As a Met fan, I don't want Lee, the price is too high.

Would I be upset if we got him? No.

I would rather try and get Zambrano from the Cubs on the cheap and see if he gets his head on straight.

Him and Perez talking in the dugout would be priceless!

My parents were at the Graig Nettles amazing D game victory of the 78 WS.....

Unfortunately, to date, my only WS game @ Stadium was the Dodgers '81 game 6 clincher....boooo! I remember us going up 2-0, knowing I had game 6 tickets and worried about a sweep....so I was rooting for Game 6 to occur so I could watch Yanks win it all in person.....etc......well suffice to say, I learned my lesson about wishing and hoping based on tickets, etc....now I root for fastest road to victories and tickets be damned....agggghhhhh!

I love Jeet...LOVE him, the face of baseball, and modern sports for "doing it right" for that matter.....We all know he wants to win championships, he has a realistic shot of winning 2 or more for sure with Lee, I dont see how he doesnt say he would take less.....give him stake in the franchise, he has made it known he wants to own a team someday....who better to run the Yanks than Jeet, thats like a dream come true.....

I hate to say it, I think Mo hangs it up this year, very sad, he could very well be consider the MVP in all of sports for the last decade plus...God help the guy who takes over his role....Papelbon?? hahaha can u imagine? that stupid fist pump has he blows a 98 MPH by little Dusty??? I love Pedroia btw....

Montero could be one of those....thus getting Lee for him is no-brainer.

Keeping Lee off opposing team that could be a threat to #28 has a play as well.

As does the ability to move one of the 6 to the bullpen potentially....or go 6 man rotation for remainder of season.....or trading for bat, or bullpen arm, etc, etc, etc....lots of options. Win/Win.

You just proved my point....Mo will come thru, the guy is a witch...Cliff Lee is somebody I would trade a high prospect for...the guy's career era is 3.88 or something like that in the AL mostly...he is legit as they come...

The Mets would definately go after him, they have too...

the Mets are going after him, but I don't think they should sell the farm for him since he will sign with the Yanks anyway in the off season.

no no I mean I think they will go after him hard in the offseason, and have the cash, and willingness to get it done.....Lee in that ballpark is a 20 game winner all day...

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that Zach McAllister will go to the Mariners along with Jesus Montero and David Adams in a Cliff Lee trade.

McAllister has seen his stock drop as he's climbed the ladder. He's held his own as a 22-year-old in Triple-A this year, going 7-5 with a 4.45 ERA, but his strikeout rates and groundball rates have kept declining as he's advanced. While many looked at him as a potential third starter a couple of years ago, we've always been pretty skecptical.

Michael Pineda could be called up to make his major league debut in place of Cliff Lee against the Yankees on Friday.

The 21-year-old Pineda was slated to start for Triple-A Tacoma tonight, but he's no longer listed as the probable.

Wow now Joel Sherman is reporting the Yankees are NOT getting Cliff Lee as there are concerns about David Adams ankle and apparently a mystery team has offered a better package of players. Interesting. If I had to guess who the team is I'd say it's Tampa Bay, but just a guess.

    The clocks ticking.

.....either way, come on Hughes, you need to bounce back, work ahead, put hitters away with 2 strikes, and most importantly, end innings quickly and cleanly when you get the 2 outs.

Snap out of it man....my Fantasy squad needs you!

Now word is Texas is the favorite and there's a rumor they're including Justin Smoak in a Lee deal. Should be an interesting rest of the day/night until the 10pm game.

I cant believe texas would give up smoak for a 3 month rental. He is being compared to a young teixiera. Switch hitting power first baseman dont come along that often.

The mariners have beasically taken cash's offer and shopped it to other teams. I dont think seattle was ever really interested in the Yanks package. They pulled this crap with washburn a few yrs ago. They are greedy SOB's.

What's funny is with Tex's MLB/money issues and ownership...Tex has issues with acquiring Lee.

No problem, its the best site for MLB trades/free agency. They called the teixeira to the yankees 45 min before espn did. They have great sources.

I think some other teams around the league who are subsidizing the rangers right now, are going to be pissed about taking on lee's salary. especially for only 3 months. there is no chance they will sign him in free agency. And, for Justin Smoak....wow

The New York Post reports that Mariners starter Cliff Lee has been traded along with reliever Mark Lowe to the Texas Rangers in exchange for 1B Justin Smoak and three prospects. Lee had been in limbo all day. The scheduled starter for Friday's game against the Yankees, there had been a report that he was on the verge of being dealt to the Yanks prior to the deal falling through.

Well, its great for Tex from a rental (if they ultimately have more faith that C. Davis turned it around in the minors over Smoat as 1B need) and they get the Stud rental leading up to the ownership change to make a splash for balance of season and into playoffs if this works out (just like MIL and CC). It could hurt them depending on the other 3 prospects too (somewhat like MIL) but the playoffs would be a big thing for them, the way it was for MIL.

So be it.....they will get the draft picks when he leaves via FA. Rangers dont have cash right now (although they did get $2.5M from SEA to offset Lee salary), but they have a heck of a farm system. I would have to wager one of the 3 will be a Catcher based on what Seattle's needs are.

Davis has been a monster down in Triple-A since being sent down earlier this season. He is batting .354 with 10 homers and 56 RBI and will almost certainly return to an everyday role for the Rangers following the All-Star break.

Wow, now this shocks me more than anything.....no C?

edit: Hindsight 20/20...since Montero perhaps was really shaping up to be 1B/DH guy in Catcher by name only.....getting true 1B in Smoak is same. So maybe C is a smoke-screen or something they would grab down the line....but boy, Rangers have a slew of C in farm system that could have been plucked for Lee. Weird.

Seattle is throwing in some cash to go along with the deal, I believe that Texas only has to pay 1.5 million of his remaining 4 million for the rest of the year. Texas does have a little payroll flexibility so it's not like they can't take on any payroll, just not a lot.

Well you don't really know if those reports of Seattle wanting a catcher are true and even if they were like you said Montero isn't really a catcher and maybe they were targeting a specific catcher and couldn't get him. It does look odd that Seattle didn't take a catcher back from Texas but Texas' catchers of the future (Saltalamacchia, Teagarden and Ramirez) have been pretty much busts and have very little value right now as Saltalamacchia is having problems throwing the ball, think Rube Baker in Major League, Teagarden can't hit a lick and Ramirez isn't a very good defensive catcher.

BDH....Hughes got you your win bro! Jeet batting 273 ouch...

I wouldnt have cared either way, I was ready to part ways with Monterio, to have Lee, but the lack of an extension talk made me nervous, so if in the end we get to keep Monterio, and make a run at him in the winter, its gravy to me...

Watch every crackhead team to going to want Monterio now, the way they did Hughes, and Joba a few years back, cuz the Yankees were willing to give him up for Lee.....I wouldnt trade Monterio for anything except a top tier pitcher like Lee...

Why would a lack of an extension make you nervous? It's the Yankees, like you said they will just go out and buy him. If they wanted Lee they will get him, just like they did with CC, they can just give him a blank check and let him fill in the numbers.

1st, RIP Bob Sheppard. A true legend. I am interested to see how the Yanks pay their respects to him next home game. What ever it is, I am sure it will be nothing less than classy! Last Person he introduced live was Andy Pettitte.

2nd, I am glad we did not get Lee. We don't need him. Our starting pitching right now is the best in the League. The Yankees are perfectly content in winning with the starters they have now. And as one fan put it, it's no fun. In the playoffs I don't want to have the Yankees be all but guaranteed win the world series. I wan't to be scared. I want to think, we can possibly lose. Lee is unnecessary right now. Work on bullpen. Which brings me to the third thing i have to say.

JOBA SUCKS. Terrible, I don't know whats wrong with him, but hes not a very good pitcher. He cost us so many games this year and cost Vazquez a win he deserved.

Speaking of Vazquez, the guy is pitching GREAT right now. Yeah he had a rough start of the season, but Yankee fans can't hate on him! Vazquez is my favorite pitcher right now behind Pettitte just because everyone hates him with out a good reason. I find my-self rooting for him more then any pitcher on the Yankees besides Pettitte. I hope he keeps this up!

Because there is always a possibily of him not signing with the Yankees, and if they gave up those players, and didnt get him to sign an extension, and he left, that would have sucked...

Also Bob Sheppard deserves his own thread...

When/who was the last player the Yankees wanted that they didn't get because he signed with another team for more money/years?

If the Yankees want someone they go out and get him by offering him more money than any other team. Just look at Sabathia, he had reservations about coming to NY but the Yankees just blew him away with their deal (I think they offered him something like 50 or 60 million more than other teams did) and he couldn't refuse to pass up that much more money, they will do the same with Lee (or anyone really) if they want the player bad enough.

Without a good reason? Without a good reason....JT nothing needs to be said beyond 2004. Perhaps the Biggest Reason in the HISTORY of reasons from a Yanks perspective.

    Without a good reason? Please!

He is fine in regular season, but personally, I dont think I want him to sniff the mound as a starter or bullpen guy come playoffs....shipping him off long before playoffs to remove all doubt would sit just fine with me.
