Look at these drafts after he was selected . http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/mia/draft.htm This is a very sad showing of drafting.
More like THE reason. So many of those drafts from the rest of the 80s were just total washouts. The team started to do better around 89, and surprise, the team started to make the playoffs again.
This is why I had started calling for Shula to be fired in the early 90's, he had lost it, he just was not in touch with the modern game.
I think that he was fine as a coach, but his GM skills weren't there any more. Its funny how as a kid, I saw Shula as being an old man in the 90s before he retired, but he was only in his early 60s, or about the same age that Bill Belichick and Nick Saban are today.

Believe me I'm well versed in just how badly we failed Marino in not being able to build a team around him. Shula never should have been given GM duties. He was a hell of a coach but like many coaches had no business buying the groceries. From time to time I still question if our poor showings since Marino has retired has to do with some curse the organization received for wasting a HOF QB's career. How do you do that? That's tough to pull off and we did it.
