The iPad is nothing but a large iTouch??

Well, you could say that about the iPhone too. What I've heard from people who have one is that it's pretty nice and not that similar to an iTouch.

That's really where the software and the larger screen come into play. The internal parts however are nothing more than iTouch/iPhone parts. Ingenious or sneaky? I guess that's for the consumer to decide.

Like most memes, this one just refuses to die despite not really being related to reality. The iPad's internal hardware is different from an iPod Touch's. The A4 CPU should underline this.

Right, it's not like the Wii just being a gamecube that does motion sensing. :shifty:

So it's the same with a little better processing power?

The two run a similar (but not identical) OS and are touch-based. Beyond that, not the same internally or externally.

The hardware and software between the two are starkingly different. I played with one for 30 minutes...thoroughly disappointed. The experience didn't leave me wanting to buy one. The keyboard wasn't functional. The device is too wide for an iPhone-style keyboard. There's no way to really improve the keyboard, so one is forced to lay the device flat in order to type or you resort to two-finger typing. The email app isn't all that good and Safari couldn't render gmail properly, just like the iPhone. It's a very different experience from using iPhone/iTouch but I'm left wondering if that's a bad thing. Like personally I like my iPhone infinitely more than I would an iPad.

What it's good at is loading pics, watching movies, reading, anything that all you need to do is look at the screen or use a few gestures. After that, no thanks.

So, IMO it's less functional than my iPhone right now but it has a greater ceiling for growth. I'd want one if I was going on a long plane ride or went to the beach; it's great for recreational (v) practical stuff.

That it doesnt have a USB input kills it for me. I want a device that is a reader but I need it to be as close to a laptop as possible .....excluding the graphic capabilities which I dont need.

What USB functionality do you need? IIRC, there are some adapters in the works for the 30 pin port, card readers and the like.

But remember, the iPad is a secondary or tertiary device meant to exist at the end of a tether: it consumes content first and foremost. It's not really meant to replace a notebook, at least not in its current iteration. It's Apple's attack on the netbook.

If you want a tablet with the functionality of a notebook, maybe the HP Slate is more your thing... though a tablet running a full desktop OS probably isn't going to be the most user-friendly (or battery-friendly!) thing on the planet.

It's a big *** iPhone that doesn't call or text.

No thanks, once iPhone OS 4.0 comes out all of the iPad's features will be irrelevant. Don't see the need or even want aside from eye candy, especially for those with an iPhone and/or iPod Touch + Macbook Pro.

There's really not that much difference between a Pinto & Mustang. 4 wheels, engine, seats, steering wheel. Really the only difference is some power and trim features.

i have an iphone + Macbook Pro. I wanted an iPad REEEEAAAALLY bad until I played with it at Best Buy. I still think it's a nifty gadget that will sell well (has sold well I guess it's past tense now). But not for me at the moment.

I might take a look at the HP Slate though whenever it comes out.

thats what i figured id use it as...

right now i have a laptop that stays at the table next to my couch... and when we're just watching tv or doing something like that and want to look something up the laptop is there...

but an ipad on the coffee table might be even more convenient than having the laptop... but i want to wait a few months for apple to get any kinks out...
