Come on now.. The article does sort of bolster my belief that a Scout has to be part talent evaluator, part private investigator, the fmr GM mentioned the Scouts had to buddy up with the "background" people, the ones outside of the normal Football program. Janitors, Maintenance personnel, equipment managers etc. I'd bet the local bar managers or bartenders would also be a fount of information aside from "he's a good kid" stuff.

IDK bro, I dont like the college game at all, I guess it has alot to do with being where I am, BC is the best team, and they arent good compared to the nation as a whole.....the BCS has made it entirely not fun to watch...remember that Okla/Bosie St game, was probably the best college game I ever saw, and they refuse to put mid-major in the title game...it is all obviously for the money the college game.....there are 300+ teams in Div 1, that makes for ALOT of avg players....ahhhh lack of pro style offenses, more often guys that are superstars in college dont add up in the NFL.....I like the speed and tempo of the NFL better........ I respect it, how can you not, the stadiums, the kids, the tradition, thats all cool, but I would take a Det thanksgiving day NFL game anyday over some college game....
Boston College is pretty good IMO. They coach up some very good offensive lineman. They've got arguably the best player in the nation, Mark Herzlich, on their team. Yeah, the BCS does screw it up but its still fun to watch IMO. A lot of guys out there busting their *** and they aren't getting paid for it. Not yet at least. Regarding pro style offenses, there are some. I think the college game gives people a 'heads up' on what's going to happen at the next level in some time. A lot of the college stuff that coaches do translates to the NFL. I can actually think of three quality NFL coaches (or former NFL coaches) that spend every summer on college campuses learning and implementing the stuff they learn into their own playbook. Jon Gruden is one, Monte Kiffin is two and Bill Belichick is three. IMO college football needs to be given a chance by some. It's loads of fun to watch and I learn a lot more from college coaches than NFL coaches. I like the defensive side of the ball quite a bit and pay the most attention to it so I learn a lot from college. They have base defenses which the NFL really doesn't. I talked to a high school coach about this and he made a great point; NFL defenses aren't really base defenses, they are concepts. There are so many things used that its tough to really get into details. College coaches use defenses like the 4-2-5, 3-3-5, 4-4, etc. as base defenses and it is a good start for people wanting to learn basics IMO. Then you have teams that are super simple but are so effective on defense, like Iowa. They are probably the simplest defense out there. No blitzing, you show spread, they just align their OLB's wider. They run Cover 2 and Cover 4 most of the time. Some coaches laugh it off because its so simple but they are a damn good defense. And the funny thing is you have coaches who spend long nights trying to stop spread offenses and all Iowa does is stick to fundamentals and basics. Last, I think the atmosphere is awesome. The fans are cool. I have been to two college games in my life. I went to Phillip Rivers final college game and it was awesome. In January, I went to the All Star game and it was awesome. I actually went with CKparrothead from here. Very bright guy and much nicer than he's given credit for haha.
I'll be there this year. I am going to go to Mobile too. I have too, can't miss that. Now, the harder part will be getting wifey to O.K. the Combine trip.

Football doesnt need to be all encompassing. I understand that you would look at it as more then just a job and believe I understand that because no one loves sports more then me that I have met but life has much more meaning then just pads and helmets bro. You can have a wife or a GF and other stuff you enjoy and its probably healthier to have that distraction away from the field. Just saying, you probably dont want to die alone one day bro. Even though i love the college game I do at times get frustrated with some of the gimmicky offenses and the like. However a lot of times you will see things in the college game that are more innovative and different then you see in the pro game. You saw the proliferation of the spread in college long before you saw in the pro's for example. I still like the pro game more but I like the college game a lot even though I get annoyed at times with it. I would also say that the environment at a college game is especially awesome. Ive been to tons of both college and NFL games and there is such a difference. I went to school at the University of South Carolina and I remember pregaming the night before, going down to the park lot at 8AM for a &PM game just because it was on national TV. The first year I was there Carolina was coming off an 0-11 season in Lou Holtz's first year and after they beat New Mexico State the prior week to snap a 21 game losing streak they beat Georgia who at the time was like #6 or 9 in the country. The fans were going nuts when Quincy Carter threw 4 interceptions that game. Myself and a bunch of friends walked out of the stadium with the goalposts that day. You could never do stuff like that for a pro game because its too corporate.
Oklahoma vs Florida State.....it was played Jan 3rd, 2001 IIRC. Great game, and the atmosphere was just insane. I have never seen a stadium like that. I thought people were going to fall out of the second deck. Oklahoma fans had just suffered through some bad times for them, OU had an outmanned team in terms of talent, but there was something special about that team. The loudest event I have been a part of. Just ****ing nuts.
