Starting to second-guess my 3DS preorder… eh, screw it, too late now.. I’ll wait and see if the PSP2 can get custom firmware loaded.
Ok, they 4x typo is a bit more expected than an actual implementation. The device looks slick as hell.
It’s 4 times the amount of pixels, not 4 times the resolution. Doubling the resolution quadruples the pixel count.
I believe they got that from the slide. There’s definitely four times the amount of something, it’s just not 4 times the resolution. Engrish strikes back.
The OLED screen is also a touch screen. So there’s a 5’’ touch screen on the front, and the touch pad on the back. Plus the front and rear facing cameras. Plus 3G. Sony is going to war hard with Apple. I don’t even think they care about Nintendo and the 3DS. Dare I say that they’re pulling a Wii, and trying to position the PSP2 as the “second device” you get in addition to a cell phone.
Sounds closer to right than direct competition to the 3DS. After seeing this thing, I really don't see it below $350 (if even that low), yet I'm ready to buy one right now regardless of entry cost.
I wonder if maybe they don't price it as high as I think it will because they'll be able to make up the difference with digital software sales (hopefully games stay at like $40 or less).
Irony: Nintendo has been trying to compete with cell phones in general and the iPhone in specific for two years now. (Thus the DSi, aka the iDS-but-we-can’t-call-it-that-because-it’s-too-obvious, and the DSi XL.) Sony just comes along and delivers a better combo (with the PSPhone + PSP2) than Nintendo. I wonder if the presence of 3G means there’s a price subsidy. We’ll find out. And I’m going to wait on the PSP2. I know for a fact the 3DS will get the type of games I like—Phoenix Wright, Layton, Dragon Quest, etc—so I want to see if the PSP can do more than just first party Sony games.
Okay… I think Sony has made a better gadget than Nintendo. That’s the natural order of things: Sony is very good at making gadgets. But I have all the gadget I need in my iPhone. So this comes down to the games. As usual.
You can download games onto the PSP2 just like the PSP Go. Capcom, Koei-Tecmo, Konami, Sega, and Activision reps are on stage. Square-Enix notably absent. New Monster Hunter game for PSP2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd sold 4 million copies, so this is kind of a big deal. Edit: Nevermind, it’s not new, it’s just a downloadable version of MHP3 for PSP2. Not MHP4. Monkey Ball and a new Yakuza game from Sega. Dynasty Warriors from Koei-Tecmo. Of course. Hideo Kojima on stage. Showing a demo of MGS4 on PSP2, a cutscene rendered in realtime. Not a game announcement, just a demo. It’s pretty striking that all Sony has to show right now are demos. PSP2 is nowhere near ready for launch. Maybe they’ll have launch lineup announcements at E3. Maybe.
Kojima: "This game used the model data and environments from PS3, and it was exported directly to PSP2” Demo ran at 20FPS on PSP2. They’d obviously change the graphics to get it up to 30FPS at least if this were a real game.
Kojima: “My dream to play home console games outside on a portable hasn’t been realized yet.” Talks up cloud computing and how it can change games. Says his dream will come true in the near future and will announce a related project at E3. Tim Sweeney from Epic is on stage. Showing off what looks like Epic Citadel. Yes, it’s Epic Citadel, but with characters and weather effects. I see Epic has had time to refine their mobile game engine.
Activision up on stage. Guess what? It’s Call of Duty, Activision’s apparent only franchise! CoD announced for PSP2. No details. No demo. Nothing. Lame.
Event over. No price announcement. Guess they’re saving that for E3 and TGS. Predictions? I say $300+.
$300+ would definitely be my guess as well. And you mentioned the NGP being nowhere near ready for launch, I'm not surprised, they said the thing was expected to come out this holiday season (so like 10 months away). And that will likely be Japan only (but hopefully not).
I guess stateside not every SKU will have 3G. I'm thankful, as I would prefer to not have the 3G even if it only saves me like $50.
I threw down a preorder on the 3DS. Figured Ill sell it for profit during launch, and if not,'I'll cancell it and get my money back.
Apparently, all the development units are slider models, which is why the one developer on stage said it was the first time he had ever held a PSP2. It’s possible the brick design is just a placeholder and Sony will unveil a new design later. Or they could be holding the slider model back for the PSP2 Lite.
Well I just put in my preorder for the aqua model. Hopefully one of the games jumps out as one I'll want at/near launch.
3DS. My bad, I'm in the wrong thread. I will pre-order the PSP2/NGP though once a release date and price comes out.
Thought so. I was really hoping Nintendo America would bring the red 3DS out here, but it’s just aqua or black. I went with black. The aqua looks like a Fisher-Price toy, IMO.
That wouldn't be smart...every ds had a red MK version after it's release. Make a bigger deal out of it, more folks will buy it.
In this case, Nintendo is limiting the color availability to individual regions. You get a different choice of colors depending on where you live.
For what it's worth, GameStop is taking preorders on it, it's marked at $300. I'm assuming it's the 3G-less one.
They also marked it as $999. Gamestop has no idea what the thing is going to cost, they just caught flak for using $999 as a placeholder and so they bumped it down to $300. It’s still a placeholder price.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has been officially announced. Hands-on at Engadget. The thing will have 50 multiplayer games at launch.
