I don't understand why everyone is so pro-Gruden. If you're paying that kind of money, you can easily get one of the better proven NCAA coaches. But this chatter really isn't anything that we havent seen when UM is looking for a new coach. This happens every time...
Good coach who elevates UM’s national profile. The ideal outcome from a Gruden hiring would be turning UM into USC without the NCAA violations.
I'm not sure how many "better proven NCAA coaches" they could get. You mentioned Chip Kelly a few posts back and I just don't see anyone like that leaving their own jobs even if it takes their current schools giving them more than they're currently getting. To me, Gruden is the best bet you could get right now. He would be an enormous recruiting tool, potentially better than anyone out there because of the ESPN celebrity he has become. He's also a very good coach that IMO fits much better in college than in the NFL. He would also not only bring instant credibility to the program, but he'd sell tickets immediately. Even if a guy like Chip Kelly were a reality, the average sports fan knows John Gruden's name. As great as Kelly is (and I'm a huge fan of his) not every average sports fan knows who that is.
I would jump up and down like a girl and drink my own pee if we got Gruden. That would be epic for recruitment. I'm even willing to make a video and put it on youtube
Sure, Gruden would bring more celebrity and notoriety as a coach. But does it matter? Gary Patterson built TCU into a national contender, recruiting in the backyard of Texas, Texas AM, etc. Someone like Patterson, or Chip Kelly, Chris Peterson, or Bobby Petrino, or Bielema have already proven that they have what it takes to build successful programs at schools that aren't traditionally powerhouses. Now you can say that those guys have no motivation to leave their current schools. In the case of Chip Kelly, you might have a point. He's in the PAC-10, and with USC falling, he probably wont want to leave. But for almost all the other guys I mentioned, UM offering $3.4M would be more than enough to take them away from TCU, or Boise, or Wisconsin, etc. They would all have a much better shot at a NC, they would all get more national attention, and they would definitely have the opportunity to get more talent. Has Gruden proven he can be successful at the NCAA level? Do we know he's willing to spend the requisite time on the road recruiting? Theres a lot more to it than just being recognized and having players want to come play for you. There will be players that Gruden will have to fight for, will he be able to win those players? Theres a lot of bull**** that goes with recruiting. Do we know that he won't be another NFL coach that tries to run too many plays in college? There are a lot more questions surrounding Gruden than a lot of other great coaches. I think Gruden is a great coach, and I wouldn't mind having him coach the Canes. But if you're going to shell out the type of money that Tressell, or Saban, or Stoops makes, then I would rather give that to someone who has proven they can build a program. ETA: All this assumes that the $3.4M figure I've been told is true. If they aren't willing to pay that, its a completely different landscape.
Yes. UM needs not just instant success, but a shot in the arm in the process. The proposed Gruden contract would pay him less than all three of those coaches. Stoops: $3.675 million per year. Tressel: $3.5 million per year. Saban: $4 million per year. The maximum reported offer to Gruden is $3.4 million per year. $3.2 million has also been batted around. Not sure what you’re complaining about, especially because it’s not really your money being spent. Unless you’re one of the few multi-millionaire donators that Donna Shalala is leaning on.
Yeah, this. I'm not sure that Gruden is the best pure coach we could hire, but he would attract the best talent in the nation and that would make up for a lot of deficiencies...plus, he's not going to be bad at all. It would be a huge win to get him on board.
By the way, Canesport has an update on Gruden. I can’t read it because I don’t have an account. They tweet as follows:
The team has more than enough talent to contend for a national championship next season. It doesn't necessarily need a shot in the arm, it just needs someone to turn that talent into wins. Gary Patterson, Bobby Petrino, or Chip Kelly would all clean house recruiting for Miami anyways. I'm not complaining (although I do have financial ties to UM), but my point is for that kind of money I would rather have Patterson, Peterson, Harbaugh, or a few other coaches. Don't get me wrong, I most certainly will be happy with Gruden, but he isn't at the top of my list for the $3-3.4M range.
I'd be all for a guy like Peterson or Patterson, but would they be willing to leave and would Miami still be willing to give them that kind of money? Part of the reason they can afford to offer that to Gruden is they know he'll sell tickets. That wouldn't necessarily be the case with one of these other names.
No, it doesn’t. That was the lesson of the 2010 season. This team is not as talented as people thought it was, primarily because Randy Shannon and his assistant coaches did not develop that talent. Talent development takes time: the Canes aren’t going to compete for a national title next year with this squad. Maybe an ACC title if the Shannon leftovers and freshmen are coached very well and step up. This is also a very mentally soft roster. That’s a bigger problem than just talent development. And I’d rather have Jim Harbaugh for less money, but I can’t complain one iota about Jon Gruden for 3 years. Can someone with a CaneSport account tell us what that linked article says?
Thats certainly a good point. But I think either of those coaches bring us an ACC title next year. Winning will fill the seats, and I would even be more confident in their ability to win next year over Gruden's. Only reason I mention guys like that is because of the ~$3M figure. That would be more than enough to get them away from their current schools IMO. And the more I think about it, the more TCU going to the Big East may actually drive Patterson away from there. UM is a top-10 job in college football.
I'd be extremely happy with guys like that, and I agree those guys would start winning and bring in fansn pretty quickly. I just somehow think they're longshots and I get the feeling the next step is someone like Jim Leavitt who's a good coach, but won't bring the return a guy like Gruden would.
Leavitt would be a terrible hire. He’s a decent coach, but it’s not like USF was hurting for talent; they rose to semi-prominence because they took the talented players who didn’t make the academic requirements at UM, UF, or FSU. Leavitt was not hurting for good players. I’d actually say some of those USF teams were better than anything Randy Shannon put together.
I wouldn't call him a terrible hire, but there are a lot of coaches I'd rather have than him. I also don't think he ever had more talent than Shannon, Shannon always had big time talent at Miami, they just did an extremely poor job of developing it.
Shannon’s poor player development is a given, but that doesn’t automatically mean Shannon’s rosters were more talented than Leavitt’s.
This is what I was afraid of: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports...-randy-shannon-already-affecting-1082479.html
Not surprising. Happens every time there’s a coaching change. But it’s fine, new coaches usually get some of those recruits back and make up the difference with new kids. Bridgewater is still committed, too.
It doesn't automatically mean that, but I believe it to be true. The Canes have been pretty loaded with talent during Shannon's tenure here IMO. Maybe not what it was 10 years ago, but still quite a bit of talent. IMO, the success of some of the USF players in the NFL should be a credit to Leavitt. Again though, he's not high on my list of coaches I'd want, just sayng I think he'll be up there for the Canes.
I really don’t agree that Shannon’s teams were brimming with talent. Not to say they were completely vacant of anyone worth a damn, but there were a lot of overrated players. Allen Bailey, for example. The next time he plays consistently well will be the first. He disappears too easily. I can’t think of many USF players who have had notable success in the NFL. George Selvie was supposed to be drafted higher than he wound up going. Jason Pierre-Paul went in the first round but he’s done nothing for the Giants. Who am I missing?
Jason Pierre-Paul had a pretty damn good game yesterday and has applied some pressure in the times he's played. You have to remember the guy is a rotational end right now but to say he's done nothing is not true. You forgot Nate Allen and Jerome Murphy who may turn into a solid player. He has talent, just needs coaching.
I realize he’s a rotational player on a defensive line already stocked with talent, but they wouldn’t have used a first round pick on him if they didn’t think he would be able to contribute immediately. And I haven’t seen him contribute. I don’t doubt that he had a good game, but every time I see the Giants I don’t see Pierre-Paul. Michael Strahan he ain’t. Maybe. Both are buried on their teams’ depth charts, much more so than JPP. Now that I think about it, wasn’t Leavitt fired because of recruiting violations?
And leavitt was fired for slapping a kid in the face. Which i dont believe. Iworked with the guy as a graduate assistant and never once saw him lose control on a player. But, i dont think Leavitt is the guy for miami though.
Grabbed a player’s throat, slapped him, and lied about it, according to ESPN. Yeah, that’ll get you fired. And that won’t get you hired at Donna Shalala’s The U.
Allen Bailey is probably going to be a top 20 pick this year. IMO, the reason some of those guys are "overrated" is because they were loaded with talent but not developed properly. Look at what guys like Sam Shields, Antonio Dixon, and Bruce Johnson have done since they got to the NFL. Here's a snippet from a Barry Jackson article from a week ago: IMO, that was the biggest issue I had with Shannon's tenure. He was a very good recruiter, but he chose a very poor staff that couldn't develop players properly. Part of me expects Ryan Hill, who was pretty bad at Miami, to go on to a solid NFL career.
You need to watch more closely because Pierre-Paul has done some good things, just not ridiculous like some expect. And how many players are Michael Strahan right out the gates? Come on Desides, you're better than this. Uhm, Nate Allen has started every game in Philadelphia.
By the way, I missed the beginning of the MNF game. Anyone who watched it, did they bring up the Miami possibility at all with Gruden?
I’m allowed to exaggerate comparisons to make a point. Maybe I do need to watch more Giants games, but the networks would rather force-feed me “treasures” like Cowboys and Vikings games. Has he? He’s listed as the backup on depth charts. Then a team is going to waste their first round pick. He and Hankerson should be 2nd round picks at best.
Not much....but it's something
Anyway we can hire Gary Patterson as HC and then Dana Holgorsen at OC? Yes I went there with Patterson again. Gruden's fine too but convince Holgorsen somehow to come to Miami.
