or at least stand up the Tackle, then make the play. To me that is the role for him and would allow him to use his strengths instead of highlighting his weaknesses ie pure passrushing. That said, I will miss the Jets fans views of him, the "Jenkins picks up Gholston and throws him at the Qb for the sack" was one of the funniest things I've ever read online...
I hate arguments like this. Heard a few people say the same thing about Henne. Its ridiculous. The Jets wanted Gholston to succeed more then anyone in football. as does every team with their draft picks, and more importantly their first rounders. They did everything in their power to develop him. what a ridiculous argument to think otherwise.
Well consider of their 4 Starting OLB's, and 5 who play frequently, they drafted none of them and 4 are over 30, it seems clear no? David Harris and Gholston were Mangini picks, Thomas was a Mangini signing, Pace, Scott, Taylor were all FA signings they have not drafted a OLB since Ryan has been there.
actually, you can't draw that conclusion, only that they prefer vets over younguns. on a side note, David Harris has developed very nicely. I'd love to sign that guy, give us a great 3 - OLB rotation
He had two yrs under mangini when Rexxy arrived, he was a young Vet, otherwise they have signed FA's over drafting or developing any other OLB. Will also point out that Bill Sheridan has developed an impressive number of young Lb's both with the Giants and with us, have to put Misi and Wake on his resume, so why not take a shot on a player with tools but no productin like Ghost? Or Maybin?
wasn't disagreeing with you there. I know Harris was developed before Ryan, but you still can't draw that conclusion. maybin would be good too, I just like harris a little better.
Jest may be planning on tagging him per rotoworld, would make sense but it also would mean Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie are all set to hoist anchor out of the port of NY. Besides, I was thnking "highly drafted disappointment who was released" ie a project.
Some guys get all the breaks. I wish the Jets would have paid me a few million to get zero sacks over three seasons.
Maybin I can agree with looking at. But at this point Vernon has been in the league to long - it just isn't there. Sometimes that potential that once was seen is never realized.
To me, that is his largest hinderance to being able to restart his career, he is is quite wealthy from being the 6th overall pick, if he wasn't maybe being waived would be a wake up call.
yea. seems clear they put the better players on the field and it seems pretty clear they tried to develop Gholston just like everyone else would of
Hmm, same was said of Ikaika Francis though Alen, he really came off of the scrap pile, granted he was no great shakes at the Sam, but it does show it can be done. My question with Ghost is how bad does he want it? My goodness with those measurables even on ST he should be blowing people up..if not, why not? I'd guess it boils down to how much faith one has in Bill Sheridan, to me he has done a fine job at developing Lb's and De's in NY and now in Miami, to me give him someone with Ghost's tools and see what he can do with him.
