My guess is that SAS probably did have good reason but that Lebron has been kind of waffling. I would bet that at times Lebron was all gung ho about forming the super friends and was indeed leading the recruiting bandwagon and an hour later he's all wracked with guilt about leaving Cleveland and saying he would stay. That's why you have so many definitive, conflicting reports. If I had to guess right now Lebron is between Miami and Cleveland. He'll take the visits and may even be enthused about Chicago, NY, Dallas and NJ for an hour or even a day, but in the end it will be Miami or Cleveland. I would handicap it at 70% Cleveland and 25% Miami (the other 5% can be split among the other four teams). The reason I say Cleveland is b/c I don't think Lebron will have the stones to leave and be the bad guy in his hometown even if it may mean he never gets a championship.

I'd agree with this, but that's not really what lmeister was getting at. He's saying that SAS is flat-out making things up, not that LeBron is going back and forth.

My guess is that if LeBron is conflicted, it's because he's trying to justify to himself leaving Cleveland, which means he's already decided to do it.

Honestly it wouldn't break my heart if LeBron ultimately didn't come here. I was never expecting us to be a serious contender for him in the first place. Would it be wonderful if he did? Of course. But it wont make or break what we're trying to do which is upgrade the roster. We dont need to go for broke like the Knicks, Bulls and Nets are doing, but of course if we can get all three top FAs then Riley will find a way to do it. But realistically speaking we're lucky if we even land just one of the top FAs. At the end of the day though, Lebron is going to either resign with Cleveland(which is what I've always thought he was going to do) or come here, which is still pie in the sky thinking even at this point.

I would be shocked if LeBron went to Miami. Wouldn't be good for the NBA. The NBA needs someone in NYC, whether that be LeBron, Joe Johnson, Amare, I'm not sure.

I don't think LeBron knows where hes going. He's a business man. He wants to see what these teams will pitch to him. He's not going to stay in Cleveland because he feels guilty. He's going to go to the team which can best help him achieve his goals.

Wrong. The NBA has survived just fine with the Knicks sucking for the past decade or so.

Well if winning is a goal, and playing on the best team in NBA history is a goal, he should come here.

I'm really tired of the assumption that a sports league needs its New York-based teams to play well in order to succeed. It's regional arrogance.

What the NBA needs is a clash of the titans, '90s style. Michael Jordan won six rings but he did it against strong competition, and a lot of people still think the talent the NBA had in the early to mid 90s was the league's golden era. A clash of the titans--the big three in Miami, a strong Orlando, a resurgent Chicago all fighting it out for the right to take the trophy from Kobe Bryant--is the sort of thing that help put basketball back in the headlines.

Which headline would be more interesting to the casual sports fan? "Knicks lose six-game series, take second round playoff exit" or "Miami steamrolls Chicago in ECF sweep, ready to fend off Lakers threepeat"? The answer is pretty obvious to me.

if lebatard's tweeted trade of bosh for beasley, chalmers and anthony goes through, then i'm guessing there's around $4 million left to give to somebody else.

the heat needs around 1.7 million more to sign the three maxes. the contracts that would be off the books are:

    beasley for around 4.9 million
    chalmers for around .9 million

5.8 - 1.7 to give for third max = roughly 4.1 million left

I don't think SAS was making things up (this time anyways). Too many others reported the same thing (not just repeated it) so IMO it's much more likely that it was Lebron who was waffling.

I hope you're right about the conflicted thing. IMO he wants to stay in Cleveland for all the reasons except winning. I think winning, more than anything, is the best thing for Lebron Inc. And creating a super friends team with Wade and Bosh provides the best chance of that. I think his decision will show whether he really is 'all about winning'.

I completely agree. A dynasty is more compelling than anything except two dynasties. The best thing for the NBA would be if Miami created a super team that claimed a few titles and then another team followed suit. Then these two dynasties stayed viable for a decade or so and battled it out in historic fashion.

The problem with the NBA is that there are too many teams. If there were less teams... more would look like the Trynasty... which would be great for the sport. As you said rafael, watching teams like that battle it out is when basketball really gets interesting to watch. No one wants to watch 1 star and a bunch of scrubs...

I think the team count is fine. The problem is that a lot of teams are poorly run or find themselves in bad markets, like the Clippers. But the NBA has done a good job of capitalizing on markets that MLB and NFL haven't, like Portland and San Antonio.

Though I do think the Clippers should just pack up and move to Seattle.

Well I trust the validity of your source, but he seems to think that Beasley being traded is unlikely b/c Riley likes Beasley. He does say that Beasley will be included if it's absolutely necessary, but seems to imply that it's unlikely. My guess (and it's nothing more than that) is that it will be necessary and therefore it's not unlikely. Does that make sense?

    Yes.

IMO, and what I got from my source is that in a Perfect world (this is not) Riley keeps beasley. But as soon as he is faced with dumping him to get a guy like Bosh..I think he does it.

BTW...Being reported that Toronto has shot down Chicago completely on trying to pawn Deng to them in a S&T. The scuttlebutt has been that Bosh has been pushing the S&T drum...so that clears the deck for us.

Man..you hate to talk like this, but it really looks like a formality.

    Something to watch.......

Watch Riley in these Sign and Trade negotiations.

The assets I would think he would seek to protect are:

    Mike Beasley
    Torontos unprotected Lotto pick.

Hey, how much is Brendan Haywood going to command?

If we got Wade/Bosh/Gay... would there be enough left over for Haywood as well or no?

I'd rather just get Lebron and not worry about other scenarios lol

We could play 5 against 3 and win 60 games with that trio.

Haywood with Haslem on a home town discount for a year? :D

Seriously though, I think I'd have to take Haywood, no? I mean, Haslem would be coming off the bench w/ Bosh... and Haywood would be our starting center.

    Starting Center > Backup PF

    Chalmers
    Wade
    Gay
    Bosh
    Haywood

    I'll ride with that...

Yes. ****em'. Play hardball..tell Bosh to buck up and if you want to be here..leave the 6th year behind or at the very least threaten to do it. let's keep our player assets. Deal them ONLY when we have to.

    Let's ponder for a second...Pat Riley's Genius.

Pat Riley had an asset (Shawn Marion) that was set to have an expiring contract in 2009.

He realized that the best Free Agent summer was going to be 2010 and geared the team for that offseason.

To do that..he traded Marion to TORONTO (The home of one of the most sought after Free Agents in 2010 ...Bosh) got JO, Moon, who expired in 2010 and got a 1st round pick that is turning into one helluva chip with every season the Raptors miss the playoffs. In the process...he forced Toronto into the 2009 Free Agent market and they blew their money on Hedo Turkoglu.

Now, we come full circle...and Riley might end up turning Shawn Marion into..Jermaine Oneal, Jamario Moon, 1st round lotto pick and Chris Bosh.

If a Sign and Trade is required...the heat might end up giving back the pick the Raptors screwed themselves with. Brilliant.

Yes...Pat Riley is good at this. REAL GOOD AT THIS.
