After just one voluntary practice session in his new job, Miami Dolphins rookie head coach Adam Gase already is in Ryan Tannehill’s head.

That goes for Miami’s other quarterbacks, too, because Gase busied himself during Tuesday’s workout sending plays into their helmet speakers via a walkie-talkie.

“I hope the quarterbacks are on the other end,” Gase said with a laugh when asked where his words were going.

“We like to start that game-type mentality for the quarterbacks, getting used to hearing my voice. It’s just the way I call plays and the way they can hear it and kind of understand that I probably talk too much. I’ll give them tips and things of what to look for.”

At one point or another Gase seemed to be in everybody’s ear during the 90 minutes the team spent on the field

Early in the session he stood alongside Dan Marino, the Dolphins legend turned special advisor to team president Tom Garfinkel. Then Gase jogged off to all four corners of both practice fields, stopping to compare notes with assistants, pulling wide receiver Jarvis Landry aside for a private thought, calling out to Tannehill that he should have gone somewhere else with a particular pass during an 11-on-11 drill.

It’s a play hard, play fast, enjoy-the-ride type of tone,” cornerback Tony Lippett said. “He’s a loose guy. He walks around here, he’s not uptight. He talks junk to the players. That kind of helps you play better.”

On a side note: I've said it before, but man do I hope Lippett becomes a play maker.

He’s talking about carving up the Miami defense there, folks.

“It was fun getting out there,” Gase said. “It feels like it’s been forever.”

The practice field, you see, is Gase’s canvas. It is where many of his ideas are born. It is where he can teach and experiment and evaluate and make decisions that will help define him as a first-year head coach.

Granted, much of that won’t happen until the hottest days of summer. What these three days in late April are for is building a foundation, establishing a mindset and creating the type of environment that is mandatory for success. He’s not going to wage an all-out attack on the playbook just yet, instead introducing it in bits and pieces.

“I try to see where my place is,” he says. “I want to observe as much as I can, learn as much as I can. I went over and checked out the offensive and defensive lines. Didn’t get to do that much when I was an offensive coordinator.”
