As for Manning, remember, he had a choice between Manning or Leaf. There is a reason Polian picked the right player.

 

Not really Alen, in all three stops he acquired then developed a young Qb who had success quickly, Kelly, Collins, Manning, he always finds overlooked talent, from the USFL,CFL, Expansion Draft or UDFa's, and I mean starters in playoff games, and it happens everywhere he has been.

Rarely, if ever misses on a #1 pick, that also happens everywhere he has been.

 

I'm not saying he's not worthy of a top GM award, I'm just saying he's had luck too. Every winning situation has luck. If you asked Bill Walsh that, he'd tell you the same IMO. I've read his books and he's said it.

 

What eliminates luck is reproducible results using the same methods, for example Walsh's ability to develop Qb's, that boils down to a skill at designing a system.

What has me psyched is Irish is the same sort of GM, like Polian he misses on mid rd picks, but later picks and #1's he hits on, ditto finding overlooked talent.

 

Not necessarily. You develop QB's but you're going to have luck whilst developing him. There will be certain situations that will make you scratch your head but they work out because it just happened that way.

 

So when is our pick from the Raptors good for? Is it next year? I think they might have a good chance to have a high lotto pick next year.

If they miss the playoffs in 2011, 2012, 2013, and just so happen to win the lottery and end up with the #1 selection in 2014.... guess who is picking Dwyane Wade's future replacement/next franchise player? We're set up so beautifully, especially if we keep that pick. With Bosh gone now, that pick is PURE GOLD. They're doomed for a good 5 years. That's a sure fire top 10 pick, IMO.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I've actually pondered this scenario.. Bosh finds out the Heat rejects a sign and trade, gets pissed because we are withholding his money, and reneges on the deal... Neither Wade nor Bosh have signed a binding contract, correct?

I'm not sure if he's missed on any quarterbacks. However, that's not the point. There is luck in winning situations. I've read Bill Belichick saying that, I've read Bill Walsh saying that, I've read college coaches saying that, I've talked to high school coaches who have said it. I've read debates between high school coaches about it and in the end, they've said a part of every winning situation is luck, coaching and the athletes who are out there playing the game. It's mostly the athletes but they've said coaching plays a role in it as well as luck to a lesser degree.

Although all this probably means is Wade's going to Universal (Harry Potter!) and Bosh is in Dallas, let's speculate anyways!

I agree that this is a great signing.

Having some old guys isn't bad when you have some good young guys too. O'Neal isn't really cutting into any young guys' time. He's cutting into Garnett's minutes - which should go down regardless- and to a lesser degree, Rasheed Wallace's.

Doc Rivers also does a good job of keeping the old guys fresh for the playoffs. They just coasted through the regular season. They were better on the road than at home during the regular season, so homecourt isn't a must for them in the playoffs.
