The injuries to Allen, Merling, Edds, Gardner, and Haynos have hurt the team. Lighting up the waiver wire has not. We got rid of guys, some older, who were not going to play all that much. We added players, some younger, who are not going to play all that much. I do question the Anderson for Carpenter trade off but, have a feeling we may add a vet OLB. I also would have liked to keep Ness to the practice squad. Aside from that, I believe we are just about the same team as before the cuts. Opinions?
It boils down to the following. Remember, the Dolphins were a financial failure last year. Ross is a businessman WELL before he is a football fan/owner. Cutting Grant, Douglas and Anderson saved him 5.7 million in salary (minus the minimum contracts doled out to their replacements). Putting Will Allen on IR saved him millions more (insurance pays that out). Say what you want about Ross, but he is a businessman. Those guys don't try to make losing money a habit if they can help it.
Agreed. And that is the delicate balance that Bill Parcells has to achieve as VP of Football Operations. Putting the best football team together talent wise, with the resources given to him and making sure he respects the business side of the NFL on top of it. This could either backfire, or end up being a very shrewd move by someone who realizes that spending close to 6 million dollars on three bottem end defensive players who aren't being relied on to contribute much of anything physically for a team that lost money last year, and thus don't warrant the pricetag associated with them.
Adalius anyone? If we got rid of Anderson for an ILB, I can envision us picking up Adalius. He's still a FA after all this time so he has to be cheap.
My opinion is that this will only effect the tail end of the roster with regards to turning over salaries. A lot of the losses were tied up in renovations and upgrades to the stadium if I am not mistaken, so chances are, Ross should see a profit this year (depending on how well the team does, of course). But he still is going to try and recoup some of his losses from last year.
We don't know that anything has impacted us negatively or positively guys. Lets wait until we have 3-4 games under our belts before slitting our wrists
I highly doubt that Parcells, Ireland and Sparano sat down in a room with a pencil, paper and calculator and said..."Ok, so if we cut Anderson, Grant and Douglass, we'll save.....uuhhh, $5.7M...yeah, that's the ticket...Hey, Mr Ross, look what we did !!" Conversely, Ross didn't come to Parcells and say "Hey, if you cut these three low rung guys, I can recoup some of my losses from this year, so let's go do it..." First off, Parcells would be looking at the cost of keeping guys vs. letting guys go, but primarily he's looking at what he can do to improve the team. These moves were made because, collectively, the Troika think the product on the field will be better because of them...not solely because they are cheaper alternatives... Now, the question is "Were they wrong or were they right ??" That can't be answered until we start playing real games again....
I think it is foolish to think that money didn't factor into these decisions. When you weigh how much those three were set to make versus how much they were realistically going to contribtue from a performance standpoint, you have to think that, in the end, the results they expected to get from them was not worth the price tag they had to pay. Was it the only factor? No. But it is a big one. You can't overlook the dollars and cents of this company. You have to try very hard to lose money in the monster that is the NFL. The reality is, these money saving moves aren't factoring into the top end of the roster persay. Ross is clearly okay with spending to get better (Marshall and Dansby being perfect examples of this), but he also trusts Bill to know that the difference in performance output between Charlie Anderson and Bobby Carpenter is closer than their paychecks would indicate.
All of this Sturm and Drung is more or less over Roster spots #48-#53. The bottom of the roster dude, these players are a bit like Bic lighters or wooden matches.
many moves...yes, little impact....absolutely dont know yet, couldnt sign ness to PS because he got picked up by seattle
they may bring douglas back aftwer week one so they didn't have to guarantee him his salary for the year. of course i thought thats whats they were doing with david martin also.
