As far as all the positions go sure, there are plenty players better than him, but he is still one of the best SS's in the game right now, even at his age...to other teams he is worth not much, but to the Yanks he is worth alot more...dude cmon, everything the Yankees have nowadays money wise can be attributed to Jeter marketing, ie YES network, the new Stadium, Legends Field etc etc.....on the field of play yes I would say Mo is every bit as responsible if not more than Jeter for the Championships, but from a dollar standpoint it isnt even a question...and with 3000 hits looming they are into it for millions more....

Like I said I give the man a blank check for 3 years....but no way do you do 4 on him....

this is insane....obivously I dont think we will be seeing Jeter back at those numbers...

Jeter & Yankees Are $80MM Apart

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 26 at 8:06am CST]

Derek Jeter’s representatives are asking for at least $80MM more than the Yankees are willing to offer in negotiations for the free agent shortstop, according to Bill Madden of the New York Daily News. The starting point for Jeter and agent Casey Close was six years and $150MM, according to Madden, who reports that the Jeter camp is not budging from demands for a $25MM annual salary. Alex Rodriguez’s contract “is at the cruz of Jeter’s and Close’s stance,” according to Madden.

The Yankees have offered Jeter multiple deals, including one that would pay the 36-year-old $45MM over the course of the next three seasons. Close suggested that the Yankees' tactics are "baffling," so Yankees GM Brian Cashman encouraged Jeter and his agent to test the free agent market in search of a more generous deal.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post proposes that the Yankees could sign Jeter to a six-year $75MM deal that could become more lucrative if Jeter reaches incentives based on plate appearances. The suggested deal would pay Jeter $20MM per season from 2011-13 and shield the Yankees from the luxury tax.

But yet there are numerous articles that say the Yankees shoudl spend whatever to get this guy back?? The Yankees are trying to show some restraint here, and they get dogged for it...I dont get it...

First of all don't pay any attention to the media and their 'stories'. It's their job to get someone to buy their paper or click on their link. They're going to say something contraversal in order to create a buzz which leads to people buying their product. Second who even knows if this is in fact true. Media members have made up things before or have gotten things wrong/reported wrong (case in point the Victor Martinez White Sox offer was 4/48 NOT 3/48 which people were reporting, that's a big difference).

With all that being said you know Jeter (and Rivera) aren't going anywhere, they're going to be on the team next year and beyond so there's no use getting worried or worked up about it. No matter what contract Jeter gets, he's going to be overpaid. There just isn't a market for a 37 year old SS coming off his worst offensive year and is not (and hasn't been) a good defensive SS in years.

The problem with this Jeter thing is that the Yankees shouldn't have opened their mouths and went after him (saying things like he should explore the market or he doesn't want to be a Yankee etc). They should have shut up and not said a peep. It's never any good to say things in the press like that. I realize they didn't like what Jeter's agent said but it's the agent's job to try to get the most money and years out of the team. If the Yankees didn't say anything you wouldn't get the media killing them.

Either way it's a no win situation for the team. If for some reason Jeter leaves and signs with someone else they're going to get hammered and if they sign Jeter to a big deal they're going to get hammered (and the media members that don't kill them for the deal will the minute Jeter doesn't produce).

Of course the other problem is Jeter is a God in New York and he gets treated differently. Whether that's fair or not, that's also a factor. Which is a big reason why he's going to get overpaid.

If I were a Yankee fan, I'd sit back and not worry about it.

True but as well non-media types too, up here in Sox-ville, all you hear is "If you guys let him walk over 20 million, you're stupid because you guys over spend on everybody anyways" which again is baffling I dont get how just because it is the Yankees you have to overspend...it seems in order for any free agent to sign in NY nowadays it is automatically 20+ million a year......baseball is kinda getting out of hand in that respect...

Well the only other players in baseball getting over $20 million per year that aren't on the Yankees are Johan Santana and Albert Pujols, I believe. I could be missing a player or so (and if Pujols isn't a 20 million a year player right now he will be soon) so it's not like baseball has that problem. Maybe there's a problem with the way Cashman/FO talks contracts with the agents. Maybe the agents just get the best of them? It could just be that the Yankees don't have a hard budget so making sure they get the player they want means they have to overspend a bit is ok with them.

I would agree with you there. The majority of Red Sox fans calling into a Red Sox radio station talking about the Yankees aren't really the most biased out there. In fact I think that 98% of the people that call into a radio station to talk sports with the 'experts' have no clue anyway.

Progress is being made with the Mariano Rivera signing....numbers bouncing around in the high teens for 1 or 2 years.

Not as much progress via the MEDIA on the Jeter front, hopefully behind the scenes more is being made.

Pettitte still expecting to sign a 1yr contract. (dont believe any rumors of other teams trying to poach him)

Yankees' Gil McDougald, '51 ROY, dies at 82.

    Yankees.lhblogs.com:

Feinsand: Rangers make their pitch to Pettitte

Mark Feinsand has the story over at The Daily News.

The Texas Rangers have reached out to Andy Pettitte. According to Feinsand’s source, Rangers team president Nolan Ryan reached out to Pettitte in hopes of convincing the left-hander to stay close to home and pitch in Texas.

Previously, Pettitte has indicated that he will pitch for the Yankees or no one next season, but he has been lured back to Texas in the past and it’s hard to blame Ryan for at least pleading his case.

Looks like the Rangers might be competing against the Yankees for more than Cliff Lee this winter

    The latest Yankees talk...

•Talks between the Yankees and Derek Jeter are "at a standstill until Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, 'drink the reality potion,'" a source close to the negotiations tells ESPN's Wallace Matthews. The Yankees are stuck on three years and $45MM, while Jeter wants more years and $23-25MM annually. Matthews says the Yankees are not budging from their offer, though SI's Jon Heyman expects them to up the money but not the years this week.

....but it was a NON STORY the minute pen was put to paper. Andy is either a Yank for 1 more year, or playing with his kids. Thats it.

and whats even better, the Sox tried to get him.....jerks...

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Red Sox tried to "steal" Mariano Rivera from the Yankees with a three-year offer.

The Angels did the same, but Mo turned down both deals and agreed Thursday to a two-year, $30 million pact with the Yankees. If the Red Sox were able to land Rivera, it's quite possible that they would have non-tendered Jonathan Papelbon before Thursday's deadline. Alas, the Yanks and Red Sox will both head into 2011 with familiar ninth-inning faces.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Yankees are "engaged in conversations" with free agent outfielder Carl Crawford.

It's not clear if the Yanks are considering him a backup plan in case they miss out on free agent left-hander Cliff Lee or whether they really want to add the 29-year-old Crawford. The Yankees already have a crowded outfield situation with Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher laying claim to starting jobs, so they'd probably have to move one of the three to clear a spot. Crawford batted .307/.356/.495 with 19 homers and 47 stolen bases this past season for Tampa Bay and is thought to be seeking an eight-year contract.

Sorry Buster, thats not a CROWDED outfield!!! Now, as I have stated its way to early to worry or concern yourself with Crawford. This is SOP for Yanks brass to simply keep in touch so to speak. Jan is the timeframe - that said - having "CC-small" in Left is a HUGE upgrade over Gardner and having the LUXURY of Gardner off the Bench or filing in for a GUARANTEED injury is a big piece of the puzzle. Heck, crowded?? we still need a reliable 5th OF too.

While any of the 30 teams could use Rivera, I'm sure the Red Sox knew there was no way he was going to sign with them so they probably wanted to just (try) to push the price tag up higher for the Yankees.

Same with Angles...and it makes sense to always see. I would think the pricetag angle is the most logical, which again is interesting since it settled at the 2yr $30M I expected and not higher into the $18M range Mo was said to want. Again, they get ripped, but I have to give props to Stein's and Cashman over the calls and decisions they make and the fiscal sense (in perspective of the perception)...I would love fiscal restraint if it meant $15M a year...LOL

Yankees, Five Others Interested In Russell Martin

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 3 at 9:16am CST]
The Yankees, who tried to trade for Russell Martin this week, are one of six teams interested in the 27-year-old free agent, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times reports that the Yankees nearly sent Francisco Cervelli to the Dodgers for Martin (Twitter links). In fact, the Yankees and Dodgers even exchanged medical records on Wednesday.

The Dodgers are nearing a deal with Rod Barajas, but they still have interest in re-signing Martin. Agent Matt Colleran says the Dodgers view his client differently than most teams do.

“They want to continue discussions with the idea that Russ could come back and catch, play second base and third and a little bit out of outfield to see if he likes something like that in the event he ever wants to transition from behind the plate,” Colleran said.
It wouldn't be surprising to see the Royals, Rangers, Mariners, Mets or Brewers look to upgrade behind the plate.

I wouldnt be so sure though, if they want him, they could get him...especially if they dont sign Lee, with rumors of them trying for Martin, you have Monterio in rumors, you could effectivly trade any of the outfielders playing now as well, they seem to be up to something...why try an trade for Martin, when you have Cervelli, Jorge, and a guy that could come up and swing a bat right now in Monterio??

True....but I give Mo ALOT of credit, unlike the other guy he isnt holding up New York for crazy cash, when he could in this instance...if the figures are right 2/30...that isnt even a raise....he has made 15 for the past 3 years....and unlike Jeter again he is the best player at his position, he really could have got 18 if he wanted....wow this makes Jeter look bad, he has to sign today...

You wouldnt be so sure what??? Yanks outfield is not crowded. and I fully expect Yanks will target Crawford following the inhouse business. The whole Russell Martin stuff is nonsense.

Mo has zero to do with Jeter, and it doesnt change how it looks with Jeter at all. He is the Captain...chill! It will be handled appropriately - dont buy into the MEDIA garbage. Mo got exactly what was warranted and deserved. Yanks are never HELD HOSTAGE. Told ya it would be $15M range...and now they move to focus and wrap up Jeter and Pettitte then focus on bullpen arm or two while waiting and see on C. Lee and Crawford come Xmas/New Years and finally a 5th OF. Its like 2009 all over again with CC, Burnett and Tex offseason. Cashman is on the ball.

Well I think the Yankee brand has a lot to do with Rivera staying put. Let's face it they're the most important franchise in sports and being able to say you're a Yankee Legend/Icon and spent your whole career as a Yankee means something, which Rivera has said numerous times. Sure he might have turned down more money and another year but he probably realizes it's not whole it as he's made a lot of money already and that he'll end up making that money back by doing things with/for the Yankees after he retires. But absolutely I respect Rivera as a pitcher and as a man for being able to say no to those offers and stay with his team. Most people/players wouldn't do that.

I wasnt taking offense at all, it is just rumor, but the yankees did try to acquire Martin last yr. Actually the dodgers tried to acquire Cervelli; but it was the yankees that balked. I think Martin would be a solid add. He at one point was shaping up to be a mike piazza type hitter. I think he needs a change of scenery and Kevin Long to work with him. I wouldnt be opposed at all.

I have to disagree FFG...he is long removed from the NEEDLE that may have put him on the Piazza path...those days are long gone. His D and his Bat have taken dives. He cant even start for Dodgers. They want Barajas for goodness sake. Whatever Martin may have been 4 or 5 years ago, that ship has sailed with Mitchell report.

Ouch strong opinions there about Martin and PEDs huh? Could just be wear and tear of being a catcher with a body failing on him and a lot of miles behind the plate. Or it could just be that baseball is a hard game to play at such a high level.

Either way, all the more reasons to backoff and realize as Cashman seems to have done that he isnt what is needed - even as a stopgap. But yes, several ties to PEDs are suspected. But as I said, IMO, nonsense to think about. Now go after Montero with ARI...ahahahaha.

WFAN's Sweeny Murti reports that Derek Jeter's deal with the Yankees will be for three years and around $51 million.

There's an option for a fourth year that Murti says is for less than the $17 million he'll get on average for the first three years. Still wait and see, but sides are closer.

BoSox trade for A-Gone is complete. This make the division a whole lot dicier. The sox will have one hell of a lineup with him being protected by big poopy and yuckaliss. Good deal for them a 28 yr old who plays an awesome first base and can rake from the left side....

Yup, saving grace is Victor Martinez gone. Still have holes at C, and OF. But Youk to 3B and AG @ 1B improves them significantly. Theo has a knack for matching Cashman jab for jab. Let's get Jeter underwraps, move on to Andy with eye on C. Lee, then strengthen bullpen (especially L for Papi and AG) and target Crawford and final add 5th OF.

Just another back and forth offseason...mirrors the usual back and forth regular season too.

Im sure they go after crawford now; looks like Theo is tired of losing!

On the Jeter front; 3 yrs for 15 - 17 is about right, i'm glad he decided to drink "the reality potion".
Mo is pending a physical; Im kinda pissed that the sox offered him a contract...dirty bastards!
    Andy is rumored to want to return;
I like the chatter with crawford; it drives up the asking price and that makes me happy. It also gives us an option if we lose out on Cliff Lee. They sign crawdaddy; trade grandy or gardy for a starting pitcher (grienke?)

Yes, no doubt. Seeing as SD only wants HS players (:tongue2:). But Bell would be a piece NYY would value. The price is always the question, but honestly dont know what SD is thinking.

Bullpen is no doubt an area of improvement and Bell eases some of the real health worries of Mo. He seems impurvious to long-injury, but sooner or later all rubber bands break. Big insurance policy if it happened.

    Har har..:D

It does make sense, and relievers typically are worth 2 good prospects no matter how good they have been simply because they suffer blowouts unexpectedly.

Ray thinks there won't be a much of a market but I can easily see Bell landing in pinstripes as that is how the yankees do things..no chances pay the money and get the best available.

I know Cashman and Co love to SLOW PLAY the media with their true interests; but it would SHOCK me if they made a move for Grienke to be in NY market. I think they take his anxiety seriously and do not see a fit.

I still think CCsmall signs with us, and we keep Gardner as insurance 4th OF/rotational guy, pinch runner, etc. We had what we thought were 3 solid OF for the past two seasons and each time the injury bug put that to risk. Cashman has learned to acquire 5 relatively trust worthy guys to man that mix. CCsmall, Grandy, Swish and Gardner would give him the comfort of getting a 5th.

Also, all this talk of moving Gardy or Grandy (which his 2nd half seems to have nixed) just doesnt compute to equal an Arm. Now Bell? or a solid L pen guy? maybe....with others....but what SP (if we dont sign C. Lee) do you think they fetch?

Personally, we are taking basically a 5th SP..with CCbig, Hughes, Burnett, and AP...I would rather keep Gardy for insurance and bring up a farm arm to fill in.

If we dont land C-lee, which i think there is a possibility; (a small one, but still, with Nolan Ryan's dirty tactics i wouldnt be surprised to see him go back there.) I think the yanks either go after -
Jonathan sanchez (although i think he is a clone of A.J.)
Maybe Kevin Correia; he had a 5.67 era or something like that to finish the season, but before his brother dove off a cliff and died, he was putting together a very nice season.
Maybe Matt Graza if the rays are willing to trade w/in the division; probably more expense than we want to spend.
    Give Ivan Nova a chance?
    Bentances Maybe?
