    - He's the QB that wasn't

    - He's the RB that wasn't

    - He's the WR that wasn't

.....and now they have told him to bulk up and get bigger - which he did during the off-season. What in G-d's name is the plan for this guy on this team?

They must have a use for him or they wouldn't have told him to gain so much muscle......anyone care to speculate..????

    :confused1:

This guy has to be the biggest mystery in the NFL!

I don't think they have a QB spot for him, and the ordered muscle gain has me thinking RB? Could they be grooming him to be Ronnie Brown's replacement down the road? The wildcat is custom made for this guy because he is so multi-talented. I know it sounds nutz but could this be the answer to this riddle?

As small as he is gaining muscle probably doesn't automatically rule out he won't be on the QB depth chart this year. But yeah, who knows what he will or won't be doing this season.

I know he's not very rugged and probably wouldn't make it as a RB but, I am totally stumped with this walking question mark. He's like the extra part to a model that doesn't fit anywhere.

I would not mind a bit if White wound up on the IR for 2010.

If not, then he had better be all about 'Run Pat, Run" because he will not show more as a throwing Qb than Thigpen.

If you were in PW's shoes and your Head coach is comparing your competition to a pro bowl Qb, and your work to "Qb 101" stuff, how comfortable would you be?

Now PW can run the ball at a high level, if he can pass respectably well, he can stick..but he has to show as a WC player he can do more than Thiggy.

Otherwise, off to 'somewhere' for a conditional 4th rd pick.

Could they be grooming him to be our red-zone QB? our 3rd down QB? our change of pace RB/WR? Someone had better figure out a place for this guy on this team or we stand to lose him. It almost seems like they drafted him hoping that he'd fit in somewhere, but he doesn't.

So was Jay Fiedler, Josh McCown, Cleo Lemon, John Beck, Daunte Culpepper, Ricky Williams (against Buffablow), Joey Harrington, Sage Rosenfels, and Marcus Vick (or Jon Mexico as he's affectionately known). How did those work out for us again?

I think Jimmy Johnson would have tried that like he did turning Keith Byars from a FB into a TE, but I don't think TS would do this. Teaching White to run backwards would be a test of patience he wouldn't want. He has real safeties that need his attention. It was a good guess but not a practical one. IMHO

My one real complaint about that is White has not been given a chance to succeed or fail at any role, 52 plays is nothing for a young Qb, and yet the shovels are out to bury the guy.

The same could be said of Henne in 08.

Real point being, the past does not control the future, each player is unique, and if one notices, those Qb's came in under different regimes.

The past is a different country, they do things differently here.

That 52 plays was enough to expose the fact that he's not the player they thought he would be at the next level......that he's too small, too slow and too inaccurate to have been drafted before the 6th round.

Name a position that he belongs at? A position where he's actually better than the next guy?

He couldn't beat out anyone at any offensive skill position.... on a level playing field.

Some of us are ready to bury him because he's a waste of a roster spot and we have some good young talent that will likely be lost because him. Hanging on to a thread of hope will only compound the fact that this was an AWFUL pick....... move on, forward.

The Miami Dolphin website only has Pat White listed as 6' - 190 lbs, you really can't do a ton in the NFL with that build other than be a WR or QB on the offensive side of the ball. If the team keeps all of their current QB's and the WR's improve where do we put Pat White?? If he can't play, we can't trade him and he's just on the roster doing nothing could we see him reduced to the practice squad?

Actually, that WC is not a good fit for him at this time. First, the concept was that his ability as a QB would allow passing out of the position that RB plays in the WC. That's all well and good, but the fact is he is not a very good inside runner at this level and to be effective as the WCxQB, you have to have the threat to run most times. The formation is a run first formation. His lack of toughness as a an inside runner has been surprising and disheartening, I'm sure for the troika. If that is what he was drafted for (to be that WCxQB). If a runner can show teams that he can bust thru the middle of the formation, find that crack and due to it's uniqueness get past the initial defenders, with his quickness (although he's not a burner), he could be very effective (as RB is now). However, with his ability to pass the ball, suddenly the defense has a whole other concern even tho it's likely only a one man route... None of that has materialized because he hasn't shown the inside run ability. He also has been inaccurate in his passing, although I don't believe he showed that very often last year either.

The concept of him being a RB or WR or returner or whatever besides a QB is from us and the media. He also didn't show much as a QB last season although again he didn't really get the chances either. His frame is big enough to do something at this level. His ability to add some weight and become a little tougher will go a long way in determining if he makes some contribution this coming year.

There is no secret that I don't/didn't like the pick and that I feel he's going to waste a spot on the final roster for someone else who may have as much going for him or at least some potential that he hasn't shown so far. Is one year too short a time to ask this of him ?? I don't think so. A guy drafted for a specific role as high as he was drafted should have been able to produce. He wasn't being asked to be the proset QB or a WR or a RB or returner...just one role that he failed in....

So, to answer your question, to me he's a spread offense QB from the college level who's game has not translated to this level. A lot like Akili Smith, David Klingler, Andre Ware and that ilk of QB. The only one of that ilk that has been drafted and shown some sense of NFL ability has been Vick. Despite his issues off the field, he was relatively successful, but moreso as a runner and not as a QB. His passing ability and ability to read Ds is still his Achilles Heel as an NFL QB. His speed and vision certainly are not.

So, he's not a QB. He's not a WR (not fast enough). He's not a RB (not quick or tough enough). He's not a returner. He hasn't shown enough progress to be an effective WCxQB. Adding the weight and strength may very well aid him in reaching that goal, but we have to wait and see once the pads come on to make any kind of analysis. The problem is that due to his lofty draft status, and being the choice of the troika, he probably will stay with the team for another year. I just don't see that he's shown either any skillset or any potential skillset that translates well to this level....

You have to really wonder what they were thinking when they drafted this guy in the 2nd round in the first place. I remember when I heard the pick come in - I damn near died. When I think back of the talent that was out there that they could have drafted at that level instead of him I was (and still am) stupefied. White should have been a 5th rounder and would have been there after we got a star WR or another DB instead of him in the 2nd round. If we had, maybe we would have had a better record last year instead of a dead roster spot.

    http://www.databasefootball.com/draft/draftyear.htm?yr=2009&lg=NFL

It's obvious to me that drafting Pat White in that round was an impulse grab out of wishful thinking. IMHO this is arguably the biggest draft bust this regime has suffered. Never has a player generated so many hopes and speculation only to end in a vanilla joke. This is both a player, and a problem that we shouldn't have had and the coaching staff, like White himself, have both dropped the ball. Where is / was the much heralded "WILDPAT"? ............. No where. Now we have this guy on the roster as an unfunded liability with no use for him. The FO really took a mental holiday on this one.

I agree with everything except what I highlighted....

It wasn't us and the media that had all those scouts at his pro day pissed off and wondering why he chose not to run routes and instead present himself as a "QB only",

His stock wasn't as high as it was because he was this great QB prospect...... it was that high because ppl saw him as an all purpose threat.

Then what does our staff do? Drafts him number 44 overall and tries to teach him to be a pro set QB.

This situation isn't our (us and the media's) fault...... the responsibility for this lies with Pat White and mostly our FO's projection for him.

For me what makes this pick even worse is their intention of building an entire package around him. To me that is as irresponsible as the pick itself..

I think the whole debacle with PW all starts with our expectation. Is it really his fault that he is being attacked so much our fault? I think maybe we need to realize that he is young and needs work. Hey --- even Brett Favre rode the bench for a while before his stardom. I think if we lower our expectation he'll be just fine.

I known I am old but does anyone remember "wood-strock"?

(In 1982 QB David Woodley (who could scramble) and QB Don Strock (who was stiff legged and could throw) took the Dolphins to the Super Bowl alternating in at QB in various situations. Shula named it "Wood-Strock". The next year, 1983, we drafted Dan Marino)

They could be trying to mold White into this type of "Wood-Strock" QB. IE: Henne gets the ball down the field and White subs in on 3rd downs and in the red zone. It would be almost impossible for a defense to stop this. The contrasting styles at QB constantly would have them off balance, now combine that with the wildcat and see what you get.

Yes, or so they think, but that works against them too. Many times the defense moved up to expect a ground scramble only to have David Woodely throw over their heads. "Wood-Strock" was the ultimate deception, and the possibilities are endless.
