I found this on You Tube.... Blaine Gabbert at a Nebraska QB Camp....you really get to see his footwork....delivery...etc....
And now after watching that....see what it looks like in Game Speed....
What about Brandon Lloyd? They are pretty stacked at wide receiver. Green could be a special talent that is too good to pass up, however if there was another great talent that filled one of the many holes, I would imagine they would go that route.
By the way.... Gabbert looks like he has the frame to bulk up some as well....if needed. I really like the way this kid looks.... But...I really hope we get the right QB coach in to work with these kids whomever we take....NOT A BIG FAN of what we have done with Henne
Jim Harbaugh thinks Andrew Luck should come out. I think Harbaugh's influence will win out in the end.
Denver will definitely want to go with someone like a Marcel Dareus or maybe DaQuan Bowers. I don't know if they'll move to a 4-3 or not. Jason Hunter has been something of a revelation for them, even if Robert Ayers has not been. When Elvis Dumervil gets back, if they can make that front more physical, they have a chance to be a good defense. I think they're pretty committed to Tim Tebow and to me they have plenty of WRs, more than they need. They need physicality up front and I think Marcel Dareus would give it to them.
If it's an injury that will take the rehab into his rookie season it will. An ACL injury would pretty much keep him from being the top pick.
That's what happened to O'Brien Schofield. He tore up his knee and fell. He should and would've gone higher IMO.
I watched this game live. There's 2 plays in that second half specifically that stand out for me. The first is I think the second play where he hits Denario Alexander down the middle. His eyes are left all the way and then suddenly he spies Alexander and an an instant the decision is taken to throw and not only to throw but to do two things: see that the ball needs to be dropped in, but dropped in quick enough to avoid the onrushing safety (who whiffs the tackle) picking it off. It's everything you look for. Forget the fact that he throws off the back foot, look at the arm strength considering the motion, look at the touch and look at the decision making. Second play is later on when he shows great wheels to the sideline, then throws a rope about 40 yards downfield which is complete. That's just a ridiculous throw. There's some ugly plays mixed in there as well, but he has real ability. Watch how he uses his eyes.
I’m sure Gabbert is a fine prospect, but damn, I can’t get past the fact that his name sounds like a new Muppet. Gonzo, Kermit, Fozzie, and Gabbert.
You honestly think Carolina is going to consider taking him at the top spot? I can't see it happening but if you're right, I'll give you credit.
Thanks for the write up CK. I was just getting interested in this guy so it was very timely. Definately gonna watch tonight.
I don't want credit for anything my friend but if Luck doesn't come out, who are Carolina taking? At QB they could fall in love with Cam Newton. At tailback, no-one, AJ Green at WR, no tight end and no LT. They could take Bowers, Fairley or Dareus. No linebacker and Peterson's a reach at 1. No safety. So essentially 5 players. If you can't get Luck, you still have a 2nd round pick from a year ago in Jimmy Clausen and there are issues around Newton. Green is Andre Johnson/Calvin Johnson/Fitzgerald but do you take him 1st. You say that Fairley is lazy from your contacts so that's out there. So that leaves Bowers or Dareus. I thought Da'Quan was a future #1 overall pick as a freshman and have said it many times. But despite injuries, Dareus is a beast. So if Luck stays in school, you're looking at just Dareus and Bowers. Which makes him a candidate for 1st overall.
I think the Bengals might start re-building around Carson Palmer with youth now that they see that when they take Terrell Owens' and Chad OchoCincos' egos out of the mix, you actually get some pretty good performances out of Palmer. They should end up picking high enough to get an A.J. Green, I would think. I don't know how the order is shaking out but to me, I think Andrew Luck will come out regardless of what's being said out there by his dad or Jim Harbaugh. Logic will prevail in that one. And so I have the Panthers taking him. I have the Bengals going for A.J. Green. I think the Broncos are a lock to take a defensive lineman and get bigger and more physical up front, and Marcel Dareus is target #1 on that front. I really am starting to think that the Bills will not go for a QB...Fitzpatrick has really settled in there and I wouldn't be surprised to see them want to keep a good thing going with him. They need better line play on both sides. I'm not sure if Derrek Sherrod will grade high enough for them to take him, or by the time all is said and done Anthony Castonzo might grade out with the teams the way I've got him...if they don't go with Sherrod or Castonzo I think they go with DaQuan Bowers. Kyle Williams has been special, but they need someone else on that DL. Then you have some teams like Cleveland, Houston, San Francisco, Dallas, Minnesota, Detroit, Arizona, Washington, Oakland and Seattle. So many of them need QBs. You could envision Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Mallett, Cam Newton AND Jake Locker all being off the board by pick #16. Let's say Mortenson is not full of crap and the Skins do covet Locker. You could see Minnesota going for Cam Newton (Spielman loves winners), Arizona going for Mallett, and Pete Carroll going for Blaine Gabbert. That leaves Cleveland, Houston, San Francisco, Dallas, Detroit and Oakland. It's hard to imagine Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara still being on the board when we pick, with the needs of those teams. Also not hard to imagine guys like Sherrod, Love and Castonzo being off the board. Adrian Clayborn could and should be off the board by our pick. Considering all that, it's not hard to imagine that a deep play making receiver like Michael Floyd, Julio Jones or Justin Blackmon being our best bet. Or maybe they depart from their traditional stance on 1st round RBs and take a Mark Ingram or Ryan Williams. If the pick were a defensive pick, I could see a fan mutiny happening...but Martez Wilson, if he comes out, would have to be high up in the consideration.
Do you think Akeem Ayers or Von Miller are worth that high of a pick (to us)? Do you like Ayers (I'm pretty sure you like Miller)? Of the WRs, Blackmon, Jones, Floyd please (in that order). PS: The oakland pick is actually NE's pick.
I love Von Miller, but no. To both he and Akeem Ayers. And I do not think any DLs are in the mix. Ah hell I forgot about that Oakland-NE trade. God damnit. So basically, NE plays us next weekend, having secured homefield advantage in the playoffs, knowing that if they let us win, they get a higher pick in the Draft from the Oakland trade? Great. That'll be the most hollow 8-8 I can remember. It'll make up for the game the refs took away from us against Pittsburgh. I think with this pick we're going to really be looking hard at a Ryan Williams, Mark Ingram, Michael Floyd, Justin Blackmon, Julio Jones, or maybe DeMarcus Love who could shift inside to Left Guard or play Right Tackle.
If Cam Newton falls to the 8-10 rage, I think you've got to consider making a play. Same thing with Gabbert if you have a conviction.
As has been stated before, I believe...if there's no CBA in place by draft day, then there will be no trading of contracted players during the draft. I don't think the rules allow it. That puts a severe limitation on our ability to trade up. Have to give like a 2nd next year, not sure that's something we want to do.
You may be right on the rules, although I'm not sure why the lack of CBA would affect trades as there are no "no trade" clauses in NFL contracts, nor are there any other restrictions. But I'll assume you're correct. If you have a conviction on a QB and it takes a 2nd next year to move up, I do it without hesitation. You have to take the plunge sometime. Things aren't always going to fall into your lap. sometimes you have to go out and grab what you want. That's just me.
Not yet, but basically, replace the name in the T.J. Yates write-up with Pat Devlin, and that's his write-up. There are some differences between the two but not many. The biggest and most glaring are that Yates plays against ACC (and SEC) foes while Devlin plays against FCS foes. Also, Yates has grown up in a dropback system while Devlin has grown up in a shortgun system. Devlin's release point is consistently higher though, even with both favoring quick flick motions. Yates is a little more advanced on some of the minute details of the position, because of the offense he's in. Devlin seems a little more consistently accurate on his ball location. He also uses his eyes a little more to manipulate defenders, but that's not necessarily a big deal since they both do it and you're not able to do it as often against pro defenses as you can college defenses, and Devlin might be afforded the ability to do that more at Delaware simply because he gets better protection and faces worse athletes than Yates. I'd like to assume that Yates has better deep vertical accuracy and mechnaics (because it's hard to be as good as he is with it), but I just haven't seen the reps of Devlin's to make that judgment. They both favor the 15 to 22 yard ball as opposed to the 25 to 30 yard ball, which means they both favor shorter checkdown type throws. That also means they both go through to their 3rd and 4th reads very consistently and throw with timing and anticipation. They're both about the same size. There are questions about both players' ability to consistently drive the 30+ yard ball on a flat trajectory. They both have extremely lively and disciplined footwork, which is remarkable because Devlin is in a shortgun. They both seem dedicated to the details of the position. They both use their eyes. They both can use quick releases and their ability to get the ball out in order to fight against pressure. They both can end up turtling and going down for the sack when truly pressured and forced to reset their feet. Both also have the ability to make throws on the run though, and to improvise. They both understand how and when to use touch. They're very similar players. If I've recently decided to put Yates above Devlin, it's because of the experience level. Like I said, Yates has developed nearly the same skill set while facing ACC opponents and even SEC one like LSU, with a line in front of him that is almost always outclassed, and in a truly pro style offense. He's been to Manning Camp three years in a row and it shows in his game, so it wouldn't be a stretch to assume he's got that same kind of dedication to the position that the best QBs usually do. I would assume the same about Devlin, it's probably a safe assumption, but there's just a little less evidence of it.
For me, if you have a reasonable chance to move up for a Newton or Gabbert you have to make it. Enough is enough of getting second rate QBs. It CAN work, but most of the time it doesn't. It's time to really invest in a high end QB prospect. If that costs you a future 2nd, then you have to bite the bullet IMO. And if not I think you have to try your best to move down. I love Williams and Ingram, but I like them a lot less at 15 or 16 with no second rounder. I think the point of taking one of the deep threat WRs is one that has to be considered. This class is absolutely loaded at WR and while the Dolphins have a solid WR corps they badly need a game breaker. The other option only after moving down would be an OG.
I think moving down is much more likely than moving up for a QB. That's generally true, but more so in this QB class. Outside of Luck every reasonable evaluation of the QBs is going to include some big question marks. Having conviction is one thing, but gambling multiple picks only makes sense when you have some semblance of certainty in what you're getting or at least some reason to expect that the guy you move up for is a better prospect than what you could get later. I don't feel there's any of that in Newton (I plan to watch Gabbert's game tonight). IMO we'd be best served by dropping back to the late first and getting one of the top WRs or even a QB like Devlin.
That deep route and catch from McNutt is exciting, but just to temper peoples' excitement, Gettis reportedly had 4.67 speed the last time he was tested at Missouri. That deep ball does not prove that McNutt has the speed you need at the next level. On the other hand that's a great throw by Stanzi. You have to be really accurate to hit a guy like McNutt in stride as opposed to hitting a guy with faster speed in stride. The guys with speed change their speed and run under the ball, make you as a QB look good. McNutt doesn't exactly have that kind of running ability.
Gabbert knows he's playing for the scouts tonight. Look at the speed of his drop and footwork. He's definitely giving a little bit extra.
Sign me up for Gabbert, he's looked impressive even with the Henning like play calling in their first red zone attempt. 250+ yards so far in the first half.
Ricky Stanzi is a very underrated prospect. He doesn't have great physical skills, but he has the kind of accuracy and leadership ability that you want in a quarterback.
