The loss of the LST's nearly derailed the D-Day invasion plans. The numbers were so marginal regarding the ability to carry sufficient tons of resupply that thought was given to a postponement. When the moon/tides/etc. could not be reconciled and replacements were rushed in, the plans went forward.

Keep in mind the D-day invasion was happening at the same time as the invasion of the Mariannas in the Central Pacific and the fall of Rome in Italy. What an incredible industrial giant was the US in those days.
