I'm here bored at work and starting thinking about the draft. I came up with a couple strange thoughts and wanted to know if other Phins fans would be happy with these moves. 1. Trade down in the 1st round and pick up an extra 2nd rounder 2. Trade Phillip Merling and Ted Ginn Jr. for a 3rd and 5th round pick 3. Trade Camarillo for a 5th round pick. Draft: 1. Demaryius Thomas (trade down from #12) 2a. Corey Wooton 2b. Linval Josephs (trade down from #12) 3a. Jimmy Graham (trade from Merling and Ginn) 3b. Austen Lane 4. George Selvie 5a. Akwasa Owusu-Ansah (trade from Merling and Ginn) 5b. Brandon Lang (trade from Camarillo) 6a. A.J. Edds 6b. Terrell Hudgins 6c. O'Brien Schofield 7a. Cameron Sheffield 7b. Nathan Overbay This was just something I came up with off the top of my head so I am not sure if there are a few guys who's draft position is slightly off. However, I think we solidify our defense with this drat and also add some good players on offense and in special teams as well. What would you change if you had these picks.
Why don't you think we trade Merling or Ginn. I think the FO has been trying to find a replacement for Ginn for a while now by signing triston davis, kory sheets (for the return game) and Grice-Mullen which would be somewhat of a clone of Bess but a bit faster. As for Merling he is a rotational player at this point behind Starks and Langford. I like Merling but packaging him with Ginn for a couple picks wouldn't hurt us too much.
Ginn can still play a decent WR and he stretches the field. He also is was guraded by most teams #1 cb. He is also valuable in return game. We need better WR's not give them away for unproven rookie. Merling shows flashes and adds good depth. No reason to trade either.
I don't disagree that I am reading to much into those signings, but it is just a hunch of mine. It simply felt as though the FO was dissappointed with Ginn throughout the year. The void left by Ginn will be filled by Demaryius Thomas, Terrell Hudgins, and Jimmy Graham. Not to mention that Akwasa Owusu-Ansah is a very capable return man who doesn't shy away from contact. As for Merling, I am not saying that he is not a good player or that he won't become a good player. I actually like Merling and think he has great potential which he has in fact flashed at certain point during the season. However, I don't think losing him will hurt us very much while it will give us the oppurtunity to add picks in a talent heavy draft.
