WEll, about what one would expect, not thrilled with C McCoy not being mentioned, but there are a number of possibilities why he may not be on that list.
Nah bro, we got Chris Clemons... Yep, you heard me right, the Chris Clemons... and nope, not Cleo Lemon...
Veteran Tim Dobbins, acquired in the draft-day trade with San Diego: “Tim’s a good football player. When we got him in the draft weekend we pulled up some film just to refresh our memories about him. Instinctive player. He’s got a nose for the ball. In my opinion he’ll be a very, very good addition to our team. They haven’t had a lot of depth here at inside linebacker. So here’s a guy who has started NFL games and played a lot. In our minds he’s an excellent get.” We will see if they give the signal calling to Dansby if Channing can hang with Dobbins.
Did Sheridan subliminally say that Dobbins is a quality depth player? There are a lot of people that say he will start.
my point being did our LB coach almost tell us Dobbins is a backup. Talked about how he is a good football player, played a lot of football, good addition and depth. that is how i read it anyways.
I read that he is at least that bro. He used three very good in there. I can't wait for camp to kick off.
Me too. Might add IMVHO our best addition at LB this offseason aside from Dansby is likely Bill Sheriden.
That's how it sounded to me. First Ireland and now the LB coach talk about Dobbins as depth. I think it's only fans who are saying he may be a starter.
scares me if Crowder is penciled in as the starter but Dobbins will get some time loved what Sheridan said about Misi and his pass rush abilities could be he might have been underestimated in that area would love love to know the skinny on Crowder....
I think Crowder will actually play better in a limited role with less responsiblity. I never saw him as a leader. Playing in Dansby's shadow could do wonders for his career.
Crowder was a starter last year ... and the 'alleged' leader of the defense, so they aren't going to come out and say during OTAs that Dobbins is sending him packing ..... what would be the benefit there - Crowder demanding a trade and a whole lot of other crap ... just don't need it right now. i think he is very happy with the Dobbins pick up, and we'll see how camp shakes out. i am not a Crowder fan, and won't be sorry to see him go .... but now is the wrong time to show your hand -- you gotta wait til the pads come on, and see what we really have.
Imho Crowder has to know that with his injury, he is losing ground to Dobbins and Edds, new defense, new terminology, new assignments. Crowder cannot show the staff he can handle those things when he is not practicing them.
Both have questions, but lber is more important in this scheme, especially with all the young and new guys we have on the D. If you think about it, Misi could/probably will start. Edds will contribute a lot in pass coverage downs, Dansby is new, Dobbins is likely to give Crowder a run for his money, Anderson could be starting at either olb position because of his experience and Wake is still a work in progress. Throw in Spitler and McCoy who both have some potential and you've got a Heinz 57 group there but no real 'standouts' at OLB. FS has questions as well, but the engine that makes this D work will be the lbers...
I think I've figured out why Sparano values Charlie Anderson so highly. He is a 3 down Lb who can play inside or outside and has some coverage skills, that means he can play nickel Lb or start at either side of the formation and put his hand down as a DE. Sparano loves players who can do those things and I'd expect he could fill the Haggans role, or DE on the nickel rush line depending on Koa Misi's performance. I'd hoped he could develop like Tully Banta Cain, but TBC showed more at the point in his career where Anderson is currently.
Crowder played well as a starter the year before when, unlike last year, he wasn't playing injured. In fact, I would say that he played better than Dobbins has ever played and I like Dobbins. Both Dansby and Crowder are penciled in as the starters b/c they are the better players.
Actually Rafi, I looked into that claim about Crowder's 08 season, he had one great game against the Texans, several poor to average games against teams such as the Jets, and had his best games at the end of the season against poor teams such as SF and KC: Crowder 08: http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2008&surn=C&playerid=2287&group=6 Dobbins 09: Dobbins had two bad games, one against the Phins, the other against the Redskins.
Full participation by Crowder today: Omark is reaching there, if anything the OTA's are the staffs chance to whittle down rather than pencil in, that is the Shawn Murphy Law. Could apply to Chris Clemons as well.
Also I believe that Dobbins signed a one year tender with the Chargers before the trade, so he will be playing lights out for a multi year deal.
Well, one thing we know about Channing Crowder is, he rarely starts all 16 games, as in that has happened once in his career, so Dobbins will have some run as the ILB if things hold to form.
Absolutely, remember back in the day as soon as a player was cut a thread would pop up "Sign Muckenfutz now!"? This year some of the holdovers from 07-08 and 08-09 are firmly on the bubble, some have actual talent as well, but our depth has improved that much. For me, that kick returner job just is fascinating to contemplate.
Better to be working. That is sort of the last update until TC opens in August, officially school is out for summer as it were.
I'm not sure why you said "actually" as that implies a correction, since what I see is Dobbins had more poor games and fewer good games. Dobbins had no great games. In fact, Crowder had 5 games that season that were better than Dobbins best game. So by the comparison you just posted, what I said was completely accurate in that Dobbins has never played as well a healthy Crowder.
IMVHO, I do not see the positives in Crowders game to warrant a starting position in this league...I think ive been as critical of his game as anyone I know, for a long time, however, If iam wrong, I will be the first to admit it. I just don't see the explosiveness, speed, quickness, and most glaringly, lack of physical strength needed to be an above average player. Him not being able to run for 3 months on that foot does not make feel any better that he has improved in those dept's, which imo is essential for a player to get better at this game. I know he said that he's not goin anywhere this offseason, and that he's going to work out every morning til training camp... well,.lets hope this is the year we see some sort of physical improvement..
Honestly i dont care if everyone on the defense rotates positions every play as long as they get the job done, it doesnt matter who they are.
