Did not see a post on this. May miss opener because of hip injury again Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hopefully not. Apparently he's day to day, but will sit out last two preseason games. Then we'll see from that point. Need him against Seattle's defense, of course.
Based on the snap for snap view I took of the Cowboys game I would say that Kraig Urbik should be the center until Mike Pouncey gets back. There was a completely different level of anchor and power to his game compared with Anthony Steen, who always teetered on the edge of losing his leverage completely and being bowled over. If Steen made an effective block during the game, it was generally a trap of some sort where he could use the opponent's momentum against him. Urbik could actually stand his ground, maintain pocket space for his quarterback, and get a little movement in straight ahead blocking. Steen also had that bad shotgun snap which led to Doughty's fumble.
Completely agree. Urbik is a very solid backup. We will be fine until Pouncey comes back. Steen definitely gets pushed around some but as you pointed out he has a bit of guile in using angles to his advanatge. Not the worst but doubt he makes the final cut
I really wish the fins hadnt signed him to that new contract. He has no business making big money. Hes been overrated since pretty much day 1. He is rarely healthy, he plays a position with minimal impact compared to his salary and hes just not a difference maker. Hes a solid player and a guy worth having for 3-4 million a yr when healthy but that contract he got couldve been much better used on an impact player who actually stays on the field, is a playmaker and isnt a liability to do something stupid off the field.
I would have traded Pouncey a long time ago. What a waste of salary cap. I predict that our OL will be better without him. Urbick for a couple years along with a good draft pick to develop and we would be better off.
I agree. Even when playing Im not sure how healthy he had been. Maybe one of those hidden reasons our line has stuggled Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If the team were really rebuilding I think Pouncey would be under serious review because he doesn't add the kind of value to the team that you'd want to see considering the financial investment. Miami has been very active over the last half-decade in throwing high draft picks and big contracts at the O-line. That's not smart football and these panic moves have generally not worked out. To put things in perspective, Miami has used high picks on Pouncey, Martin, James and Tunsil while handing out several large contracts in both the Sparano and Philbin eras. It appears that the Tannenbaum era won't be any different which means that an over-allocation of resources along the O-line will likely result in the creation of holes elsewhere on the roster. The drafting of James at RT for example can be directly tied to the loss of Martin. Miami spent 2 high picks to fill the same position! The drafting of Tunsil this year meant not drafting CB, MLB or DE which would've really helped in the rebuilding of this defense! I would dare say the team desperately needed one of those given the loss of Vernon and Shelby. The team picked Pouncey because it had a huge need on the interior of the line. He was not an ideal fit at the time but he was clearly the most talented prospect. It was a move that screamed "we are forced to do this." The big contract extension was the team doubling down on Pouncey to make sure the interior of the line (which was still a huge issue at that point) had at least a little something to show for it. So it's pretty clear that the team forced itself to over-invest at the position 2 times because of a lack of talent. Boy has this past half-decade been frustrating to watch. Even the moves that might have been considered productive has had their consequences. Anyone know exactly what the details of Pouncey's current deal are? I'd be interested to know if there's any sense in looking for alternative options in the near future.
I agree with your overall point completely with the exception of the Tunsil pick. You gotta make that pick. He's a top 3 talent in the draft at a position of need. He will be our LT next season and likely this season when/if Albert gets hurt. The Fins badly needed a backup plan for Albert and James and let's be honest neither Albert or James have been all that impressive. Not to mention he's a huge upgrade over any G we have for this season if by chance Albert and James do stay healthy. Tunsil was a rare gift on draft day for the Dolphins. My favorite pick since Vontae Davis fell to us before we ignorantly traded him for a 2nd round pick. Only the Fins draft the top cb in a draft, develop him and then trade him for a 2nd lol.
I was just thinking this watching the game FRI... I wonder if he will play better with more help around him, because the last couple of years I have not been too impressed with how he has performed. Does he not call out blitzers and schemes on the offensive line? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Is this a shot at Pouncey? What have I missed that he's done off the field that could be considered a liability?
I believe he was possibly-involved and certainly happy to stand by and watch the Martin-Incognito fiasco. That didn't escape anyone's attention. That's a huge knock against whatever "leadership" he had/has. He also supported Aaron Hernandez...maybe it was just an ex teammate showing love but in hindsight that was regrettable, lol.
Supporting murderer Aaron Hernandez was certainly embarassing. He and his brother were also involved in a fight at a resturant or club a few years ago. He strikes me as a guy who's on the periphery of the danger zone with relation to getting arrested and/or suspended.
He strikes me as more of the guy who eggs on his friends to do something then stands back when **** hits the fan
I didn't come away from that saga thinking positively about Jonathan Martin and I didn't come away disliking Richie Incognito all that much either. I'll give you that. But I don't like the way that Incognito (and the others) allowed that situation to slide into the realms it did. That shows a lack of control. Things like that have a way of snowballing and ultimately no one wants to admit any blame when they ultimately blow up. I expect it from kids but these are grown men and in Pouncey's case he's supposed to be the leader of that group. His image and his authority took a hit there for sure.
