OK this front office has me totally baffled now! I don't understand their logic one bit here. Anderson is pretty damned good when blitzing. Carpenter was highly thought of coming out of college but man, if he's been having trouble cracking the starting lineup for two teams, he is sure the heck going to have trouble here. They really must be worried about their coverage units. I would have much rather they signed a solid Return man...Logan!
Fair enough...But I'd hardly classify him as a "playmaker". If he's that much of a playmaker, he'd start.
I'm just kind of bummed right now because these past few weeks have forced me to re think some things concerning this team..... this FO and our coach. I had been heading into this season more excited than I have been in forever and idk, it's just been tempered some what. And I don't think I'm alone in this...
Oz, Think of this, we all know what Dansby can do in coverage and what he can do blitzing. We also know what Crowder CAN'T do in coverage. Bobby Carpenter, for all his flaws, can cover as a linebacker. Now, in obvious passing situations (say 3rd and long), and knowing that we plan on attacking more up the middle this year with blitzes versus the outside like in years past, who do you think was blitzing and who do you think was covering when you have Dansby/Crowder on the field? Most likely, I think you could plan for Crowder to rush and Dansby dropping back in coverage and thus, offenses could most likely set their blocking schemes accordingly. If you sub in Carpenter in that situation, you now have some ambiguity and more versatility with regards to how you can use Dansby. Not saying that this will happen every time, but giving the offense a moment of hesitation could be the difference between a sack/int/incompletion and a first down conversion.
LOL we joke about it, but it kinda would be the straw that broke the camel's back this week when you think about it.
Good points but to me, I would have cut someone other than a Lb who is/was pretty good when blitzing from the outside and especially with all the unproven guys on the outside..
I agree but Detroit got Logan on waivers, we never had a chance to grab him. Hopefully were not in a bad enough spot to get first crack at cuts again, that was horrible.
This is a good pickup... some of you are acting like we just resigned Pat White... Well, I guess we all know who the new whipping boy is going to be. Charlie Anderson was getting paid a lot of coin for really never being the playmaker. Gives us a little flexibility in our nickel that Crowder and Dobbins can't provide. IMO Anderson was the fifth best OLB on the roster behind IAF, Misi, Wake and Moses.
Makes no sense to me. Wasn't Anderson supposed to be playing a lot of snaps this season? Now they bring in someone who needs to start from scratch. What the **** is going on here? SERIOUSLY
I wouldn't say I was surprised that Anderson was cut for Carpenter, they tried Anderson at ILB briefly, that didn't work out...Edds is gone for the season, they want another ILB that is adept at pass coverage....Carpenter fits the bill and he's a very good STer... I would have suspected QMoses would be the guy, but with Anderson's salary...this makes as much sense as any of the moves they've made in the last 48 hours...
upgrading a roster, and cutting some hefty unproportionate salary for young talent that can be developed by our people. what cuts are you dissapointed in ?
Clifton Smith is also on the market All Pro in 08, got cheap shotted in 09 and in 10 he had inflammation in one of his legs. Once Sparano grows tired of Cobbs being stopped at the 22 yd line, there will be changes made..
Spot on Sammie with a "ambiguity" tossed in for good measure. What I'm not understanding is the concept that we drafted Edds to do what Carpenter will do, namely play nickel ILB, play on ST, and we had no one who could do that as Folsom and Spitler washed out. Who else was supposed to do that job?
They are not upgrading. They are downgrading guys they think will not see much action and saving money.
Watching every single snap that Moses has ever had with our team.... No. he was not better than Charlie Anderson.
I Don't know that it's downgrading. I don't think they are making the team appreciably worse. Anderson has been on two teams, on the way to three. Carpenter has now been on three. Anderson has 122 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 6 seasons. Carpenter has 96 total tackles and 3.5 sacks in 4. If you can get essentially, the same player at a lower salary, I think you have to do that. Plus, we need ILBs more than OLBs at the moment.
yeah but remember we arent playing madden or fantasy football. This game is played with real dollars and if you can save a few million dollars, you do it. Correct me if I'm wrong but in another week we can sign higher priced veterans and their contracts wont be guaranteed. This is what you get with free agency. Our next shopping spree will occur when we can sign players for non guaranteed contracts. This is very good salary management
yes, thats correct Sec, were doing that over keeping overpriced old guys that for the most part, who were out of shape when we signed their already cut asses. Why are people sweatin Anderson, Douglas and Grant? were a much better team at this time than last year.
really, our special teams took a step back this offseason because of the people we lost. losing Charlie Anderson, if it improves our special teams, is okay by me.
Yeah, Wesley looked like he was more stupid than trying to be dirty but Smith got a second concussion and sat out the year. Not sure if he'll ever be the same....
I think we all knew this was going to happen eventually. The guy has been an unofficial member of the team since 2008.
Anderson Douglas and Grant were Veteran depth players that could start if needed and not see a huge drop off. These are the depth players needed to be a playoff team....so...thats where the concern is. Loosing the depth these guys offered gives cause for concern as to whether or not this administration felt we were a team that could compete this year.
Carpenter is being looked at for the A.J. Edds role I see. This is also big because Dansby is the only other linebacker that can be counted on in coverage. Misi might be another, but we don't know quite yet. But Dobbins and Johnson are admittedly one-dimensional, as is Moses. Crowder has been iffy here. And we won't even discuss Wake's shortcomings in coverage (not to mention he's not going to be covering anyone anyway). Basically, if Dansby were to be injured, we'd be in a heap of trouble in coverage. Carpenter mitigates that. I also feel he'll indeed get work behind Wake on the weakside.
While there are plenty of things I like about what they're doing with this team...... there's also some obvious mistakes that have that we are now having to sort out. At the forefront of this is the OL....... They made a monster investment and came out with nothing more than Jake Long. Carey is starting to look like he's on the downside of his career already and the rest are an interchangeable group of back ups ups and a rookie. By now the OL should be one of the strengths of the team, not it's biggest question mark. Not sure about the rest of you but that's situation I'm sweating the most right now. All in all we do have some nice pieces in place..... but it's starting to look like it might take longer to be where most expect us to be right now. We've just had too many misses. Missing leaves holes... leaves you churning the bottom of your roster looking for answers. I do like this team tho and I'm hoping if things go a little south in the beginning, fans will be patient and realize just how young this team actually is. Make the best of it and hope for some improvement in key areas.....anything else is gravy.
The Band of Brothers is back in effect JS: YouTube- Henry V - Band of Brothers I'd honestly hate to face this Phins team..we are going to punch teams in the mouth, over and over again..u heard it hear first.
If Jerry pans out like we hope, then 3/5 of our line is solidified. Incognito can also be an above average player. That just leaves the one deficiency. How many teams can you name that don't have 1 deficiency on their Oline?
I'm not sure what you mean by we have only Jake Long on the offensive line. Carey is still good. John jerry will be a beast in two or three years. Berger and Grove are both quality centers and Incognito has proved he can play so long as he doesnt go Charles Bronson on someone. I think you put too much stock in preseason games. They are utterly meaningless. Offensive lines always look like crap in preseason. Not just here but on every team. Go to ten different message boards and I'll bet you at least eight of them are complaining about their offensive lines
Damn Cav members...charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whose coming with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 2010 Sparanophins are the team that the sum is greater than it's parts...we coming...once more into the Breach Brothers, once more into the Breach!!!!
That OL is absolutely not the line we paid for...... that line would be unquestionably one of the best in the league. I like Jerry and I'm optimistic that he'll pan out but beyond that... it's mostly Jake and everybody else. Oh and I think Vernon Carey is physically breaking down and while still a decent player, we'll be looking for a RT very soon. Ricky led the league in rushing once behind worse....... so we'll see I guess.
I do like most of the starters but they better pray they get a pass rush or they will be swinging and missing alot...
OLB 1. Wake 2. Misi 3. Moses 4. Francis 5. Anderson ILB 1. Dansby 2. Crowder 3. Dobbins 4. Johnson 5. Anderson We're talking about a 7th year, 5th string linebacker, who's been passed on the depth chart by 3 undrafted free agents, a CFL castoff, a career backup, and a rookie who's never played linebacker in his life. Oh and he was set to make 2.2 million this year. C'mon people. If Charlie's release worries you, then then give me a call. I've got some blizzard insurance to sell you.
