http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/tv/2010/02/wqam-loses-dolphins-rights-doesnt-take-it-well.html Clear Channel has 610 WIOD (the Dolphins home prior to WQAM) and 940 WINZ, where the Heat Play. I would think the more likely destination is 940, "The Sports Animal". We have a nearly identical station here in Tampa (620) that also goes by "The Sports Animal". They are the flagship for the Bucs (shared), Lightning, Rays and Storm (Arena League). It will be interesting to see what would happen with the broadcast booth. Jimmy Cefalo does a show on WIOD, which as mentioned is Clear Channel. Jim Mandich supposedly was going stop doing his show on WQAM after this year anyway. Assuming he's ok, I would imagine he could be back too. Joe Rose has a show on WQAM, and I can't imagine they'd want him to work at a rival.
Indeed. Here is some info from Mike Berardino. I think it would be a massive mistake to willfully remove Mandich from the equation. He is Mr. Dolphins Radio. His voice is synonymous with the team. He is beloved by this fan base. That said, as we know the Dolphins have approval on that. If they don't want somebody, they ain't gonna be in there. So Clear Channel isn't going to place anybody there they don't want. I think that 'lower AM station' would be 940. Many places simulcast on AM and FM.
940 sucks too. They have the Heat games however maintaining the same broadcasters as when Heat games were on 610. But Im still worried, no Mad Dog and Big Dog is going to suck, just like when they got rid of Bill Zimpler in favor of Howard David.
Just on the ad revenue vs the cost of the broadcast rights contract, I'd certainly wager that the Dolphins coverage format basically made WQAM their profits this past yr. The Sun Sentennal media blogger mentioned that WQAM station manager Joe Bell "lost" Neil Rogers and Goldberg, but Rogers was making over a million dollars for his show (or so I've heard) so in the end Bell has had a push of a year financially.
Who is the play by play guy on the Dolphins radio team? Cefalo? I think he's brutal personally. I only hear them when they use their voices for highlights but I don't like him.
Ummm, don't you guys know about mediphin? Justin.tv/mediphin4, has all the games online. No downloads or crap like that, just a live stream. Sometime you have it to go to mediphin 5 or 6 etc. because of those damn copyrights, but other than that he is pretty reliable.
They paid Neil Rogers to leave. (The buyout was over a Million) 790 when they had the Dolphins would regularly take a bath on their games.
Not by this fan. Mandich is stale. He offers no insight of events on the field, and his over-enunciation of every syllable is grating. Cefalo, Mandich, and Rose all need to go. They do okay as individual radio personalities on their shows, and Rose is the best of the three in that regard. But collectively they form one of the worst radio teams I've ever heard. Say what you want about the Marlins and Panthers, but their radio guys know what they're doing. They're fun to listen to. I don't care about hockey but could listen to the Panthers team all night. The Three Stooges just make me want to turn my radio off. As for whatever station the Dolphins move to, I only hope they're available on via streaming radio app like iheartradio. Whenever I'm in the car listening to a game, I'll stream it over my iPhone rather than tune in to the radio. Better sound quality. Limited station choice, though.
Removed the ongoing expense though, El Sid has said he is #4 in the last Arbitron ratings and I'd suspect he will have moved up a bit by now. TBH, I never listen to 790 online, is that the one with Troy Stradford hosting a show?
Broadcasts are made better when they have an excellent play by play guy, and a color comentator. Mandich is the perfect fit to add color comments. What he needs is someone who does play by play effortlessly. I hated Howard David just because he was a NY broadcaster but he knew his stuff when it came to play by play. They need another Zympher or David type... Cefalo and Rose have made the broadcasts terrible, not Mandich. IMO
Highly disagree. Each person in that booth makes the other two worse. Mandich is not above the fray on this one. If Cefalo sounds like he's asleep, Mandich sounds like he's mailing it in.
We know all about it. But what does it have to do with the radio? A lot of us mute the TV and listen to the games on radio regardless.
Barry Jackson has the straight dope I'm not in the area anymore, but TT was telling me the WINZ feed can be pretty weak. Also, Joe Bell says WQAM would allow Mandich and Rose to do the games on Clear Channel. http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/02/28/1504806/dolphins-to-move-games-to-winz.html
I used to. But these days I have Tivo. I can press pause for a few seconds to sync them up. Admittedly I have so much going on during games that I don't stream the audio very often.
Wow, I really enjoyed Bokamper's show from 7-8 but tbh I wasn't to wild abut stuff like HS football tonight on that show. I mean what would I care about Miami Area HS football?
lol agreed. High School Football talk should be saved for the weekend when no one listens to talk radio.
Thought about this a bit and there is something we all may be missing: -The Dolphins Organization may have not liked the access QAM had to the athletes as well as offering them radio shows where Ronnie, Ricky, Channing all talked out of school about the inner workings of the Dolphins 09 season. -the Joey Porter flap started on Rome is Burning, but the gasoline was poured on the fire during SB week on Channing Crowder's show. -Look at the deal the Dolphins took to move the broadcasts, they are receiving no licensing fees only whatever they can make selling ads, basically the Dolphins Inc. are giving away the broadcasts for free.
I like the idea of it being simulcast on 105.9 I live by powerlines and it'd be nice to not have to worry about the signal fading in and out.
Sure, however how much WQAM traffic was generated by covering the Dolphins Games? I can say that if it weren't for the games I'd never have tuned into QAM to begin with.
I am thrilled Big 105.9 will be broadcasting Dolphins games. My favorite station, the best morning show in Miami, and now Dolphins games. I don't think I will be changing the station ever again.
Isn't that where Paul and Young Ron went? I used to love those guys on Zeta when I lived around there.
Anyone want to continue the argument that we shouldn't be appalled at the greed induced increasing revenue demands players and owners milk from professional sports? Anyone that regularly argues that the increases in player pay and owner income is justified just isn't paying attention IMO. You've got regular fans that can't go to games. Super Bowls filled with corp. sponsors not regular fans. Media outlets dropping coverage because the financial demands of the leagues dwarfs the ability of the media outlet to profit from having the rights. The pricing model of professional sports is not based on demand. It's going way beyond that. It's hard to stay a fan seeing all this. As far as who is going to be broadcasting games, I'm just glad it didn't go back to 790.
Last nail in WQAM's coffin for me.. They cancelled Dolphins Tonight in favor of 3 hours of Kevin Rogers...I'd rather insert an ice pick through my calf than listen to that cat for 3 hrs.
It's always been a business. It became big business. Now it's titanic business. You wonder how any of this is sustainable. From the regular fan side, anyway. Right now times are tough. And most teams have kept prices flat the past couple of seasons. But bad economy or not, they'll eventually move. The price of parking certainly has (for non-season ticket holders, anyway). The price of stadium food will rise like it always does. Depending on economics and what our politicians do, the cost of production could rise significantly, and those costs will be passed on to us. Your point about butts in the seats is valid. Only a select few cities are immune. But they above all are helping drive the corporate mentality, with their billion dollar stadiums and PSL model, thereby driving the regular fan out. Regardless, the game has never been more popular. The money and ratings continue to pour in. So what incentive do they have to slow down? The NFL thrives off those multi-billion dollar TV contracts. And with the way the league is trending, I think it'll continue to be that way. With more and more people staying home rather than going to the games, owners would be wise to build smaller stadiums (save for the largest markets), and perhaps simply embrace the corporate crowd/TV model. Modern technology has made the home a great place to watch a game. The NFL requires all the games be broadcast in Hi Def, sending down the best camera angles, replays, in-game innovations, etc. to our big HD televisions. It's a beautiful thing. I actually give Stephen Ross credit for trying to create an atmosphere at the games. Team management knows they're fighting an uphill battle as fans have less and less incentive to attend the games live. What you worry about (as a fan under my scenario) is that your stadium is too big. That you can't just build a stadium. That the local affiliate or corporate deep pocket won't want to buy the remaining unsold tickets because there are too many.....and they'll start blacking out games.
Yep Paul and Young Ron are on Big 105.9 now, its sucks that Zeta got shot to hell, 93 Rock sucks balls.
unless you like listening to the same songs cycled over and over. 1059 reminds me of WSHE from back in the day
Yeah 105.9 is amazing. They never play the same songs over and over again (Y-100 is by far the worse at this). They play awesome songs, e.g. lots of Led Zeppelin. They like to play B tracks and Live songs as well. They even added some Metallica, GnR, Soundgarden, etc. I don't think any other station can compare. They really care for the music they put on. They also play the longer songs IN THEIR ENTIRETY. (Unlike the Keys' rock station SUN 103.1, who butcher songs like November Rain in order to fit some type of time slot).
Problem is, I liked listening online to the Dolphins shows but I won't know when those shows start or what station they will be on as I don't listen to either one right now.
