That...... and a defining win where he takes control from the beginning and never lets up...... throwing for 300+ yards and 4 TDs (with at least 2 of those coming from the throw itself). The Jets loss was close to that IMO.

Henne does look to be close but, has to put a couple of these type games under his belt to move on, and for our team to do the same.

Like NYJ, Tampa, and Pats last year?

    Unless those weren't big enough.

They were some VG wins, and Henne was impressive. I was talking about one of those must win games. You know what I'm talking about, a pressure packed elimination game, a win or miss the playoff game or, more better, a playoff game.

When have you seen improvement in his play fakes? Surely not against Oakland. Those were the worst, most half-hearted play fakes I've ever seen him execute. They were positively Marino-esque.

That pass to Cobbs was a nice "up and down" throw as Sparano called it. He's always struggled with his touch. Maybe he's getting better at those throws.

If only he had marino's quick release, Payton's mental approach, Farve's arm strength and Vicks ability to run the ball... THEN we would have something... ;)

On a different note, is it just me or do his back-shoulder throws seem like one of his passing strengths?

just one no0te on play action. a successful play action play doesnt just require the QB to be an actor. It requires the offensive line and running back to also sell it. good linebackers and DBs tend to make their reads off the offensive line not the QB

Henne was doing a Marino impersonation, knee brace and all. The play fakes were part of it. Give the guy a frakin beak. He got fully into the character he was playing. JK/LOL.

On a serious note, I did see much better play fakes a few weeks ago. I think it was the Titan's game.

They became a strength during the Oakland game. He had a few of them and they were really well thrown.

As far as I'm concern it is about the talent that surrounds a QB, Manning the creative one has 7 picks in 2 games.
Biggest thing about Henne Sunday was the Fins running the ball.Tha t took the pressure off and opened the passing game, of course he executed

On the play fake to Cobbs, Henne turned his back and fully extended his arm for the fake. It was, as the announcer described, "a hard fake". That alone is improvement. He still pulled it back before RW got there so I wouldn't say it was a great fake, but I would say it was an improvement over the fakes he usually does.

The line did a decent job on that play action but RW's effort was pretty weak. He straightened up before he even got to the ball. He was clearly already in pass block mode before the fake was completed.

Are you serious? Let's go to right after Henne's game where he threw 3 picks then. Henne threw 3 picks in one game. That's like 48 over a year!

Manning's picks the past two games have a lot to do with pressure. at least 2 out of 3 picks on manning he was hit letting it go. Henne's picks all can't be said to have been pressured. Some bad decisions. Some WRs letting the ball bounce

Let's be realistic here. Henne is not Marino or Peyton. He is a VG potential QB, and could very well be special.

In any case, he is a QB that has enough talent and leadership to lead a team to a SB with the right surrounding talent. JMO

It was the only fake in the whole game that came even close to looking good. All the other ones looked atrocious.

I think it was probably the only play fake call in the game that he actually felt was worthwhile.

I haven't re-watched the game so you're probably right about the others being atrocious. I can only recall that one being decent b/c it surprised me so. I even exclaimed "nice play fake" at the time (before the pass) and thought "wow he must have worked on that". I can't recall having ever seen a play fake before from him that I thought was anything but half-assed.

When does Henne add a hard snap count? That's something that I see missing and don't get why.

Well, I have seen Henne draw guys, but maybe twice in two years.

Henne, imho, came to the NFL as a very raw Qb in the crafty aspects of the game, as if at Michigan he was a pass throwing statue with a big arm and that was enough, but stuff like pump fakes, altering snap tones, looking off Wr's, taking snaps from the shotgun, Chad Henne is still raw as sushi and he has been around long enough to wonder, legitimately, whether he will really get them.

As for the Fade Routes #1dolphinsfan, bro they can only cover him with one guy as his back is to the out of bounds line...

Hard counts, moving the defense, quick snaps and other creative stuff like that is not something you usually see until a QBs been playing for about 5 years.

Well, his play action motion is streaky as well, even when he wasn't staging the mini rebellion about it, his motion still was not very good.

Its not only his work habit that is outstanding, Peyton puts no limits on himself! Its never I can't do that, its I need to practice enough that this becomes second nature to me. He is a true 3 %'er.

Henne may get alot better but he's no 3 %'er or that would have already shown up on the field and in practice. We might not "see" it but the coaching staff would thus there would have been no benching imho.

Having literally just seen every play fake of his the entire season, I'd give that one play fake about a 5 or 6 out of 10 on the Henne scale. The rest of them were barely registering a 2 or 3. He's capable of really some very fantastic play fakes. But he and the offense have to believe in the necessity of the fake, and you can tell that they often do not, and it's made more obvious by the times when they do believe in it. And it's really NOT just him, having looked at it all. The running backs are almost never using their arms to actually pretend like they just received the ball, they rarely even come close to the exchange point. This convinces me that perhaps James Saxon is not teaching them well enough. Also the OLs rarely take any time to fake anything.

And I'm just checking out the Jets game against the Bengals, because I know the Jets run an offense that we aspire to, and right away the first two non-shotgun pass plays I've seen things I haven't seen all year from Miami.

    1. Mark Sanchez himself foregoing the play fake altogether, but the running back still faking the exchange on his way to running a route.

    2. A play fake so good from everyone involved that I honestly couldn't tell (nor could the cameraman) that the ball was still in Sanchez' hands. Sanchez put his head down, sprinted into the exchange. The running back tracked himself EXACTLY like he would if he were taking the hand-off (which our RBs rarely seem to do). The offensive line blocking scheme seemed very ambiguous, could have definitely been a run play given the track to the outside that the back was showing.

So much of our play faking inadequacy is blamed on Chad Henne...but the problems are everywhere. Whoever is coaching the offense (Who is that guy, anyway? Some guy named Henning or something like that?) is just not very detail-oriented and considering how much he wants to use play-action, he's not making sure his position coaches are coaching it right.

I hate the fade route, and it rarely works. Play action to the TE who bleeds out. Or throw to the back shoulder...or run it.

Eff the fade. Eff it in its ear.

Yep, and it is even bad in the Wildcat play action to Ricky Williams on the jet sweep if you've noticed Ronnie B normally fakes the hand off a couple of feet away from RW, and RW doesn't keep his lower arm tucked into his stomach to ensure he doesn't accidentally knock the ball out of Rb's hands on the fake.

I also hope Henning, Saxon and Lee have paid enough attention to detail to teach Thigpen how to get behind his pads when he is going to initiate contact, something they never bothered doing with Pat White, if you are going to use the #2 Qb as a part time running back, a position he has never played, it would seem wise to teach him at least the basics on how to play running back in the NFL so he does not get knocked the heck out by just lowering his head and leading with it....

some of these posts are boaderline insane - Henne had 1 very good game and now he is in the same sentance as marino and manning, are you ****in serious!!!! us guys that dont beleive Henne is the answer get hammered on if we say anything negative about him when he has a bad game (because its 1 game) and now some of you guys are putting him in manning and marino status because of 1 good game, very hypocritical.

great QBs make other players around them better not the other way around, they have great leadership skills, if they need to get in guys faces they will, if they need to fire guys up they fire them up, they show teammates by performance they they are the captain and it his ship!!

they greats like marino and manning and brady and elway and brees you see from the very beginning some of traits in them and right now I see none of those in Henne. can Henn be a decent to good QB? mabey can he be a great one? not a chance

OK I just finished the Jets-Bengals game. Some notes.

    1. WOW does Mark Sanchez ever get bailed out of some bad throws. Holy crap if Chad Henne threw this many near-picks in a game, he would be run out of town as the worst QB in the history of football.

    2. This is the play-action offense Miami should be striving for.

    3. I notice that there were no play fakes called on weird downs, like 3rd & 10+.

    4. I also notice that the offense believed in the necessity of each play fake.

    5. And you know why? Because only four of the 28 pass calls involved trying to sell a play fake. Imagine that! Using the play fake as a weapon instead of a tag-along to the play call!

    6. The offensive line sold EACH of the play fakes. The first two fakes, the OLs blocked in isolation while the runner tracked to a sprint outside. The third fake involved an OL pulling and the runner tracking right behind him. The fourth fake saw the OL actually blocking out on the move as if it were a zone play. What a novelty!!!! Offensive line blocking that matches the QB and RB movement on the fake?

    7. On all four play fakes, the running backs ran to the exchange point exactly like they were getting a hand-off, used their hands to fake like they were receiving the ball, and even did a stutter afterward (if appropriate) like they were deciding where to run. The one curious play is a fifth play fake where perhaps everyone knew it was a fake except the runner, because he did this despite nobody else, OL or QB, selling a fake.

    8. On all four play fakes, Mark Sanchez sprinted out to an exchange point that was not directly behind him, he turned his back to the defense, he stuck the ball out, and ducked his head during the fake exchange. On only one of the four fakes, did the ball not actually reach the runner's lap, which was probably a lack of chemistry between QB and RB on the track to the exchange point. But, everyone still got the details right on the movements.

While I'm a big Peyton fan there are many who still see him as the guy who usually fails in big spots. He never won at Tennessee. Other than the one year, Indy is usually a playoff bust. People see Brady as the guy who usually wins in their match-ups, etc. I have Peyton as the best QB in the game, but he has his critics. And if you look back before Peyton's SB win, there were a 100 times more critics. The point is that many people and coaches are wrong about players or see different things. So it is at least as likely that the coaching staff was wrong about benching Henne as it is that they were right. I'm not going to base what Henne is or isn't on the fact that they benched him.

IMO Henning has done a horrible job using the play fake in his play calling. Its not actually used as a fake. It doesn't affect the defense and it makes it more difficult for the offense and for Henne to execute. This is one way that Henning has set this offense up to fail. I think the coaching staff in general has done an extremely poor job of focusing on the details of the play action fake, not just with Henne but with everyone involved. I am really surprised that an offense that they seemed to want to be so run heavy uses the play action fake so poorly. As I watched the pieces this offense was going to have this year, I expected the play action plays to be one of the core things that they would make sure they did well. IMO not doing that was a grievous error.

The FO in New England is smart enough to scheme based on their talent instead of trying to change their talent to fit a scheme. Sure, they try to draft players who fit their team, but that system is so QB friendly it's unreal. If Henne played for the Pats he'd look like an All-Pro too. The amount of time that Brady has to throw is unreal and their passing game is nothing more than short, high percentage throws that are closer to being a long hand off than a pass. Now, of course, this type of play opens up WR's downfield on occasion and they will attempt those throws, but over Brady's career without Moss, his stats aren't very good in that area. For example, this season Brady's overall QBR is 105 and his comp % is 66. However, when he has throw the ball deep, 3rd and long (6+ yards), his QBR drops to 65 and his comp % falls to 57.

It's just another sign that really more than just Dan Henning probably need to be fired. I don't see how James Saxon can coach his running backs to not actually sell their fakes at all. I don't see how David Lee can coach Chad Henne to not execute some of the details with his fakes, regardless of whether he believes them necessary or not. I don't see how Dave DeGuglielmo can let his OLs get away with such lazy details on their play fakes.

And it all starts at the top. When I watched the Jets execute play-action, I saw two plays every time. I saw the play that they were faking, as if it were an actual play call. And then I saw the play that actually got executed. On Miami's play fakes, I see one play. I don't see two. And I think that's a difference in the way the plays are actually called. I believe that when the Jets are calling a play-action pass, they actually are calling a marriage of two plays. I get the feeling that in Miami they're calling a pass play and saying "plus fake". In fact one reason I got giddy about that Pat Cobbs play-action play was for the first time in a while I actually saw two plays. I saw what the play could have been, and what the play was. And even then, the details that the OL, QB and RBs got on that play weren't even close to what you regularly see from the Jets.
